280 AI load data 162 gr ELDx
452b264 replied to 452b264's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
PRDATR thanks for the referral he said his rifle with 162 ELDx and RL 23 hits max at 60.5 and suggested I start at 58 grains. The inventer of the Sherman cartridges suggested 58 grains to start also, and max may be as high as 61/62 grains said he was trying to save me some powder by starting at 58 gr. -

Thanks for the information. -
I watched a review on this rifle and it was shooting around .5 inch groups with factory ammo. Nice rifle.

I just received my rings last Saturday and mounted the scope. I changed my trigger from a timney to a Trigger Tech special 1 lb-3.5 lb. its on its way hopefully it will arive before the weekend. I will post it up after the trigger gets here.
-
I will second that, but add the strip.

A 280 rem. was the first rifle I bought myself, a beat up old 700 adl. Shot a truck load of deer with it, then the barrel went south.

Red stag is my sons dream hunt. My dream hunt is to hunt with Melissa Bachman, she takes a huge red stag on this hunt.

If you made me choose one rifle it would be my 3006 spr. ammo is everywhere, and it just works. I used a 7mm rem. for 25 years and a 300 win. for almost the same amount of time and just dont see any difference in its ability to drop game cleanly. I just built a 280 AI for a long range rifle that I can pack into really rough country, since I always take two rifles with me when hunting.

Sorry the stock is synthetic.

guess I'M JUST A PECKERWOOD WHO LIVES IN THE HILLS WITH TO MANY GUNS your BRUTAL firsty, but you still did not address my questions Full points for snarkiness ZERO points for addressing the issue To compete at distance with the 6.5s and 7mms the .277 needs a high BC bullet like the 165 gr. Matrix (BC about .630) loaded with Alliant rl 26 you can push it to about 2900 fps in a 24 inch barrel and it makes the old 270 win. a thumper, but its the only high BC bullet made for the 270 which is why it isnt as popular with the guys who shoot long range. "The 170 gr. EOL needs a 1/8 twist barrel and then you are limited to the heaviest bullets made for the 270" Per Bartlien barrels

Watch camofire.com they have been selling base layers lately.
-
I dont use cotton because it doesnt dry fast (at all) you can be sweating hard and sit down to glass and your dry in 10 to 15 minutes with good base layers, that moisture can get you chilled when its cold out and its a lot harder to get warm again. I am a back packer for the most part so your mileage may vary. cotton=vortex

Anyone else have "cheap" rifles that shoot stupid accurate?

Groups of 3 or 5? What's the 6th group going to tell you that the first group didn't? Consistency -
No need to get ruffled, I started this thread to allow discussion on the topic. It was surprising to me how polarizing this issue was. I know before you mentioned that there was conflicting data on this? You mentioned some statistics there, can you share your sources? I really do want to understand the topic better and do my part as a hunter to conserve our ecosystems. It seems that sources like huntfortruth.org think that this research was put forth by econazis intent on banning hunting. Thats why the podcast with Newberg was so enlightening. I would have otherwise never guessed that the Peregrine Fund was established by hunters and was a partner organization to AES, MDF, etc. I have learned a lot in the past few weeks and I am happy to say that endeavor started here. We can use CWT to facilitate conservation if we can just stop griping with each other. So no more hunting or shooting lead .22 or shot shells for you? I dont know about no more, but I certainly will change some habits. With our first rifle Kaibab hunt in the family coming up this year I will definitely either shoot copper or commit to taking the carcass out whole. Its a doe hunt, so pack out isnt as big of a concern. When I shoot gophers in MT I wont leave them out on logs for birds to eat. In all of this I havent read or heard anything about target shooting, so probably wont change that. As far as other big game, I dont do a lot of rifle hunting but when I do, I will consider alternatives to lead. My son had a 12 b tag and his grand father had given him his custom springfield 1903 3006 spr. right before he passed away. That rifle will not shoot copper bullets, but it loves 150 gr accubonds so we brought heavy contractor bags and I put the entire gut pile in it and hauled it off, we didnt leave anything for the condors.

You need to shoot 5 to 6 consecutive groups not one group.
