    The new"Ringer" release

I'll probably be in the store sometime over the next 2 days and will take a look. Love my Carter Quickie but have been thinking about getting away from the index finger trigger, or at least trying something else. Thanks.

    What arrows to use

Your arrows won't work. You should give your tag to me. And I'm shooting 509gr sticks, just FYI :]]

I'll go hog hunting with ya! With the 175 head I'm pushing a total of 200gr up front also as the insert (according to Easton's specs) weighs 23gr. I'll give you a call over the weekend, there are a coue questions I have for you unrelated to arrow stuff. I've also got 4 different VPA heads if you wanna try them sometime: 150 and 175 in both 2- and 3- blade.

    Arrow builders

Good evening folks, New to this site and interested in a lot of the discussions. I've done some reading here and found it very informative. I'm in the market for a new set of arrows and would prefer to work with a local builder vs online ordering. I've had great success with a few online shops but would like to find someone to deal with near home. I live in the east valley of Phoenix, AZ and other than Archery Headquarters in Chandler, don't know of a place or person that specializes or takes great care in building arrows. Anyone out this way have a source they'd like to share? I'm looking at a dozen ACC 340's. Thanks for your help. -Jeff.

    WTB: Bowtech OEM cable guard

FWIW, Ross Outdoors called Bowtech and ordered a factory cable guard for me. And they're not going to charge anything for it. "Well done" to both Ross and BT!
  8. I'm looking for a stock cable guard for an 06 Bowtech Allegience. One from a Tribute may work too but I believe those were shorter axle to axle. Anyway, trying to save a few bucks over ordering a new one which, I expect, will be expensive since it's so outdated.

Eric, out of curiosity what do you consider heavy FOC? With your FMJ's, how heavy are they and how much FOC are you getting with them? The guys at Ross Outdoors ordered me a new factory cable guard for my bow and as soon as I get that installed and the bow tuned correctly, I'm gonna run both arrows through their chronograph. For as much as I'm trying to stay away from using speed as a deciding factor here, it may just come down to that since both seem to be performing extremely well. It all may be a moot point anyway as it appears I didn't make the elk draw... Is there a "pissed off" smiley on here somewhere??

Should I switch to a drop away?

I agree with Creed, my QAD Ultra is awesome. The arrow cannot fall off unless I want it to so that whole issue just doesn't exist. It's been completely reliable, is infinitely adjustable, and is quiet and consistent. Go with what you feel the most confidence in. Redman is right about the mental aspect. Confidence will improve your shooting no matter what rest you go with.

    Arrows/Broadheads

With a 2-blade head how long does that single cut need to be so that it does open up like that? I fully understand a single laceration stretching open and expanding, I see that at work every week. And on a scared and injured animal that jumps and runs, at least for a short distance, I wouldn't think there is a way it could close up and stop bleeding. Lots of 2-blade heads out there with cutting diameters 1.25" or less, what have you guys seen with holes that size? Like elpepe stated, even a sharp stick will kill as long as it's in the right place so I'm not addressing shot placement here, merely wound size and exterior blood loss.

Just realized I've kinda said all the above previously in this thread. I don't want to come across as argumentative, at least not on this topic. Yesterday's work schedule kicked my butt and I didn't remember that AverageJoe and I have already touched on this subject. In the end I think he's right on 2 points: 1) "extreme" FOC is trending and I don't know if its truly necessary and, 2) "to each his own," as he pointed out. I'm very pleased with what I'm seeing in these arrows and I think they'll do well.

So how much, and I'm just asking for your opinion here, do you feel this piece of the puzzle should be? What amount of FOC is acceptable to you? Based on the calculations generated by the OT2 software, my combination of shaft, nock, vanes, inserts, and 175gr head yields a FOC of 15.59%. I don't consider that extreme but it is starting to push the higher end. I would agree that some of the "extreme FOC" guys out there preach a bit much. I would agree that there seems to be a somewhat ridiculous obsession lately with who's FOC is bigger. I do not believe I need 30% but half that seems to me to be a very attainable and realistic goal that represents a good compromise. A 150gr head gives me 13.88% and a 125, 11.99. The velocity spread between a 125gr head and a 175 is 24fps. From my perspective, if a certain combination of components gives me equally accurate flight with a quieter shot with better potential penetration then it sounds like a winner. I haven't shot these through a chronograph yet but again, according to OT2, my 515gr arrow is traveling at about 243fps. While I feel that's fast enough, I'm open to your thoughts/experience/advice.

Still playing with the numbers and flight so this isn't quite over yet. I kinda like the 150 head the best in terms of overall size; it's more compact with less wind-catching blade surface than it's heavier counterpart and puts the arrow weight at 491. The 2-blade 175's shoot the best out of a basically untuned bow but I'm having the string and cables replaced soon and I'm upgrading to an actual stabilizer instead of the 6" heavy dong that's on there now so we'll see. Once I get everything worked out and get it tuned better I'll make a final decision. Still gonna shoot the CT's though. Great arrow.

It's an experiment. I've got a dozen CT Rhinos that weight 440 with a 125gr head. They fly well too but the point of building something heavy was to push the bow to be more efficient, increase KE and momentum, and obtain higher FOC, all at the same time. I'm not overly concerned with speed. It's a consideration but not at the top of my priority list. OT2 puts my speed with this arrow at about 245. I'd love it to be higher but not at the expense of the above goals. Considering guys with short recurves are whacking big critters with heavy arrows and low speeds every year, I don't think I'll have any problems.

Shot all 3 into the cleanest areas of my target this morning. None of them clearly out penetrate the other and they all averaged about 15.5" at 20yds. The 2-blade though consistently seemed to penetrate just a bit more. Not enough to make a guy say "wow" but there was no doubt it went .5"-1" deeper over 3 rounds of shots. If I can round up some ballistic gelatin at work I'll try it in that.

I haven't shot anything other than a foam Block tgt. I'd like to shoot virgin spots on my tgt before answering the penetration question but at the moment I'm finding the 3 blade penetrating deeper than the 2. In some of the more beat up areas the shaft is burying all the way up to the fletching on the long aspect of the tgt.

Whatever I have a tag for. Edit: Didn't mean to sound like a smartass... But honestly, whatever's in front of me. I chose a heavier head to boost my total arrow weight and improve FOC numbers. The 175 puts my arrow at 515gr and 16% FOC.

    Here's a look at the 3 BH's I've been shooting. L to R: 150 3-blade, 175 2-blade, 175 3-blade. This one's actually a better picture and shows the additional length of the bigger 3-blade. Its also 1/8" wider cut.

I cut about a 1/2" off the nock end which took the uni bushing with it. Thanks to GotBowAz for the help with that!

So I ordered a digital grain scale from 3 Rivers Archery along with a few other things. I weighed every complete arrow without the point/BH: 8 of them came out at 338gr and 4 at 336. I found this unbelievable. I figured they'd all be close but had no expectation that 2/3's of them would be exactly the same, and the remaining within 2gr. Is this normal? Have you guys found this same degree of consistency?
