Where Are You Going to be Opening Morning?
Atypical replied to Red Rabbit's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
great questions and answers.. getting everyone fired up.. I'll be trying to sneak 125 yards around the horn and beat AZP&Y to the buck laying next to this doe (top left).. -
Congrats Doug-e-Fresh. Also note, that the pigs in the second pic were made through the 10x binos, and you can see them in teh first pic of pops glassin. They're about an inch top right from the green spanish spoon near the bottom center. Hard to see, but they're there. Pops aka Gunner, bowhunting at 74, found them twice that day which in itself is a success, then stalked in for the shot. Keep up the good work, and good luck on more points in this year's draw Mike

Matty, Not to pile on too much, but that is a great accomplishment and an example of solid perseverance in persuit of the goal and that is what is takes, sweat and time. Good to use lots of gear that you pack around. Funny 'ex' comment too, lol. Thanks for helping Doug w/the bow and keep up the good work! Mike

Great accomplishment, congrats. Doug and I are on your heels in 33/37b and will post em up after the weekend (ok, i hope ). I'm sticking with the bad-to-the-bone 4 blade muzzy 100gr. Mike

Hi all, Two part question... Other than AZG&F suggested Buckeye area for dove hunting, can anyone suggest any other public places for doves near PHX / Chandler areas? I use to hunt in a Queen Creek area which is now houses. Not asking for honey holes, just maybe some other public places that dont have a million hunters. I scouted Mineral Mtns near Globe and a couple tank had some fly over but not much mesquite for homes. Also, if anyone wants to go would be fun to get some guys and go. Good luck, Mike B

Fantastic bruiser, and better than mom got to get it..

Congratulations, that is my goal - find a big coues with my trail cam and shoot with my bow. Lots of effort and great pay off, beautiful big deer and great end-to-end hunting accomplishment!

Squirrel hunting fun!
Atypical replied to CouesWhitetail's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
Amanda, Great close up video (and soundtrack) and allowing your friends to experience that.. I got a couple squirrells while I was also turkey scouting and they bbq'd up fine that night, and took my girlfriend shooting the shotgun when patterning and she now wants to go squirrell and dove hunting and take the safety course. That was a shocker. Good hunting, Mike B -
After missing a 400 yard downhill shot last year, I got pissed off enough to improve my gear and practice more. I bought the Leopold scope with the B&C BDC (after getting critiques and advice from this CWT forum – thanks) and practiced at the range and in the desert for 300, 400, and 500 yard shots with a home made target. I found the Remington Bronze Tip bullet shot better than the Hornady Ultra Mag’s w/my 30.06 (again, with more advice on ballistics from this forum, thanks). Here’s the story for those interested in a lengthy read. Pops and I had seen about 10 does from the am to mid afternoon, but no bucks. I moved a mile east and was glassing atop a knoll around 3p when I saw two 4x4's walking from the top of a little hill down into a wash, ranged at 392 yards, east of me to bed. Even without the glasses I could see their racks glistening in the sun with naked eye. The bigger one laid down finding shade from two big Spanish Sword Yucca’s, still within sight, while the smaller one went out of sight 30 more yards down into the cool wash. I tried pictures through my swaro 15’s but they did not turn out. I was going to go prone and shoot on my bag at 400 yards but vitals were obstructed, there were too many ocotillo's in front of me and also in front of the bedded deer to shoot. So I had to move into a better shot, I walked east, the wind was north at about ~8-10mph. I closed the gap to about 225 gingerly sneaking through the cat claws, up and down washes, concerned for the deer I could not see to bust me. I was in position 90 minutes later with decent shooting lanes. I then found the head and rack of the other deer lower in the wash also in yucca shade. I sat it out, switching between my rifle scope on the Stoney Point sticks, and Leopold 10x’s watching for the big one to present a shot, confidence high from practicing and surprisingly calm. The small one got up, walked over near the bigger one and gave me a broadside shot, 225 over a ravine with a slight incline and the small wind. I decided to pass on the shot and wait out the bigger one, hoping he'd present a similar broadside shot, still or slowly walking. The smaller one then trotted back up the hill in which they came, showing nervousness by returning on their same safe trail. He may have smelled me. The big one then got up and trotted up the hill following the other one. I whistled and he slowed down, I took the shot, fast walking, quartering away, 225 yards, ~8mph wind and slight incline. Hit him, he jumped in the air and then ran crippled but capable straight up the hill, zig zagging around scrub. I shot two more times while he was running up hill and missed both. He then stopped at the top of the hill and sky lined, hopefully hurt and dazed. I wanted some insurance. Now about 275 yards quartering away in the ocotillos and a greater incline I shot again using the 300 pin to allow for the incline and it looked like he either dropped in his tracks or bolted over the skyline. I found him right there so he dropped. Whew. The two shots hit him around the same spot, entering about 6 inches behind the lungs on the right rear quarter side and just exploding out the left side taking guts and rear lung in a volley ball sized hole. I realized my mistake; I did not adjust for the wind which was why my shots were to the left about 6 inches from where I was aiming. Can’t believe I forgot about that. The rack was smaller than expected, still had some velvet, taxidermy’s guess is mid eighties, and a great gift. My eighth deer and finally a typical rack – all others are atypical – story of my life, lol. Only thing missing was AZP&Y, where you at?! Best of luck to everyone else and appreciate the talk and support of this forum. Cheers, Mike.

Wow, big head and big body. Managing water and heat was tough this year. Congrats.

For shotguns, I just bought a Mossberg (I think 810 or 835) 12 gauge, 26 inch barrell (longer one is 28) with the 3 1/2 inch chamber (also takes 3" and 2 3/4" size shells) and it came with the turkey choke which has the tightest restriction of about .40 plus - I cut/pasted bore restrictions below, not sure if they'll turn out. When I sighted it in, I was surprised that with the high end turkey load, like Federals with the good wad for long distance, I was getting a good shot grouping at 45-50 yards on a turkey head target, about 15-20 hitting spine and brains . A scope can be mounted, and was only about $400 and is synthetic stock, not fancy. Good luck. 12 Gauge .000" -.001" cyl .002" - .006" skeet .007" -.013" imp cyl .014" -.023" mod .024" -.031" imp mod .032" -.040" full .040"+ xtra full (turkey)

Good stuff. I'm in a similar position and need to make a decision, current set-up is Leupold 10x42's (compacts) around my neck and humping Swaro 15x56 in the pack for sitting glassin. Need to consider if two are best or pick one as the weight gets tough for long distance humping. Not to mention the option of a 20x42 spot scope to check a quality rack.

training my lab for duck season... some good quality pics
Atypical replied to a topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
That is awesome. Good luck and balance the 'friend and master' role for the best results. I had a similar looking lab, little 2 year old fartknocker, got her retrieving well for doves but never tried ducks. I bet that is much more complicated. Best success. Mike -
Nice pics. I spent alot of time near there, including a scout a few weeks ago and archery deer. Lots of people and as stated illegal traffic. Best to get way away from the roads. PM me if you like. Good hunting.

I hunted Warsaw last year in December, saw a coupel small ones and a 4 pointer. When scouting during the October hunt, it was indeed a parking lot, many 2 - 3 points hanging in the camps. They'll likely move out of there the first day w/all of the traffic and road hunters. Chap pants help as the stickers are bold.

Great persistence and congrats, well earned. Good for Pops to be in on it. Appreciate a good hunt story.

Congrats,1 nice rack. I lasted about 6 hours in 36b with the 105 degrees and insect swarms.
