I haven't had the fortune to use a knife on a coues yet, but I carry a Buck fixed blade for separating leg joints, hip sockets and the skull from the spine on elk, bear, mulies and such. Also carry an old schrade 3 blade folder I found turkey hunting one year to do the skinning. Real easy to touch up either knife with a packable diamond steel. usually use the scapel back at camp or home to skin out the head to turn lips, eyes, ears, and nose. --Bill

Lots of us hunting 23 this year
WFGinNM replied to SunDevil's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in New Mexico
looks good Scott, I'll only be going about half way to 23 this coming weekend. My son has a youth deer hunt in 17. Hope you have a blast on your muzzloader hunt. --Bill -
Amanda, Thanks for the stickers, I'll get some pics from my hunt in a couple weeks to post. I don't know if anyone in the Jemez mountains would know what CouesWhitetail.Com means/or is, but I do so you are represented here. -Bill

Those are some great sheds, I do a bunch of shed hunting up here in north central NM and I would sure like to find a coues shed to add to my collection of elk and muley. 2 weeks... --Bill -
Doug, Hope you have a good time. Who are you going with? I'm going next year with Alaska Coastal Marine. Can't wait to see some pictures. --Bill

Younghunter, Thanks for starting this thread. I've learned more about glassing from reading this than my trial and error efforts. Now if I can only slow myself down to be able to pick out bedded bucks, I have no problem finding does, fawns, elk, bear, mulies... Just need to start spotting coues bucks. Once again thanks, --Bill

I spent Saturday glassing the north side of the San Francisco river saw a few doe with fawns, and a couple muley bucks. The bugs were unreal, and here is water everywhere. Sunday I headed up the north of Sunflower mesa and when I finally got in the sun was high so I just tried to familiarize myself with some of the roads. Went south of Mule Creek on Monday and saw better sign but no deer. Just have to decide where to start my hunt on the 4th, since I won't be able to get out scouting again. The 7 hour drive one was is a bit much for multiple scouting trips. Did see a couple bear but they were not super big. I have to leave now, more later. --Bill -
2006-2007 COUES WHITETAIL BUCK CONTEST
WFGinNM replied to Red Rabbit's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
Doug, I sent an e-mail to register, don't know if you recieved it yet. I'd like to donate something from North central NM as a prize as well. Just have to think of something appropriate. Thanks, --Bill -
I'll be heading down to 23 in a couple weeks to scout. I plan on looking around north of the San Francisco since most guys here seem to like the south. Trying not to crowd anyone. I've hunted there in the past found a few coues with no luck shooting one yet, and always ran into muley hunters. If I stay off the mesa tops will I still be able to find coues? I figure I'll drop off the edges and glass the canyon sides and lower benches. With 475 muley tags I'm sure I'll run into a few others. Maybe the other hunters will keep them away from the roads. Thanks, --Bill

I'll be hunting the first hunt in Nov. Probably will go scouting the 7th through 9th of October, on the north side of the San Fran. --Bill -
It's been around quite a bit. Check this link if it works. http://www.westernmulemagazine.com/image/w...AIN%20LION2.pdf --Bill

Scotty, I hunted Ibex about 8 years ago with muzzleloader. I would say it was probably one of my favorite hunts. I did not get one but I was being very selective, had numerous nannies and immature billies within 100 yards. I actually had more fun videoing and glassing them, the way they run through the cliffs is amazing. It was like hunting pronghorns in the cliffs. One of the major distractions we had was the number of illegals roaming around the foothills of the mountains (and our camp). I had no idea what I was doing on that hunt although I did do some scouting before the season, I was under glassed with my nikon 10X42's but it wasn't to bad one you found the Ibex. I did have one stalk which I was about 200 yards from 2 nice white billies bedded and all the sudden I heard a radio. Turns out a hunter was being guided by his guide over the radio. I just hung back and watched this guy try to walk right up to them and get busted, frustrating but life. I live in north central NM so it's quite a haul down southwest to hunt, I'll be trying again to get a tag after I go to Alaska next year ('07). My son will be 14 then and be able to make his way around the mountains then as well have to start putting him in for the youth hunts. It is an awesome hunt and I wish they were inhabiting the Tres Hermanas range still. A few folks I've talked to said there was a pretty good population awhile back but with the game managment the way is was they were wiped out, as was planned. I'm going to have to go home soon and watch the video I taped, I've got Ibex on the brain. Later, --Bill

I was wondering if anyone knows if there is a tripod adaptor available for mounting Monarch 10x40's to a tripod. Thanks, --Bill

You could start your rehab by sending me those 15X60 Zeiss Bino's. --Bill

105Coues, I've hunted the northern part a few times and have never seen any elk. I have see mulies, coues, bighorn, javies, and coatimundi. Just not any elk. The few times I was down there I had no idea how to hunt coues, I would walk and glass and probably spooked more than I saw I'm sure. I drew the first rifle hunt this year and plan on doing some more scouting and a bunch more glassing. Good luck, --Bill

To stick with the topic I would have to say some way to start a fire, and Ibuprofin. The Ibuprofin helps the knees so I can still walk, and also wards off any migraine headaches that might arise due to lack of food, sleep. Outdoor Writer, Your post described quite a few nights following my dogs here in NM. It's amazing how a dog curling up and pressing into the small of your back can warm you up. --Bill

Amanda, They are the Monarch ATB, I believe that they are roof prism (straight tubes). They do have a threaded hole in the front which is under a threaded plastic Nikon emblem. Thanks for checking with Jim for me, and thanks for your help also Sundevil and Ron G. --Bill
