    Tuning questions

This makes sense to me because I am a rifle shooter by profession. However, based on all the broadhead tuning articles and blogs and pro tips I've read, moving the rest to tune broadheads seems to be a perfectly acceptable and correct way of doing things. I completely agree with the rifle barrel analogy but we don't have the ability to move the rifle barrel; therefore, every adjustment to the rifle that we do to zero it must be done through the sights. If that results in running out of windage and elevation travel in the sights or scope then we look at other ways to bring that adjustment back into its center. Cable stretch may be the culprit or the string.... Its all one unit with the Bowtech. I'll start with examining my cams to make sure they're turning over together then paper tune. Once I get clean holes there I'll start fiddling with my sight. Might try a lighter weight BH too but the 150s are shooting left also and going lighter than that starts messing with shaft spine.

    Tuning questions

Good call, both of you. I'll paper tune it again just to be sure. There's no reason with the speeds I'm not shooting that I should get planing like this at 20 yds. I mean, I don't understand all the physics of it but I'm shooting a heavy arrow with an older bow and getting chronographed speeds of around 260fps. According to OT2, I'm not over/underspined. In fact, this very combination yields a dynamic spine of 338; dang near exactly on the spine rating for this shaft. FOC is just a hair under 16%. I tested 3 different vanes before settling on these. Yeah, I gotta paper tune and see what's going on.

    Tuning questions

Dave: it is maxed out, I'll give that a try tomorrow. Becker: I paper tuned it last spring with these same arrows and it came out fine, or so I thought. I was kind of leaning that way though, thinking I'd have to re-do it just to make sure. I don't believe I'm torquing the bow but I guess it could be happening. I've spent a lot of time paying close attention to my bow hand, string contact with my face, playing with stabilizer weight and distribution... I figure I've got a pretty good handle on torque. But, it is possible. My son has this slo-mo video feature on his phone. Its quite awesome. And it makes identifying things like torque and arrow flight much easier. I'll have him record a few shots next time he's over.

    Stabilizer setups

I know this is an old thread but its such a good one, packed with lots of good info, I just had to resurrect it. It appears that I'm zeroing in on the perfect weight distribution for my bow. I set all this down for a little bit last summer due to a lot of other things but I've started shooting more now. The good thing about a bandwagon I guess, is that you can always jump back on.... Anyway, its looking like 4ozs out front and 9ozs on the side bar are working really well. Very steady and it keeps everything level without me having to pay such close attention to the bubble. Only problem is, 9oz has me putting the big 4oz disks meant for the front stabilizer on the side bar; 2 of them. They're big and kinda get in the way a little. And as always, Bee Stinger is backordered on the 8oz stack of smaller weights I'm tempted to start stacking washers on it out of my tool box.

    Switched to a hinge...

So what were you shooting before and what's making you love it? Just asking cuz I've been kicking this idea around for a while myself. Only back tension release I've shot has been the Ringer and that was only for a dozen arrows. I'm intrigued.

    Throwing flies

Really glad you guys are enjoying the pics. I think I took as many photos as I made casts but these are some of the better ones. Thank God the new iOS for the iphone included a self-timer function in the camera! I know each of us has a special place that speaks to our hearts and souls, this is mine. While CO is full of beautiful places, the San Juan Mountains and the areas around Silverton and Durango are my personal nirvana and if I have the time/money, this is where I will ALWAYS choose to go. Looks like the weather is warming up just a bit around Durango, enough to make standing in the water all day bearable. We'll see. Doesn't much matter if I wind up with frostbite, I'm gonna do it regardless. Havasuhunter: the Sierras sound fantastic and its a place I'd call my close second choice. I grew up in Thousand Oaks and the eastern Sierras were a playground for me as a teenager. Mammoth Mountain is still one of my favorite places to ski and I love the Bishop/Lone Pine/Owens River Valley area. Let me know when you plan your trip!

    So today I did this . . .

LOL, NO!! Let that simmer a bit...
  8. My license from last year expired on the 17th. I submitted for the draw online with my SSN and left the dept. ID number as it was. It was accepted and went through without a hitch. I then went back to the license purchase page and bought a new license with the same dept ID number on it. Bummer you had trouble with it. Little stuff like that drives me crazy too but I worked around it somehow without wasting a stamp or my time.

    Elk & Antelope Draw Odds

Unit 6A, 11-24 Sept, archery elk, 1 bp, resident. Unit 22N, 13-26 Nov, archery elk, 1 bp, resident. Thank you, sir.
  10. Terrel at AZ Custom Bowstrings: 480.201.2592 New string set constructed of BCY452X by Terrel. Pre-stretched, installed, and tuned in a day. A minor miscommunication, completely on my part, resulted in a full silver color string but who really cares when you pick up 12fps. Along with this was the replacement of the Windstalker device with a factory cable guard and slide. Now the tuning can truly begin.
  11. Been absent for a while on vacation in Heaven (SW CO) and doing a lot of fly fishing. I just received a Kifaru Nomad, Duplex frame, and Camp Bag. I'm sure this is no stranger to many on here, and I've been Kifaru guy for quite a while having used several extensively overseas, but this is the first true "hunting" pack I've owned. The possibilities with this thing are endless and I've got plans to not only pack out every animal I shoot but take it on a long list of backcountry fishing trips in the mountains. There are a maze of customizable adjustments and I'm just getting into them but its ridiculously comfortable. I'm not a big Kryptek fan so its gonna get its own custom camo job this week. Just thought I'd show it off a bit

    New knives!

One of the guys I work with started dabbling in making knives out of his garage about 2 yrs ago. Since then he's invested quite a bit in better equipment, techniques, and knowledge and now turns out some really great blades. His business is named "MilMak AZ" and these are produced here in Phoenix, AZ. I recently asked him to make me a new hunting knife. Although I gave him a list of specific requirements, I left the details up to him. I don't know enough about different steels or grinds or whatever but know his attention to detail and exacting standards. On top of that, this is a guy I literally trust my life to nightly... and vice versa. So we both have a great deal of trust in each other and concern for each other's opinion. I asked him for a relatively short bladed knife but with a full handle, a drop point, a blade strong enough to push into a heavy shoulder or hip joint, and a steel that would not only hold a decent edge but be easy to sharpen in the field. What he came up with is below and I find it dang near perfect: 3/16" 1085 steel, flat ground. This knife is going to be part of a set with the one above. The blade is shorter, thinner, and has a finer edge. I see the set as being kind of a gutting/skinning combo. MilMak AZ can be found on Facebook and Instagram with many more photos of his work. If you're in the market for a new blade and can't seem to find what you're looking for already out there, or just don't want to pay ridiculous prices for some of them, give this guy a look.

The last pack I'll ever need

Thanks bro. In the end, it came down to an attitude of "don't mess with what isn't broken." I have a history with Kifaru and although they are wickedly expensive, the peace of mind in having something this critical on my back is worth the extra dough. Still want a Stone Glacier though...

The last pack I'll ever need

I'd say "great" but it was more of a family camping trip than a pure fishing trip. We spent 4 days in the Dolores River Valley and 5 days in Durango. I fished the Dolores, West Dolores, and Animas Rivers and hit Alta Lakes above Telluride and Haviland Lake north of Durango. Caught fish in everything but the Animas despite the $60 in streamers I spent specifically for that river and the brand new Hatch 5+ I bought specifically for my 6wt rod. No big deal; it wasn't my first time on that river and it sure as heck won't be my last. It goes without saying the scenery and environment in that part of the state makes the "catching" part secondary to the "fishing" part, at least as far as I'm concerned. BIG plans in that area for this pack...

    kuiu icon 5000** SOLD!

REALLY glad to hear you sold this thing. I gotta admit, I felt some guilt not buying it because it sounded like this wasn't something you wanted to do, rather you had to. If I weren't already a $300 down payment into another one for the past couple months I'd have picked it up. Best of luck in whatever you're going through.

    Stabilizer setups

Finally found some time to get things installed and do some shooting. Holy one-hole-groups, Batman! Just getting started playing with weights to find the right combination but with everything installed as it comes in the package, its pretty dang good. Thanks for everyone's help, the difference is dramatic and well worth the time and expense.

    Shipping ammo usps ???

I know this is an old thread, so to speak, but I wanted to add my experience to this topic. About a year ago I shipped about 300 rounds of match grade Hornady AMAX to a buddy in the midwest. I did it through USPS in a flat rate box because I was being a cheap a$$ and thought I could get away with it. Honestly, I didn't realize it was illegal to ship ammo via USPS but I had my suspicions. Anyway, the box arrived at my buddy's place sure enough but all the ammo was gone. what was in the box was a small barbie doll. Yes, a doll. All the ammo had been stolen. Absolutely unbelievable. When my buddy attempted to get it investigated they told him ammo was an unauthorized item to ship via USPS and the package was uninsured. So, if the items being shipped are something on their list of unauthorized items and the package is uninsured its ok to commit a federal felony within their organization. The bullets aren't going to shoot themselves or spontaneously explode. I guess I'm in the wrong business: shoulda been a postal worker then I could go through everyone's uninsured packages and take what I want. Anyway, don't ship a dam thing through USPS. Heck, I've even heard similar stories about UPS. The whole subject makes me sick. Sorry for the rant.

    Stabilizer and cable slide

Stealth Archery stabilizer: 6" long, 10ozs in Realtree Hardwoods Green. This has got a limbsaver screwed into the threaded end. Front end is female threaded so if you want to take the limbsaver off it ends cleanly. Also allows you to add weight disks is you want. Excellent condition with no scratches, wear marks, dents, or rust. Does a great job at deadening vibration and quieting the bow. $50 shipped. Alpine Archery Mach 5 cable slide. I had real hopes for this but for whatever reason it doesn't fit my factory Bowtech cable guard the way it should. Just a tad too tight on the guard. If it works for you then fantastic and you can take it off my hands. Its BRAND NEW, never been shot, only installed to check fit. Bought it straight from alpine for $16.95 +shipping cuz I couldn't find the Hardwoods Green HD version elsewhere. $16 shipped so you save a dollar plus shipping.
