Glad to hear someone there is listening because that's exactly what they failed to do when I called and when my son stopped in. If they are making changes or closely examining their attitude then perhaps there is hope for a professional east valley alternative and not the exclusive, you're-not-one-of-us fraternity that its been. If that's what they want then they need to close the doors, charge a membership, and look down they noses at paper bullseyes in private. We'll see.

    Ross Archery

Totally agree. Ross Outdoors is a great shop with people who not only know their business but are friendly and helpful. They make you want to come back and spend your money. Archery HQ was the exact opposite. Nothing but standoffish attitude on the phone and they treated my son who was brand new to the sport and looking for guidance and advice, like sh!t. If they don't agree with your equipment choices they're gonna do their best to make you feel like an idiot for choosing what you did and that's 100% NOT what a new archer needs to hear or feel. They're a headquarters alright, for arrogance and asshattery.

    4 days on the Yellowstone

Very much appreciate your comments and I've passed them along to my wife. She's cracking up! And to think this is a woman very resistant to my ideas of moving to Ridgway, CO and wants to stay in the big city... Anyway, yes it was a great trip and like I mentioned in the first post, pretty easy considering what unfolded in front of us on the trail. I would highly recommend not thinking of it as a major undertaking. I've got another trip in the final planning stages for the end of Sept: headed back to CO for the colors and to reacquaint myself with Jesus. This one should be better than last year's fall trip as I'm going 2 weeks earlier. Gonna chase more cutties in some small creeks!

    Card Hit

I'm hoping so. On the other hand, the hit to our card came over the weekend and as of now it shows "pending." The lady on the phone said my wife drew but was calling to confirm the card which I found odd since its already posted on our bank statement. What I'm really hoping is that they are 2 separate charges which would mean I got drawn too. But, the pessimist in me says that's not the case and that the charge and phone call are one in the same. Edit: Just checked the bank acct and now there are 2 separate charges for $135. Holy sh!!!t, could this be real??

    Card Hit

Just got a call from AZGFD about a CC. The wife got drawn for rifle elk, don't know which yet. I put her in for 1 bull hunt and the rest cow. Still holding out for my archery hunts...

    Monday Hits only thread.

When will the results be posted on the GFD website? We got hit over the weekend but don't know who's app got the tag... Either the wife got a rifle tag or I pulled an archery.

    Lees ferry

Are you headed to the walk in section of the river or hiring a guide to take you up river? I'd give Leesferry.com or leesferryflyfishing.com a call or email them to see what's working currently. They've been pretty helpful with info, especially about the walk in area. Midges always seem to work well in those tailwaters.

    Card Hit

I think if you did draw you'll get a call from the game and fish if there are issues with the card. Thinking the same thing. I've heard of them doing that but I have yet to successfully draw so I don't know first hand. My wife however, drew a rifle tag so we'll get out there regardless. We'll get to christen my new 300 winmag on her hunt. Pretty awesome.

    Card Hit

I thought there was an email they sent out saying when the deadline for updating was? Got one last year, nothing this.

    Card Hit

Well that's awesome since my card was just renewed. I'm spazzing... Nevermind. It oughta go through if I get drawn anyway; same card number, new expiration date. I hope.

Why is it that when I try to update my payment info I am unable to select a species?? Its a mandatory field but I get no list of choices when I try to use it!!!!!!

    BACKPACKING BOOTS OPINIONS NEEDED

Thought I might share a recent encounter with Salomon's warranty: Last Aug I purchased a pair of Quest 4D boots for use as a dual hunting/backpacking boot. I wore it around the house and to work for about 2 weeks before heading out on a 4 day trip to Havasupai Falls in Sept. This is a very popular hike and the trail isn't particularly rough but it is a little on the long side: something like 10 or 11 miles, one way. The boots performed very well on the trip. So well, in fact, that I continued to wear them everyday at work for the next 4 months and on a couple of short hikes near the house. I spend a lot of time on my feet in my occupation and generally carry quite a bit of weight. After a total of 5 months in the boots, 4 days a week, I began to notice the outside corner of the both heels coming apart. The sole was coming off the midsole just at those 2 corners. I don't know if its the way I walk or what but honestly, with what Salomon charges for these boots and the manner in which they market them, I wouldn't expect them to start coming apart after less than 6 months. I called Salomon and described this very thing to them. The nice woman that helped me out emailed a few forms to fill out, which I did, and emailed them right back along with a couple photos of the damage. This was just over 2 weeks ago. Last Friday I received a brand new pair of boots on my front door step. No charges to me. No requirement to return the damaged boots. No further questions asked. I've been a Salomon customer for over 25 yrs, starting with ski equipment, then to early versions of hiking boots, trail running shoes, and now these boots. They've always built a great product and been at the forefront of technology and innovation. Apparently their warranty and customer service is just as solid as their products. I intend to repair the older boots with shoe goo and continue to use them at work. The new pair will hang out and wait for that elk tag that I'm gonna get drawn for this year...

    Animas River winter trip

Just got home late Sat night from 4 days on the Animas south of Durango, CO. I'd never been fishing in the dead of winter and wanted to experience that. Plus, it was a good excuse to get back into that part of the country. Any excuse works, really... I fished the Ute Tribal waters south of town, with one day spent on public water at the Purple Cliffs area. To cut to the chase, I didn't land a single fish. I did catch one fish but that glorious experience ended literally seconds after it started when the tippet broke at the connection with the leader. It wasn't a knot failure because the knot was still on the tippet ring. Super disappointed/frustrated. I tried everything in my arsenal except for dries but I never saw a fish rise once, and I was looking for it. Durango was awesome in the none super-tourist season and it felt more like regular life rather than the carnival atmosphere in the summer. I talked to some friends at a local shop and met up with a local guy who runs his own blog specifically on the Animas River. He gave me a lot of tips for where and what to fish. Ultimately, it didn't catch me anything but it was sound advice nonetheless. Its been 4 months since I was last in the area and heading out of town was difficult. But I have the family vacation to look forward to in July and then another solo trip in the fall. Here's a few pics to help fuel the fire:

    Throwing flies

So, in the last couple years I've had a HUGE resurgence in the amount of fly fishing I've been doing. Far more time/money/effort dedicated to this than pretty much anything else outside of work. The fam and I spent 9 days in SW CO last July then I headed back up there solo in late Oct. Visited the San Juan in NM for 2.5 days before heading north through Dolores into the most beautiful mountains in the world. Spent another 2.5 days on the San Miguel between Telluride and Norwood. I've known this is where I belong for over 35 yrs. Why I'm not there now is something I struggle with daily. I'm headed back to the Animas south of Durango in 3 weeks, gonna get about 4 days of cold weather fishing in. Might split that trip with another couple days on the Juan; its only an hour south. Here's a few pics I thought I'd share of the Oct trip. It will become an annual one. The colors and feeling of being in that country then are beyond spectacular and it refills my soul. Hope you guys enjoy, every trip up there ends with a drive back planning the next one. First San Juan fish in the net. Late afternoon storm rolled in and soaked me clean through what I thought was a solid rain shell. This 10 yr old jacket was replaced the next day. Great weather the rest of the time. Campground at 9000' right off the highway. Couldn't be more perfect. THIS is why I left the fishing on the Juan! The San Miguel near Norwood. First fish out of the San Miguel. The San Miguel near Specie Creek. A good meal makes all the difference!

    Throwing flies

Simplest way I would guess, is to take some classes through Cabelas or Bass Pro. Both offer casting classes and basic fundamentals, I think Bass Pro's are free. Otherwise, find a buddy that does or buy and inexpensive rod/reel and search YouTube for instructional videos. I've been fly fishing my whole life, since probably 12 yrs old or so when my uncle taught me. Be forewarned though, this is not a cheap experience. I mean, sure it CAN be cheap. But it seems most that fall in love with it see, want, rationalize, purchase, repeat. I've spent well over $3000 in the last 2 yrs. Granted, it's been equal parts need vs want... Ok, it's been 70% want. Can't hide that. Check out AZ Flycasters or other fly fishing clubs around the valley also. Great resources and people willing to help out and save you money. AZ Flycasters also hosts monthly trips to local waters and an annual trip to the Juan in Oct.

    Throwing flies

Maybe we oughta put together a CWT trip... maybe up to the Juan or Lee's Ferry? A few hours further and we could be on the Gunnison. I go annually to the Black River with a couple guys from work. We park the truck and hike in for a day or so, fishing the whole way, then camp for a couple days on the river. Great bass fishing although, that's not really my first choice. Its still getting out in the trees for a few days. But I'm completely in for the same kind of trip hunting trout.

    Tuning questions

I know this topic comes up a lot but I can't seem to get my head working this evening. My field points are hitting really well; consistent and accurate and they seem to be flying well. When I swap them for broadheads of the same weight everything hits about 2" left. They are 2-bladed one piece heads and thought wind planing first. So I tried different orientations of the blade to fletching to see if that might make a difference. Nope. Then I tried moving the arrow rest 1/32" right. This worked and brought the BH's into the center, but guess what happened to my field points? Yeah, 2" right. Here are my arrow specs: ACC 340's 26.5" long. 175gr field points. 175gr VPA 2-blade BH. Firenocks 3.6" Flex Fletch vanes, 3-fletch, right helical Total arrow weight: 509gr. I just picked up a dozen FMJs from a buddy. He builds them really heavy and shoots a 100gr head with them. These things are shooting the same hole but with a slightly different BH (vented). Still a 2-blade though. Literally no difference from FP to BH. Arrow specs on that set: FMJ 340s, 26.5" long. 155gr steel and brass inserts at the front. 100gr field points. 100gr Silverflame vented BH. Standard nocks. Small shield-type vanes, maybe AAE, 3-fletch right helical. Total arrow weight: 583gr Shooting a BT Allegiance, QAD drop away rest, with a release. Is it the vented heads not catching any wind? Is there a way to fix this? I've got quite a bit invested in the ACCs and would like to stick with the VPAs at that head weight but I guess I could change things up. Plus, the vented Silverflames hiss all the way to the tgt which I don't care for.

    Tuning questions

Totally dig this description and I'm embarrassed to say I never thought of it this way. Again, as a professional rifle shooter, this makes absolute sense: treat the bow, once tuned, as you would the fixed rifle action/barrel/stock. Then zero that action like you would a scope. Well no screamin' eagle s#@@$%t, son!! How the heck'd you miss that one?! So the plan is to paper tune the bow as perfect as I can get it, like wht_mtnman says, getting the best tear I can get, then "zero" my Spot Hogg to start hoggin' spots. I'm helping conduct a haze-fest with a bunch of guys at work over the next 3 days but will get on this pronto after that. Really appreciate all the feedback and help on a topic that's likely been beaten to death repeatedly. This place is pretty awesome.

    Tuning questions

Not at all, didn't read it that way and it never occurred to me. I appreciate the feedback. The reality of this is, it serves me right for neglecting my bow for so long.
