My 13 yr old son some how drew his first elk tag, 23 late bull. We have made it up there four times to drive out the unit and check on glassing areas I e-scouted. Not looking for elk at this time from all the research I’ve been doing, “they say” the bulls will not be in the winter areas till after rut. My question is when do you guys start to see the elk in those winter ranges? Is it right after rut like mid October or more like mid November? Looking forward to figuring out this unit. It can definitely get steep and nasty.

Thanks to everyone that gave some guidance on my sons first elk hunt. Was a tough hunt for us as it never got cold enough for the elk to move down and the country is just big. Seen a few good bulls but with no way to close the distance and not wanting to shot a 1000 yrds, we did not have opportunities to shoot the first half the hunt. On Monday morning he was still hopeful of a good bull, he decide to pass on 2 rag horns and a spike that were within 400yrds. Monday night this 5x came within his range as we where glassing cuts that led to water. Cody decided he was the bull as it was only the second one he had ever glasses up. Made a great shot and we were able to find him that night. Got him skinned, guartered out and hung in a tree till the next morning. Pack out was great being the first time we were able to use our two mules on elk. Can’t wait to do it again.

He is 4 for 4. And I I’m proud of him. I know how hard it is to stay a young man that just wants to go hunting and not get involved in the numbers game. Especially around me, my friend’s. 100” is the topic when it cames to bucks, at get togethers and casual conversations. I do know how this kid does dream of a 100” deer but when I asked him what is was looking for this yr, his response “ just a 3x3 or a good 2 point”. Those words do make me happy. Here are his 4 coues bucks in four yrs Hope you all enjoy

Walking to another ridge, going to where there are no roads, Just hike in further! All great advice. I’ve hunted central units where that is just not possible. Fairly flat land for any quad or sxs, old Logging round down ever ridge(yes abandoned), Meadows that have no road down them. People just take these things anywhere, road or not is doesn’t matter. Confront them and “ they didn’t know”. Say nothing and just expect it gets old. Sabotage get tricky and dangerous. Best advice I can give is: good luck, don’t get mad, dont get even, don’t get caught. It’s tough out there and only getting tougher. Wish I had better advice but that’s all I got and how I handle it.

I had no idea winter gloves sell for up to $130. Where in the world do people get their money. A pair of thin gloves are over $20 now. Unbelievable. Anyone recommend a good pair of winter gloves that don’t cost a kidney. It will be cold this yr elk hunting in 23 with my 13 yr old. Glad I’m just the pack mule.

Had nothing to do with the mention of religion from the op. I could care less. Had to do with the response from members on the site. The Personal attacks is what triggered my response and willingness to help out.

New low of lows for this site. Send me a pm and we can talk.

^^^ Us also. Took the boy out this afternoon. He had a blast shot a box of 20 gauge shell, got 6 birds lost 4( dang weeds are high this yr) All kinda ended when a black ant decided to make it up to the jewels and take a bite out. Lol. I could not help but laugh but at the same time felt bad for the boy. He is a trooper, Still help clean out the birds hopefully better luck tomorrow but with less shots. -
Maybe but I bet u would pass on him. Might even get the old blood pumping. Great buck. I saw so crazy deer in Utah a few yrs ago on an archery hunt.

Sounds like I’m ordering the outdoorsman. Thanks for the feedback guys.

What is everyone doing for adapters on the 12x pures. Mine are shipping out this week and from what I see their are 3 options. Swarovski rubber band, sing barrel clamp and outdoors stud. Not a fan of Rubber band, heard Swarovski will not warranty after outdoorsman stud is installed and there is only about 1/8” of fine threads to tap too. Not sure about single barrel clamp.
-
Agreed. Swarovski’s bread and butter are bird watchers so tripod adapters aren’t at the top middle or even bottom of their list unfortunately. So you installed the kit yourself. Just makes me nervous, I’m an over tighter/snapper/thread stripping son of a gun. Don’t want to lose my adapter a few miles in on a hunt ( my luck). what is it torque to?

I will also pull my rear one off and you can use it.

I’ve got a front spare shock for a 2010 800 ranger if that helps. But it’s down in Tucson.
