Three years in a row of eating tag soup. Finally got this buck on opening day. Glassed him up bedded early afternoon but the sun was so bad I had no shot until the sun dropped behind the hill. Sitting there for 2 hours hoping he wouldn't move was nail biting, somehow he never moved an inch. Finally the light got better and I was able to drop him with the first shot right through heart at 501 yards. First time I have seen an animal drop instantly in the scope. What a rush! First hunt in the Kaibab, man is it beautiful up there.

what to do when an angry bear approaches?
Rando replied to portas.d.ace's topic in Black Bear or Grizzly Bear hunts
I have had two run ins with bears with cubs while bow hunting them in Ontario. Not being allowed to carry a pistol over there made it feel a little more sketchy. The only one that was really close was when I was walking back from sitting on a stand over some bait as it was getting dark. As I was walking on the road I came around a bend and saw a big ol black bear with two cubs following about 40 yards away and heading right at me. My initial reaction I threw my hands up over head and yelled "Hey Bear!!" and waved my hands. The Momma stood for what felt like forever but was probably a split second, growled at me, then dove into the woods with her cubs in tow. I stood there for second, this being one of my first encounters with bears, trying to decide if I should walk past where she dove into the thick Canadians woods in the dark to get back to my truck. Or if I should just go sit back in the stand until my buddies got worried and drove out there. Not wanting to be a wuss I chose to just walk forward to the truck and it may have been the most nervous I have ever been. The bear was heading to the bait I was sitting and we had trail camera pictures when we went back the next morning. She was a good sized 300+lb bear. I have been back bowhunting up there multiple times and love it. I think black bears are pretty harmless. There are lots of stories up there of people sitting all night in treestands because of a momma bear growling at them. -
My ducks from last season look awesome. really happy with Sven's work!

Glassing with a legend - DuWane Adams Glassing Class
Rando replied to CatfishKev's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
I did this glassing class with him last year. I learned a ton and it really helped me feel more comfortable behind my binos. Duwane is a class act and my buddy that went with me still keeps in touch with him. -
That's a heck of a year right there! Congrats

After contemplating what I did wrong on the last two time I went duck hunting and missed plenty of mallards and shovelers and the info I got from all of you I headed back out to the area I have been seeing ducks on tanks. I decided against sitting a tank the first hour and just went with the game plan of being quieter and trying to get glass on the tank first and making a game plan from there. Took the Can am out this time so I could move around the desert quicker than the truck. After hitting the first tank right around 740 I notice a truck parked over by my truck and trailer so cruised over there to see if someone was messing with my stuff. Turns out it was game and fish, kinda funny because when I drove up on them they had there Binos out and were glassing the tank I was just on. Ended up bsing with them for a little bit, turns out they had received calls over the last few weeks of someone messing with wildlife with aircraft or something. Anyways that pretty much killed the first hour of light so I was pretty bummed and feeling like I was not off to a good start. Jumped back in the can am and started sneaking up to tanks. On my way to the fourth or fifth tank I decided to swing by this little tank not far off the highway that I skipped last time. As I sneak up the large berm and poke my head over the tank I see about 10-12 canvasbacks and two other that look like shovelers of some type!!! I freeze and start panicking they are going to fly off and I am too far away I stare at them and nothing, they don't see me. So I grab my rangefinder and laser them up real quick and they are 62 yards away and I know I have to run atleast 12 yards in the wide open to even have a chance. I take a deep breath, look at my buddy, and start sneaking with my shotgun up. As a stroke of dumb luck they don't fly at all until I get about 40 yards then they take off. I hit 2 canvasbacks with one shot and the one dropped dead, the other flew down and my buddy finished it off, and missed the Shovelers with my second shot. Shot the other Coot or Scaups (not sure which they are to be honest) when I jumped them and then hid and they circled over top of me. What a blast of a good time! Thanks again for all the tips and strategies, they really helped save me probably years of frustration. And I got the first ducks that I can actually get stuffed much earlier than I imagined. I think tank hopping has mostly run its course for me. I am sure I will do it a few more times but starting next year I will be working on a place to hunt from a blind with decoys, getting ducks that are coming in just sounds like a good ole time. I haven't been this obsessed since I went on my first ever elk hunt years ago.

Third time's a charm!
Rando replied to Rando's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
Thanks guys it is definitely a sickness that I understand now. I had a feeling I wasn't Id'ing those ducks right. I shot the three ringnecks out of the same group that flew over me so that makes sense. -
Hey guys, I have been contemplating how I can get a few more ducks and was thinking of sitting a water tank that I have found has ducks on it the last 3 times I have snuck up on it. The tank is a large L shape and provides lots of cover so I have been unsuccessful at getting shot off when I jump them off the tank. I have came back to the tank later that day and scared off two nice mallards so I know they come back to this tank all day. My question is sitting a tank is this typically something that can produce results? Also, I have a set of decoys should I throw a couple in the tank if I sit it? Thanks for the previous help you guys definitely helped me contract duck fever!

Thanks guys I am going to try that technique this weekend

New to duck hunting; trying out some tank hopping
Rando posted a topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
So every year I try and get into duck hunting and every year it doesn't happen because I don't know where to go or anyone who duck hunts. So yesterday I said screw it and picked up a new browning shotgun and started doing some research on google maps for a place to jump stock tanks this weekend. And just try and build some experience this way. I have mapped out about 10 tanks in 24b that I was thinking of hitting. This isn't too far from my house so might be a start. Can anyone give me any advice on if this will be an area where I might see something or if I am wasting my time? I would gladly take any suggestions of a starting point and do some E scouting from there if someone is willing to point me in a better direction. -
New to duck hunting; trying out some tank hopping

Update on my duck hunting quest. I shot what I believe is a Scaup?? Would love someone to verify this because scaups seem to very in patterns. This is my second duck ever so I'm happy. I missed a lot of ducks and spooked even more. The foliage around tanks is frustrating. Also I learned a valuable lesson by getting shot in the face. My buddy was 120 yards to the southwest of me and shot a duck that was flying about 2 feet over the water. Some of the BB's skipped off the water, went way left and one of them hit me less than an inch from my eyeball. I feel pretty lucky just having a little bruise and will be wearing eye protection and will make sure we are all on the same sides of the tank from now on. Won't stop me from trying to figure out this duck hunting stuff tho! I will be back out this weekend!
