  1. So, I don't have a tag this year, but was wondering from the lucky hunters that drew what they have noticed with how the horn growth looks this year. I would imagine with the wet winter and spring that it would be a great year to have drawn a tag. Any comments or pictures for us non-tag hunters to be envious of??

    Elk Draw Progress

So we had 11 people apply as individuals and only have 1 tag based on CC hits. The GFD website shows that they are 60% progress on the payment processing. So are we screwed or is their still a chance. Seems to me the draw was a 2-3 day process and we are 8 days in. Anybody have a answer??

That is what I thought. Anybody have insight for Montana?
  4. My hunting partner of 42 years Sammy passed away last November. His son Eric inherited his Remington 30-06 that was a Christmas present his Grandfather gave to his Father around 1969. Over the years the factory wood stock was cracked on one of our hunting trips and Sammy put it away in the closet always intending to replace that cracked stock. That rifle sat in the closet for maybe 25 years. After he passed I asked his son Eric if I could restore the rifle for him so that maybe he could pass it along to his children some day. Somewhere along the way this rifle ended up with a black Remington synthetic stock installed. I would love to bring this piece of history back to as close a condition as the day he first opened it all those years ago. I was wondering if anybody has a factory ADL long action wood stock they would be willing to sell or possibly trade for the synthetic one it has on it now. Thanks

WTB Remington ADL Long Action Factory Wood Stock

Thanks so much for the responses. Twigsnapper has a wood stock that he took off a older ADL that should fit and has generously offered to donate to this project. Bowhnt has also stepped up with a old stock if Twigsnappers doesn't fit. Goes to show that great people are on this site. I will take some before, during, and after photos of the progress. And now the pressure is on for me to do a really good job. THANKS

WTS: Clearing out a few things

Do you have any Remington 700 LA wood stocks left for sale?
  7. Younghuntr, As a member of the "more experienced hunter" club I can say that I believe that your grandfather would be very, very proud of you. As a younger hunter you have discovered the secret to this hunting experience. And it is the experience, friendship, and shared memories that count most, and realizing this so early in your hunting career makes you miles ahead of the pack. Most definitely mount that deer and every time you view it will help you remember that grandpa was a big part of the story and for that brief moment it keeps your memories of him alive. One of the best written stories ive read. Makes me remember my own gramps. Thanks for sharing

    White Mountain Apache Elk

Greetings, A friend of mine is thinking of putting in for a cow Elk tag on the White Mountain Apache Reservation for this fall. I looking for info as to if anyone has done this hunt and can advise us as to what to expect.. Is it a real fair chase on your own hunt? Do you have to hire a Apache guide? Any info would be appreciated
  9. Greetings, I debated if I should even do this write up because although I am very proud of this buck, it pales in comparison to most others on this site. Then I decided that why not be proud and honor any and all animals that we take. Myself, my 2 sons, and 4 other friends and family spent the week between Christmas and New Years in the desert chasing deer, swapping stories, enjoying great food, and a few beers around the evening fire. If it gets better then that I don't know how. I saw this buck 2 different times from long range and twice I tried to close the distance but like they do he just "disappeared". When I saw him the 3rd time he was standing still and was watching my son Jason and I as we were hiking to our glassing spot. I managed to get a 220 yard shot at a broadside standing still deer that knew we were there. That in itself was very lucky on our part, or bad judgement on his part. Every year it get harder and harder to climb these hills and every year my comment is "I gotta get in shape" Thank God i still be have the ability to chase these gray ghosts. It never gets old and every buck no matter the size is a true trophy. My son already boiled out the skull and it will be a proud member of the wall of fame.

    36-C Late Rifle Hunt

Thanks for all the congratulations. It was a great time spent with friends and family. I know that you guys appreciate these memories with your own gang as much as I do with mine. I couldn't have made a better (mostly lucky ) shot and I appreciate the kudos. I had a chance to shoot a coyote at 200 yrds later in the week but didn't want to embarrass myself if I missed. I think I will enjoy the fact that for now my boys and my friends think I am a good shot.

  13. The post and pictures by Daverp on the success he has had in unit 10 got me all fired up for the deer hunt my son has a tag for in unit 9. I am expecting the same effort and luck that is required as daverp expressed in his post if he is to be successful. 9 is known as a Elk unit, but I know there are good bucks to be found. I was hoping that you guys could fire me up with some pictures and stories of your bucks that have come out of 9. Good luck to all the lucky tag holders out there, and no mater which unit you hunt pictures and stories that you share help keep the rest of us inspired.

    How big is he

I agree with Roosevelt Mark. if he is the best one shoot him. I think those NM seasons only last 3 days right?? Low 70's is my guess

    What do you guys think?

Its not that I don't realize that we all KILL the animals we hunt. It is a blood sport and not for everyone. My comment about disrespect was about putting 2 arrows into a mortally wounded Elk from 10 yards to a animal that wasn't yours and had no chance. More like a execution, thus the disrespect comment. This kill was all about the lack of fair chase and what is and isn't ethical. If he had made the original shot and was following up the recovery it would have been the proper thing to do. But to kill this bull this way was disrespectful to the animal and paints us all in a bad light.

    What do you guys think?

Just read this and my first thought was that a beautiful trophy elk was treated with such disrespect. The bull deserved much better. The world is way to completive and goal driven. Having a guide suggests that he may be a out of stater and perceived this hunt as a once in a lifetime deal and couldn't stand going home emptyhanded. No way am I condoning his actions, but sometimes we put "SUCCESS" in front of ethics. Can only imagine that bull unable to run and being shot so poorly by this "HUNTER" lets hope he was already gone. Best of luck to all you real hunters this elk season.

    Leupold Optics Customer Service

The new rangefinder, RX-850I, that they sent is miles ahead in the quickness of the laser reading of the target in relation to the one I sent it for repair. I was shooting objects in the neighborhood and it read 577 yards as quick as it reads 20 yards. Light weight and fits in my shirt pocket for easy access. It has all the bells and whistles anyone can want for. Me being a non tecky old guy I will only use the basics, give me the yardage and I will calculate from there, And it is great for that.
  18. Just a FYI for the gang. I had a 10 year old Leupold rangefinder that was not working correctly. I called the service dept. and they said send it in for repair. To make a long story short, they didn't repair it, they sent me a brand new one. I opened the box, not knowing it was from Leupold, and was like a kid at Christmas. I CANT SAY ENOUGH GOOD THINGS ABOUT A AMERICAN COMPANY AND THEIR LIFETIME NO QUESTIONS ASKED REPAIR OR REPLACE. Its nice to know that some companies stand by their products and customers. Leupold has a lifetime customer, and I recommend that if you need optics they should be at the top of the list
  19. This past deer season I had no Coues tag, but I did get to go hunting with my Son and his friend on the late Dec hunt. I spent a lot of time glassing over the country, and playing bird dog while the boys were on the mountain tops chasing deer. As I was cruising about I came across this record setting Coues Shed. As you can see it is in a class of its own. Got to be the smallest shed ever, really am surprised I even saw it, thought it was a twig. So can anybody hazard a score?? I'm guessing length and mass maybe equals 1 1/2. Thinking of making a necklace to hang from the rear view mirror of my hunting truck as a conversation starter.

Thanks for the info.I had heard that the Catarack Creek finger ridges was a good spot and It sounds like my type of hunting, spot and stalk. Not into road hunting with the rest of the crowd. Thanks again

    Unit #9 Rifle Tag

Just another of those "Where are all the Big Deer in this unit question". I have hunted this unit for Elk and Antelope, but never Deer. my Question is this, If it is cold and the water is frozen in the tanks in the higher elevation timber by the Grand Canyon National Park during the Deer season, which way do the deer migrate in general?? Do they winter in the Pinon flats on the west side, head over to the Upper basin, or tend to go more straight south to over by Red Butte? Not looking for anybody's "Honey Hole" just a general rule of thumb. Thanks in advance

    What's he score?

My first thought, before I looked at the other opinions, was between 76-78 and it looks like a good estimate based on the other scores. He has good mass, and would be a great trophy. Don't hesitate to Take him if you get the chance.
  24. That is one beautiful rifle. Wish I had the extra $$
