    2018 Bugling Bulls

7E has been pretty quiet, doesn't seem to have flared up quite yet. We found a nice 6x that was solo an walked away from cow calls.

    Unit 10 Cow Elk

I will be there helping my dad hopefully harvest his first elk. We're hoping to find some secluded spots off the ranch, on public land though. We never hunted this unit or this type of cow hunt (700+ tags). Preparing ourselves for the crowds. Good luck!!!

    WTB 14ft utility trailer

Yea, I been seeing that. It can be cheaper if I buy privately to save on taxes, but I still have my eye on some new ones that I might pull the trigger on.

    trail cams...NOT FAIR CHASE

Welcome to public land hunting, like mattys said the only way to get away from crowds is to get away from roads. The 5 guys showing up at a water hole is going be solved very quickly and easily by the first guy to get there, that's if the other hunters have any ethics. Always have a plan ABC...etc

    2018 antler growth

Yea, I heard someone saying that antler growth has more to do with genes than moisture. But a drought can effect the the density/strength of the antlers, resulting in more busted up racks. Makes sense to me.

    Picked up a surrendered tag👍

Founds some cows on my scouting trip, so I at least know of an area where to start come September 14. So many roads here it's hard to get away from one without getting closer to another.
  10. I was lucky enough to be the next person in line for a surrendered 7E September 14-27 archery bull tag. I have not hunted this unit before but cannot wait to get out and scout in two weeks. This will be my first elk hunt. I will only have my pickup for the scout trip, so wondering what the roads are like? Or if any one can give me tips on hunting this unit when it comes to the varing topography. Any info is much appreciated, thank you.

Thanks for the info recurveman, do you have a picture of your bull? How long ago was your hunt?

    Picked up a surrendered tag👍

I believe you lose your points. That would make sense, just wasnt sure. Oh yeah to the original question...my buddy had 7E early archery last year and said it was the hardest elk hunt hes ever had. Trouble finding elk, much less bulls. Yes you do loose points. I'm preparing myself mentally and physically for a arduous hunt. However it goes I'm gonna have a good time.

    New shocks

Well, it's that time for me to change my front shocks on my 06 Silverado. I have a 2" level kit on it. Just wondering what you guys have used and like with a leveling kit. I'm leaning towards some Bilstein or ranchos. Hopefully can keep it under $100 for each one.

    Picked up a surrendered tag👍

Thanks Lance, yea I been reading about it been tough, with the decline in elk in the unit, gonna give it my all for two weeks if necessary.

    Mid Life/wife crisis Question

What ever you decide to do, I would definitely still keep the pop up. There may be a trip where you don't need all the amenities of a big trailer. Plus you don't have to worry so much about road conditions or camping spots big enough to accommodate a large trailer.

    Mid Life/wife crisis Question

I would say its more the upfront costs and the fixes that kill you then the maintenance. Yes oil changes are more expensive but thats not huge. I buy a new F150 eco boost max tow every two years. I put 99500 miles on them and then trade. The last one I got was $35200 off the lot. A comparable diesel woulda been just shy of $50,000. Thats almost $15,000 difference. If I trade every two years thats $7500 a year. I got ostracized on here for saying I spend $2000 a year on out of state tag applications as being a rich guy, I would say that anyone who owns a diesel spends far far more then that just to listen to it hum. Dont get me wrong there are people out there who truly need them, but I would say 99% if diesel owners dont. I pull probably 10,000 miles a year with mine. I farm part time so its anythkng from combine headers to seed wagons (15,000#) to my camper, but in my opinion I still dont pull enough to justify an extra $7500/yr in cost. If you break something on a diesel its gonna be $5-10k for literally anything in them. I see these guys talking about this motor or that and the say 6.4L is great you just have to do this delete and that bulletproofing. If Im gonna spend $50k for a pickup I better not have to take it to some aftermarket dude with a flat brim hat to spend another $10k to make it work. Thats my 2 cents on diesel!!! As my uncle (a lifetime mechanic) used to say. The three Ts of diesel: Trucks Tractors and Trains! (Dont get me started on pickup vs truck, we are referring to pickups here. Trucks have more then two axles. you need 5 gasser oil changes by the time you need 1 diesel oil change. diesels especially 4x4 hold their value better than any gas truck. f150 has the worst resale value. I change the oil every 5K on my diesel, 15qts. That is the factory recommendation, sure you can go longer but to do so you should add a bypass filter and do a UOA to see whats happening to the viscoscity, copper buildup etc. a 2014 cummins factory recommendation is 15k miles. Dang that's a loooong time. Even if that's what the factory says, I would never wait that long to change my oil in any vehicle.

Left Over Elk Tag List B.S.!!!

I know this is talking about the elk draw, but this same thing happened to my buddy during the deer draw last year. He didn't get drawn but the 1st hunt he put in for ended up on the leftovers list. He called and all the lady said is something like "oh well, I didn't get drawn either and not everyone gets drawn BS". Never really answered his question 🤔.

    COWARD

Like azlance said not all LEOs have gone through the new active shooter training. I'm curious if this deputy Peterson had. The training I went through does a pretty good job at training you too seek out the threat and engage it or distract it from killing more. But there's also a huge difference between the simunition training rounds and real rounds being fired at you. With that said all LEOs take an oath to protect and serve. I just hope that other LEOs in his situation will be able do what it takes to take out the threat asap.

    sledding

Definitely should be enough snow in the Flagstaff area for sledding now. I'm headed up to snow bowl in a few days myself. Does anyone know of a good spot to take the kids sledding around Flagstaff?
