UPDATE- Got a good one....Looking for pointers for my Uncle's CHAMP elk hunt
pyle762 posted a topic in Elk Hunting
Update- We did wind up on the Bo. As we were heading in to a spot to glass we spotted a group of nice bulls from the truck. Even though he had a CHAMP permit and could have shot from the truck, he got out and put a sneak on them. A cow mew stopped them and he got the big one in the group. He's a nice 5x6 that was pretty busted up from fighting over the ladies. My uncle was happy as could be and never thought he would get a bull close to this big and figured going into the hunt his any elk tag would probably be wrapped around a cow leg. NOT ASKING FOR SPOTS My uncle drew the any elk CHAMP tag in Unit 10. It is his first elk tag ever. It starts the second week of Nov. He is fairly old and has some heart issues. He can get out and move around and do some hiking but is pretty limited and can't do anything too strenuous. I will be taking him to help out and pack out the elk. I have very limited experience in 10. I guess I am just looking for some pointers for him to help him be successful. Is the Boquillas fees worth it? We can road hunt since he has the CHAMP permit but I have never really been successful doing that, but it that probably the best chance at getting an elk? I am thinking a combination of road hunting, glassing from some easily accessible spots and sitting water mid-day. Thanks for any advice.- 18 replies

Yes it is...only 50 tags plus the 15 CHAMP tags so shouldn't be too crowded -

I've never hunted on the Bo. Is it worth spending the cash to do it? -
Man this drought is tough on the animals. Found this girl stuck in a slick rock slot canyon. This time it was the other way around; tying to save them instead of shooting them. https://youtu.be/mUadQxvN7uQ

This! It is the worst I have ever seen it. That canyon we were in normal flows year round and at one time Game and Fish stocked it with Gila trout. Now it is just mud puddles. Pray for rain.

Ya, that crossed my mind. I figured I would snap some pics of everything just in case because I can't see a squirrel cop rappelling in there and crawling down a mud hole to give his blessing.

Thanks! Not really into caving too much. I was up there doing some canyoneering and the cave was a side trip after I stumbled onto it. I find cool stuff while canyoning like elk heads but that are always beat up because of the flash floods so not worth hauling out. As far as the not cool stuff I find in canyons it is usually a dead rotten animal that came in for a drink and couldn't climb out of the pool...dead critter stew that you have to swim through. Anything from coatis to bears. One popular Sedona canyon had 3 dead bears floating in it at one time and you had to swim through the pothole they were in 😖

This is the main room to the cave. You can see the light coming in at the entrance. Someone put a log there to use as a ladder to access it. The deer were a further back in the cave.

They would have fallen. It is about 30 feet down and it is sheer rock all the way around. I doubt a cat would be able to climb out, and the one that was decomposed was still pretty much whole and not eaten on.

The bigger one was mostly decomposed and didn't smell anymore so it had been a while. The smaller one was pretty much just bones.

Man fox are about the dumbest critter to respond to a call. Whoever came up with the saying "sly as a fox" never called one in. I bet I know what sound you were using............😉 -
Speaking of portals...G&F said that you would be able to add kids to your account with the new system, but I haven't found where you can do that. Am I missing something or is that not available?
