    Why I buy points

About 6 years ago I started to recognize and see the trend of point creep in Arizona. I realized very quickly I would not be able to go on quality hunts as often as I wanted in Arizona. Due to this I decided to start building points in other states. I did this in hopes to draw more tags every year and hopefully go on some Amazing hunts. I also recognized I could not afford to hunt out of state every year, but I did know I would eventually be able to do so. I figured I could afford to buy points every year with the hopes I could afford to go on these hunts in the future. The first state I purchased points in was Wyoming. Wyoming is probably one of the easiest states to buy points or apply for tags. In Wyoming you can purchase preference points from July-October. This allowed me plenty of time to afford to buy the points. In Wyoming Antelope points are $30, Deer $40 and Elk is $50. The best part of Wyoming is you can keep your preference points if you draw your second choice. 2 years after buying points I was able to draw my first Antelope tag in my second choice draw. In that same year I was able to purchase a leftover buck tag. I got 2 buck tags and I kept my points. I will be burning my 6 Antelope points this year on another great tag. In 6 years I will have gone to Wyoming 2 times and had 3 Buck tags. Amazing!!! You can actually go on a Wyoming Antelope, Deer and Elk hunt almost every year. All you have to do is a little research. Utah was my second state I started buying points in. In Utah you have to buy a $60 dollar license, but after that the points are only $10 each. After buying points for every species Utah is actually cheaper than buying points in Wyoming. I currently have enough points to draw a general deer tag in numerous units. Im still a ways off for getting a Goat or Elk tag, but eventually I will get a tag. I plan to go on a Utah Deer hunt in the next few years. My next state was Colorado. At the time I started applying you had to front the cost of the tag and License fee. That unfortunately changed this year and now all you have to do is pay of the point. This is a lot more affordable, but now a lot of extra people will be applying and therefore massive point creep will happen. In the past couple of years Ive added North Dakota and California to my list of states I have points in. Im sure some of you are thinking there is no way I can afford to go out of state ever year or buy points in that many states every year. All I can say is take it one step at a time. I LOVE to hunt! The only way Im guaranteed to go on quality hunts every year is to have the points needed to draw those tags. When I started this point collection process I was not financially able to go out of state, but I knew I would be able to one day. Thankfully that day has now come. With the points I have in Az and other states I am guaranteed to draw a great tag every year for a minimum of the next 5-10 years. Yes the tags cost more than Arizona, but after the cost of scouting do they really cost more? I personally scout a LOT for my tags. After gas and food for every scouting trip I easily have $500-$1000 invested in most of my hunts prior to the hunt even starting. Therefore going out of state in a lot of ways cost the same or slightly more or less. The other added benefit to hunting out of state is the quality of the hunts. Those of you who have hunted out of state can vouch for me on this. Most of the hunting in other states is drastically easier to find animals than Arizona. We work very, very hard for our animals. Yes we have some Amazing hunting, but we typically have to work for it. The out of state hunting I have done has always seemed so much easier than what I have to do in Arizona to become successful. I guess what Im trying to say is, start buying points now so you can eventually go on Amazing hunts! Start out with one state and add more states as you can afford it.

    WTB Pontoon boat

My neighbor is looking for an older pontoon boat he can fix up. He does not have much to spend. Just wondering if anyone has one rotting in the back yard that he can fix up. Adam

    WTB Pontoon boat

He just wants a party/put around boat. He wants a pontoon boat, because it will fit more people and his style of boating. Plus they are simpler to rebuild.

    Why I buy points

There are lots of units in Wyoming you can draw an Antelope tag with 0-2 points. Some better than others, but all will be a lot of fun! You should expect to kill a 12-14 inch goat.

Knothead, if you knew this guy's background you would be saying the same things we are saying. If he is found not guilty I will be the first to apologize, but with his history of steeling cameras and disrespectful behavior on this site I highly doubt this isn't true!

    Wyoming deadline.

BOB, I have to respectfully disagree with you in regards to the cost of out of state hunts. Yes in some cases the hunts cost significantly more, but in a lot of cases the cost is negligible when you compare the cost of scouting in state hunts. For example: If I draw an Arizona unit 10 Antelope hunt I guarantee I will scout as often as possible. I will probably scout a minimum of 5-10 trips. Scouting trips are not cheap! On average I would guess a scouting trip with gas, food and possibly a hotel can cost $150-$300 per trip. Times that by 5-10 and you have spent $500-$1000 on scouting trips alone. My Wyoming Antelope trip this year has already cost me $500 for 1 buck tag and 2 doe tags. That $500 is less than I would have spent to scout any instate hunt. The food, gas and hotel fee's are the same there as they would be here. The only additional cost is my gas there and back and my travel food. Therefore my out of state Antelope hunt will probably cost me less than a typical high end Arizona hunt. Yes, the Antelope tag is about $500 less than an Elk tag. Therefore an out of state Elk hunt could cost me about $500 more than an in state hunt. Obviously these are estimated guesses, but I'm sure my numbers are not far off. I may not scout as much for some hunts as I do others, but either way the difference in the cost far out weighs the quality of the out of state hunts. If I asked 100 people if they would be willing to spend $500 extra on their tag to be guaranteed a quality tag and have a high success chance at getting their animal I would bed a large majority would say yes! That's exactly what I'm doing. By spending a little more on a tag, gas and food I'm giving my self a much greater chance at success at hunting quality animals every year.

    Why I buy points

BOB, The tag I drew 3 years ago you can currently draw with zero points. I have several friends who draw that unit every year. For the last 3 years in a row my buddies have killed 70-75 inch bucks in that unit. I missed a buck I'm sure was over 80. My buddies have also hunted several other units with zero point draw odds with very similar size animals. I'm not sure about your opinion of quality, but in my mind hunting Antelope every year is quality. Especially if I have a chance at 70+ size bucks! ThomC, I'm definitely 100% average! I struggle for money just like most people. I definitely can't afford to go on out of state hunts every year, but I can afford to buy a few points in a few states. My goal is to have a bunch of points built up by the time I can actually afford to go out of state.

    Wyoming deadline.

There is no doubt that non-resident tags cost more than resident tags. That's just part of the deal when you decide to hunt out of state. The cost is definitely higher, but the quality of the hunting is usually higher as well. I personally have no problem paying the higher prices for either points or tags, because with going out of state I'm guaranteed to go on quality hunts every year. Unlike Az, where you may have to wait 5-10 years between quality tags. I want to go on Amazing hunts every year. The only way I can do that is to continue buying points and paying for non-resident tags. The benefits in my opinion definitely out weigh the cost!!!!
