    Long range rifles?

I didn't read the entire thread but has anyone mentioned a 6.5x284? 140 grain bullet at 2950 outperforms a 300 winchester with a 180 past 400 yards. another interesting round is the 6.5 Grendel. Look at it compared to the venerable ole .308.....

    Bullet Question

LArk, You are like my wife. I have to tell her multiple times when she is right too..... jeesh I shoot 140's with a 1in 8 outa the 6.5x284 Cooper. It seems to be one of those guns that shoots everything well, just some things GREAT. So I have been fortunate in not having to try to figure out the little things.

    Bullet Question

OK Lark, you are getting to sound like my wife.... YES! I WAS WRONG! I said that about four posts back. You cannot use a quote after I admit I was bad. Poor manners. Of course I probably should apologize for referring to your .270 as middle aged and overweight.....

    Bullet Question

Hence my statement "a 1in12 {slower twist}will stabilize a 125 {short bullet in .308} better than a 1in 10{faster twist}" Stop trying to confuse me, its too easily done. THe only thing that would make the 270 best is if it lost about .006 around its middle. But I understand it is a middle-aged round and carries a little too much girth. Take one a whip it into shape and you get a .264. Now you have something.......

    Bullet Question

Ok, my bad I said that all wrong. What I started with is right then I got off and said it backwards. My point is a 1in12 will stabilize a 125 better than a 1in10. Thank you for keeping me honest and I hate it when you are right. (you too Tony)
  8. doc, i actually followed up on the same issue. As near as I could tell it is all copasetic. Undersubscribed by residents in those units.

    Bullet Question

Lark, To shoot a 125 in an '06 I would probably go to a 1in12" twist. Most of them are going to be 1in10" as a standard. Lighter bullets need to spin more; longer, heavier bullets stabilize better and need less spin.

    Failsafe bullets

I am looking for some 180 grain 30 caliber failsafe bullets. If anyone has access to any please let me know. I did not buy enough when they were discontinued. I was hoping Winchester would release the replacement and that they would shoot as well but I haven't seen them out yet. I heard alot of complaints that they did not open up enough but I have had great success and amazing accuracy.

    Bullet Question

I shot some of the 130 Lost River bullets and never got where I wanted to be with accuracy. I think when you drop out of the 150 range you might want to speed up the twist of the barrel. I had a buddy shoot a Couse with a Berger VLD (308 with 168's) and he said the deer dies the right way but the bullet did not expand at all. He recovered it from the off side of a quartering shot. I like the way they shoot but am sticking with hunting bullets for hunting....

Twelve Days of Christmas: 34A Coues Hunt

RR, Crying shame, sorry to hear what happened. Based on the pics I would say it was a success overall. Time in the hills is good. I must say you are much braver than I. The stock on your rifle looks great from a small pic. I would roach that on a coues hunt in about two minutes. I used to have pretty guns before I started couzin...... HoC

    Our Director gets busted

The new law says that a public land license is not valid on private land without written permission. So.... he was hunting without a license. I don't agree with his management, but I think it was an honest mistake. Problem is, there is no intent required. He will get a fine just like any of us would.

how many do you work up?

Casey, I find the books are very conservative and I will sometimes get WAY over the max load, with little or no pressure. My 6.5 is shooting less than a half inch and I get 200 fps more than the book shows. I have found powders that are not in the "recommended" category that actually give me better performance with this method. I do recommend starting below listed pressures tho....

how many do you work up?

for a hunting load I like to pick a bullet I want to try then I load 5 to 7 rounds, one grn increments until I start showing pressure. Back off one grain and write it down. Repeat with four or five different powders. Once I have max on all I load five rounds of each. Pick the best group and start messing with seating. I almost always have one load(or more) that is under an inch and on my good rifles I have them down to .5-.75. I can't seem to shoot the big magnums to their potential so one inch groups work for me. Guess I am getting soft in my old age. Targets are awhole nuther thing. Bracketing works really well.....

    Factory or Handloaded Ammo?

Coues rifles like handloads. I used a 6.5x284 for antelope, bear and coues this year. 140 SST, h4831, cci br2, lapua brass 3100 fps. Cooper rifle (incredible factory gun). 490 yds on the coues, 200+/- on the goat, 258 on the bear. Awesome on goat and deer, bullet failed miserably on the bear. I will not hunt bears with anything that does not have at least a 30 caliber bullet from now on. Looking for a wounded bear in oak thickets at 1:30 AM is NOT my idea of a big time (19 incher). Placement was right, bullet just fragged on impact. Working up loads for .338 win and .300 wby for february oryx. 210 nosler partitions in the 338, gonna try mrx in the wby. Any suggestions here would be appreciated. Was using the 300 with 165 sciroccos for deer but my partner calls them nuclear warheads because of the damage. I want something a little tougher for oryx. I hate to admit this, but I have stopped handloading my '06's. I get fantastic accuracy out of the Hornady light magnums. My wifemate shoots a tikka 300wsm and the winchester factory accubond loads shoot into an inch pretty regularly.

    cat

Bill seems to have established the Jags are outa the state. Extrapolating that info I would say that any attempts at reintroduction would put the cats in a Non-Resident status. Therefore, they are limited to 10% and must have max points to eat during December. No eating at all above the river, although G&F would tell them they can try. Also, they will have to buy their license prior to eating. If they come out of Mexico it would put them into Illegal immigrant status. I have no problem with this as long as their offspring are not allowed on the welfare system.

    To Bed Or Not

I was discussing taking weight off my rifle with an old gunsmith one day. He said " you would be much better off to take ten pounds off your butt than one pound off the rifle". wow, that hurt; the truth sometimes does....

    Caliber preference

Once again I see that the Rabbit is the Master. Listen grasshoppers and learn. 260 caliber is the ultimate for medium to long range small to medium animals.......... 260 remington is nice; 6.5X284 is really nice; 140 grain bullet with a BC over .600 going 3000 fps. Compare this load to a 180 .30 cal going 3000 at 600 yards - interesting stuff. don't have one of the cool 6.5 cats yet so I have something to do yet.

Muley hunt NM unit 10 10/20/07

let me know what you find. I haven't been able to draw that tag for years. Finally gave up. If you get bad weather there are better spots for the late hunt.

    Long Range Animal Recovery

I like to hang a long piece of flagging from the shot location. Then I shoot an azmuth (sp?) with the compass. I also shoot the range with my laser. I go the the other side and shoot a reverse azmuth on the compass until I get in line, then I use the laser to find the exact spot. Works great, at least so far....

Hunt the back side of McKenzie ridge toward Barometer Mountain. Be careful of the private land. Some of the landowners there have no sense of humor. GL
