    Who's shooting feathers?

Nah man, if I'd have done that with broadheads I would've started a whole new thread!! This was just getting my pins set: 60 is as far as I go on my sight unless I try some of that voodoo pin sh!t some guys are doing. I've put off everything over what I can shoot in my backyard until I got these arrows built. I may try singles with broadheads tomorrow and see what happens. But, I lost an arrow in the grass today like, literally LOST the dammed thing because of the shallow angle it hit. I don't want to do that again. I spent 45 min on my hands and knees scratching at the grass like a crack whore who just dropped her rock. Not cool when each one totals about 17 bucks...

First group at 60yds. Totally satisfied with how they're flying.

    Solo elk hunting

Last Nov was my very first elk hunt and I did it solo with a bow. Didn't fill the tag but learned a ton through observation, self criticism, and making more than few mistakes. I experienced the frustration of a late season hunt first hand and with my own decisions guiding, and sabotaging, my efforts. Had a very decent bull at 40yds but you can't shoot an arrow through oak brush and manzanita. The thrill of being that close, which also validated the decisions that put me there, were worth the entire hunt, empty tag and all. I was out there 9 days of the season and wouldn't have wanted it any other way (other than filling my tag by myself). Somehow I beat all the odds this year and drew the same hunt this Nov. Still a tough hunt, the late ones always are. But I'll be headed into the same unit again with the knowledge gained from last year and will almost certainly be doing it alone again. Not many of my buddies want to live out of a tent in rim country in Nov. Honestly, I can't even imagine heading back to a lodge/hotel/rental house every night. To me that seems to unnecessarily complicate the process. I'll pack it out however I can, as long as it takes. It'll be tougher than it needs to be but who cares? That's part of the whole experience for me. I'm not some loner who's super anti-social but being away from people is why I put a pack on. I'm headed into the CO high country for a week the end of Sept chasing cutties that rarely see a 2-legged predator for the same reasons. Being out there alone and self sufficient cleanses my soul, reminds me of what's important, and resets a tired and cynical mind. Do it. Take the risk. Put yourself in a position to fail, then feel the satisfaction when you don't. Its all about perspective and priorities. I'd rather come home empty than hang out in a camp with a half dozen guys.
  4. OD green with tan overspray. Panel loader with multiple internal organization pockets, side pockets for long items, 2 side compression straps and another 2 on the bottom, top pocket, padded waistbelt, adjustable shoulder straps and load lifters, hydration sleeve and hose port, internal aluminum frame stays plus HDPE frame sheet, pull out blaze orange air panel. I've used this professionally at work for the last 2 years and its been fantastic. Carried numerous optics, clothing, and a tripod with hog saddle as a daily basic load and attached first aid and quick access item pouches to the molle. Waistbelt and shoulder straps are very comfortable and it carries moderate weight well. It is not for the ounce counters but it is very durable and solidly built. Link to product: http://www.tacticaltailor.com/extendedrangeoperatorpack.aspx $200 FTF locally, $220 shipped. Would trade straight across for a Carter Like Mike release, Kifaru supertarp annex, or 1 dozen Black Eagle Spartan .001 300 shafts.

Tactical Tailor Extended Range Operator pack

I was hoping so but its been listed on 4 different sites with trade offers for stuff I don't need the only response. I get it. Its not what I would call a true "hunting pack." But it is very capable. I think its way overpriced on TT's website but that's why I'm offering it more realistically here. Thanks for the bump.

    Stone Glacier Backpack

To say that all packs other than SG are "below" them is ridiculous. Which pack is best for any given person is totally subjective based on the user's body type, physical dimensions, and use requirements. Any of the high end manufacturers offer features that may or may not be important and how you prioritize them depends on what you value most. I have not owned, handled in person, or tried on a SG pack. I would love to try one and if the opportunity arose, would purchase one in a heartbeat. I have used Kifaru packs extensively over the past 12yrs, well before Aron went to work for them. Aron is a great dude and has been awesome to scores of customers in all disciplines. In combat overseas, hunting here in the states, and for general backpacking I've trained in them and lived out of them for extended periods of time. They are heavier than an equivalent offering from SG or Kuiu but I have yet to wear anything with a load in it that carries or handles weight better. Again, I have not tried any of this in a SG but I've found no reason to. Weight is important but the difference isn't so great that I'm willing to give up the capability and comfort I've found in brand K. So to the OP: I'm sorry for not answering your question directly. I just think its vitally important to try them personally if you can then make a decision based on what suits you best. Unless you have personal reasons for remaining loyal to a specific manufacturer you shouldn't limit yourself to what I or any of my "friends" say are the best. Accept guidance and recommendations with a grain of salt.

    Who's shooting feathers?

In the event anyone is interested, I've finished my "load development." Its been a long road full of multiple wait times and somewhat expensive parts; the process of seeing what does best out of my particular weapon is always complicated. There's nothing quite like ordering and building arrows in 2s and 3s to both fuel the excitement and frustrate my progress. So here's the final product: Black Eagle Deep Impact 300 shafts. 3", 4-fletch Ozark feathers. Firenock Aero Outserts (I know... we'll see). RMS Gear Cutthroat 150gr broadheads. Total weight: 485gr FOC: 19% The things fly great, we'll see how they do at distance over the next couple days.

My question is on this, do they print to scale? I mean, other than topographical features, can you navigate with them?

The Power of a New String

Good advice. Although the string I just replaced was mainly for looks and fun, the one I swapped on my previous 10yr old Bowtech I'm sure suffered from the same malady. Good strings certainly aren't cheap but unless it gets damaged, its good insurance about every 2 yrs.

    Merino socks????

Smartwool is also on Promotive if you qualify for that, 30% off everything all the time.

    Merino socks????

Same pair for me. They're so thin and light that is I need to wash them it's easy and they dry fast. I've used that system my whole life for skiing.

    Merino socks????

I've been wearing merino socks daily for over 10yrs. From boot socks overseas to boot socks here in Phx to ankle high running socks, all on a daily basis, there is no better material for pretty much any activity. And the Patagonia socks, of which I have probably a dozen pairs, have lasted literally a decade. Obviously I'm totally sold on the material. I'm ordering a few pairs of First Lite socks to replace those that are getting thin.

    SPOT or Sat Phone?

Sat phone was too much of an investment for me and the DeLorme inReach seemed to solve the problem for me. I say that however, without having actually used it yet. The thing arrived just a few days ago. Reviews from users, research off their website, and recommendations from personal friends helped make my decision. The SPOT does some very similar things but what tipped the scale for me was the easy subscription terms and its operation through the Iridium sat network. The whole point of buying one of these was worst case use and if it isn't reliable or doesn't catch a satellite then its not worth the money or subscription. DeLorme seems to have the best features. They're also owned by Garmin so I would imagine there will be cross compatibility with their GPS units in the future.

    Hogwire bowstrings

The string set itself is $115, I ordered it with some wax for $125 total. Pretty reasonable when compared to WC or America's Best. I can't pay close to $200 for a new string. And for the record, there was nothing wrong with the WC set that came on the bow. It was performing very well and obviously, was fast enough. I just wanted something a little more personal and attractive to my eye.

    Hogwire bowstrings

Thanks man. Its shooting quite well. First time using one of his strings and although I thought I'd pick up a little more speed making the swap, the craftsmanship and cool color selection made it an exciting prospect. I'll chrono it again in a month or so and see if it improves but its not my first priority anyway. Brownell Fury material, by the way. I'm usually a function over form guy but it does look darn good...

    Complete archery outfit for sale

Not sure what your circumstances are but unless you're looking to replace this with something better after you heal up, I'd keep it. I'm less than 4 months post op from a shoulder replacement and I've been shooting my 70lb Elite for the last month and a half. It's my 2nd surgery on that shoulder, my 4th between both sides, and although I still have some work ahead, it's coming back far quicker than expected. Best of luck with your recovery.

  20. Converting to a smaller diameter shaft this season and thought maybe some of you out there might want to give these a try. Total of 4 nighted nocks: Firenock E3h-R 3-pack lighted nock set plus 1 extra. Comes with matched weight practice nocks (green), shock end caps, installation tool, and 7 batteries. Installation instructions included along with a few extra red nocks. LED color is red and total system weighs 23gr. These were installed on ACC 340s so they fit a shaft with a similar ID. From Firenock's webpage: Fit most medium diameter carbon shafts with internal diameter (ID) of 0.229" - 0.233" (can fit as small as 0.205") These have been incredibly reliable. They activate upon firing your bow and are very bright. Turning them off requires bouncing the arrow nock first on a hard surface. I've never had one break when doing this even on the concrete of my patio in the back yard. I can turn them off by bouncing them on top of my Rhinehart after pulling them. Total cost for this new off the website is close to $120. I'm offering them here for $70 shipped.
