I haven’t been out in weeks but absolutely they can be rutting now or start rutting at anytime, lot of years Christmas is right around the time some rut action becomes noticeable. Last year was not one of those years

I hate to see them make the playoff, but you gotta give it to them…. I will, however, thoroughly enjoy watching them get curbstomped in the playoff!

I stuck a GoPro on my shotgun a few years back for a few hunts. Kinda fun, but I didn’t have any use for footage like that so it ran its course. I just played with it for dove, might be cool to try again for ducks, Sandhills, or quail this year… hmm…

Also, if you don’t really want to hire a guide or go knock on doors, the big dairy farm down there has a program where you can sign up and they’ll let you hunt on their land. We haven’t done it, and not exactly sure about the details, but it’s a pretty decent opportunity to find a pretty easy spot to start

We are no experts, shot a few as first timers a few years ago just sitting public lands having no clue what we were doing. the next year we drew again, bought a few decoys and found a cool farmer that lets us set up in his field. We all shot limits. We didn’t use a blind, just hid ourselves a bit with some grass and sat still. The guide setups we saw were impressive and I’m sure they have really high success, but it’s definitely a very doable diy hunt. It’s a ton of fun, we drew tags this year after striking out a couple years

There are a handful of deer hunts that are classified “restricted muzzleloader “, looks like those extra restrictions apply. Regular muzzleloader hunts basically just no smokeless powder or scopes
