Take a look at this one, I have the 4 x 16 x 50 HSLR XLR a friend also has this same scope and has put it through a lot of back country hunts (horse and scabbard) and it has not failed. http://www.cameralandny.com/optics/vortex.pl?page=vortexviperhs4-16x50lrffp

Experiences with a .338 win mag / Suggestions for wet weather?
452b264 replied to kidso's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
I would use the 300 win with a 200 gr. partition the 200 gr. has the partition further forward and penetrates very well it has a different personality than the lighter bullets or the Barnes TSX. Unless you need an excuse to buy another rifle.- 27 replies

Dont sit on your be-hind when you call, sit in a chair, the ones I use have a triangle seat or stand up with your back to a tree, and rest your rifle on your shooting sticks, you don't want the lion to appear right on top of you , your very vulnerable. They dont always sneak in they may run full tilt right to you (ON TOP OF YOU) this has happen to me and a friend more than once. You may not hear him until its to late. Please don't ask why as I don't want to type that entire story, but on a short note I will never sit on the ground in my life again, the first one I called in was taken 35 inch from the end of the rifle barrel.

Did you two point bed the action or did you bed an 1 inch in front of the barrel nut?

Aim for bone they bust right through. I use them in a 300 wby. and a 308/3006 you will love em. I have seen three large mule deer and one elk taken with the 243 win. 80 gr. TTSX one shot each.

Many years ago I was scouting for deer in unit 23, while glassing a long canyon close to its head I saw a lot of dust fly directly across from me, but its details were hidden by forage moments later a large mature lion appeared with a coyote in its mouth, I watched the lion slowly pick his way down the canyon to the bottom where he disappeared into a large juniper for bread fest, this took a total of 45 min. I always carry my rifle when scouting but this time for some reason I left it at home and only carried my pistol, and I had a lion tag. ALWAYS CARRY YOUR RIFLE .

I have this same stove and tent and find it a perfect match for our needs, when its storming hard and well below freezing. That is a fair price.

Winchester M70 270wsm VS 300wsm: Conflicted and need insight.
452b264 replied to deserttacoma84's topic in Long Range Shooting
For a truly long range round you can rule out the 270 unless you are using the Matrix 165 gr. bullet. And I wouldn't shorten the barrel of either caliber, they both need at least 24 in. -

i agree with most of what you say. Except this is Southern Arizona, water is the biggest issue here, is it far from roads?,yes but alot is close to roads too. It's a far cry from the upper west coast that has moisture and food to support the tag numbers for years to come. A few years of heavy drought and half of az is done. High predator population is also very hard on the deer herd when their numbers become low.

I find it a little amusing to hear everyone complain about 2450 deer tags issued for unit 33. Where I grew up in the Pacific north west they issued 26,200 tags for my hometown unit, and I walked into game and fish bought two buck tags and walked out the door every year. I some very impressive bucks from there as do my friends, you have to hunt smarter and harder. The unit will still hold older age deer, you must be willing to look where they spend their time, no matter how rough or far from the road you must travel. You must look in places no one else will hunt. Very thick or straight up and down, 8 miles from the road etc.
