His cutters did seem short but the tops of the mass buck didn't look too big to me. Maybe because he's so big on the bottom?

There is a Safeway on the east side that has a gas station too. Maybe you can use your rewards points to help on fuel. There is also a SAMs Club that usually has the best price on diesel.

This buck seems to have good mass, length, and looks good to me. The pictures aren't as good thou.

Here is a buck that stood out to me because of the width at his eye.

It really depends on who is hunting and where you're hunting. Sometimes some of the areas get hit pretty hard. It's a big area and you can always hike away from other people thou.

It can be a very tough hunt. They are there but it's nothing like the southern AZ whitetail hunting. Very limited road access (at least for those that follow the rules) which is very frustrating and thick country. They are there if you know how to hunt them thou. Like said by last poster....The weather can be a huge factor in either hunt too (October or December).
