You should have a great hunt. -
"I got some comments from some people that a 45 cal is too light for elk, however, just like anything shot placement is the key". I thought it might be a little light also, but I wont be shooting at anything outside of 100 yds. Thanks for the replies, Rich.

I dont want to scare you away from the southern units, I will still hunt them in the future, just want you to be aware of what you might encounter down there. I had hunted unit 32 about 20 years ago for mulies and thought it would be nice to go back. Pre-hunt scouting was great, explored some new places and found a surprising amount of whitetail. I fell in love with this unit once again. Lots of options in this unit. Area has a wilderness area so a pack-in hunt would be productive. The unit is large and has a lot of different terrain to check out. We saw quite a few whitetail even when scouting lower elevations, so dont overlook them. I will probably be back in this unit again this year (unfinished business so to speak). There are trophies to be had in this unit. Its a great hunt. Unit 33 is a great unit, but not one I spend much time in, so I'll leave that to someone else. Good luck, Rich.

I have been hunting 36a, 36b and 34a for years, and they are all great units, but with all the trash out there from illegals it just taints the hunt for me. Last year I went to unit 32 (klondyke area) and really enjoyed myself, no matter how many washes I crossed, I never came across one backpack.

I have the rifle hunt and haven't got my pig yet. I know that area pretty good and will try to get out there sometime during the week. Maybe I'll find your swarovski's and my pig. If you decide to form a search party, I'd be more than happy to help also. Let me know. Rich.

Ethics of Finding a Trail Camera
TATAat27 replied to SilentButDeadly's topic in Photography of Coues Deer and Other Wildlife
We can argue about alot of different things that deal with hunting, but we shouldn't be arguing about wheter or not we should steal from each other. KGAINES I'm not much into stands or cameras, but I'm sure not going to touch someone else's property. I do have a problem with people thinking the "spot" is theirs because they have done so much "work" to the area, but unless I have put a lot of time into an area myself, I would probably go elsewhere. I want to be as far away from everyone else as possible, I enjoy the hunt a whole lot more that way. So leave people's things alone, hunt hard, enjoy this short life as much as you can, and if someone else beats you to "your spot", no matter how much time you put into it, give him the space that you yourself would want. Rich -
I have been hunting the 36's for almost 20 years and its just terrible what has happened down there, you really have get lucky not to see or run into illegals or illegal activity. Its terrible to see canyons that use to be filled with wildlife littered with trash. It seems that every unit south of tucson has a really bad problem not just 36a. I remember going hunting as a teenager and not a worry in the world about illegals. What a shame.

A friend of mine at work is looking to buy a rifle. He's looking for something from a .243 to a .270. This will be his first rifle and he would like to spend no more than $500.00. So if you have a rifle and are thinking about upgrading, downsizing, baby on the way, momma needs a new pair of shoes, please let me know. Thanks, Rich.

He would like a package deal, but would consider a rifle only purchase for that price depending on the rifle.

After reading about Casey's hunt I started remembering a bunch of dumb things I've done while hunting. here are a couple of examples: 1. I was hiking on the side of a hill when my cousin began shooting on the other side. No sooner than I looked up, here comes a beautiful buck over the hill and heading down right in front of me about 20yds or less. I pulled my rifle up and couldn't find him in the scope right away so I proceded to lower my rifle and shoot basically from the hip a la John Wayne, needless to say I missed. 2. I was hiking up a hill first thing in the a.m. and as I neared the top of the hill, two bucks easily over 100" ran up the opposite hill. I immediately sat down found them in my scope, the first shot was off its mark and since it had rained all night the night before I was unable to see just where it hit. I went into panic mode and started shooting at them aiming my rifle right in the middle of of both of them as they ran side by side up and over the hill. I guesstimate they were only about 150 yds away at the most. I guess thats hunting. If you dont get excited, you're doing something wrong.

Dilemma, how would you deal with this??
TATAat27 replied to fatfootdoc's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
Have a talk with your friend, go through the hunters safety course and see how serious he and the boy take it. If they dont take the critisism or the class seriously, ditch him! Rich
