SHORT Mearns hunt!
WFGinNM replied to firstcoueswas80's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
Way to go, nothing like hunting behind good dogs. --Bll -
Thanks for the kind words, it feels good to be able to add something to the site relevant to coues'. I'm afraid that after this all I can offer is some pictures of elk and elk sheds. Casey, I had thought about getting a lion tag but I've caught my share here in NM and didn't consider interrupting a perfectly good coues' hunt dealing with a big cat. Thanks, --Bill

Good to see you here. I should be getting to the east side of 36B sometime tomorrow afternoon to do a few days scouting before the hunt. Can't wait. Take Care, --Bill -

Neat pics, I think that wild predators know when to say when. They can't risk getting beat up while trying to get some groceries, and when dinner puts up a defense, shopping isn't what it is supposed to be. Food is supposed to run. Domestic canines on the other hand don't seem to have this sense of not getting hurt and when the ditch lion spins around to put up a front it usually gets plowed by about something it isn't quite ready for. Man's imposed doom..... But for what it's worth, I think grays are a bit more aggressive than reds. --Bill

Way to go Cody, good deal. The 'yotes will be safe now without that "mighty beast" chasing them around. Thanks for sharing your story with us. Congrats, --Bill

Saturday morning we headed into the area we had scouted, got behind a herd and couldn't get any interest in our calls. We followed in the direction they were moving and caught up to them when they bedded on a hillside above a dirt tank. We spent most of the day glassing this herd for a big bull my friend had seen before the hunt, but never found him. There were about a dozen 5x5s and 5x6s but little Bill wanted a shot at the big one. I will be honest, knowing how hard it can be to get into elk I was a bit frustrated that he wanted to hold off, I wanted him to fill his tag. Sunday it was raining so we had a good breakfast waiting on the weather. Went to a different area and played cat and mouse with a decent 5x5 and 4 cows. After about 4 hours during which little Bill passed on a 3x3, and finally getting within 110 yards of the group, we set up and watched as the 4 cows crossed an opening infront of us. The bull was about 3 or 4 body lengths from the opening when one of the cows must have winded us and they ran off. I was getting concerned being that we only had Monday morning to hunt since Bill had to be back at school Monday evening. That night we talked about what a good hunt it had been so far and I mentioned that a successful hunt isn't measured but the size of an animal but the time spent out, I was worried that he was more interested in a "trophy" and missing the point of the "hunt". He said "I know Dad, I have one more morning and will take the first good shot I have tomorrow. I just didn't want to end the hunt too soon". Next morning we went back to Saturdays spot and got into the same herd as Saturday. Listened to quite a bit of bugleing, and heard an elk walking in the draw below us. After some cow calling, a bull started up the other side of the draw in the open. I ranged it at 152yrds, set up my tripod for him to shoot off, and Bill shot his first bull (3 times). While we waited for it to die a couple more bulls came out of the draw and posed for pictures, and bugled. After awhile we headed over to the bull it jumped up and he shot it in the rear leg, it fell again while he reloaded and finished it with a shot through the lungs. He shot it a little far back at first, but after the hands on anatomy lesson he knows where the heart actually is now. Thanks for reading, --Bill

Cool story and hunt, congrats on the bucks. Doug, I was thinking the same thing about Carrie's buck. --Bill

hunting trip for 50th birthday
WFGinNM replied to azhunter85's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
I don't think next year will be a good year for that- two bad winters in a row. I don't believe that the south end of Kodiak gets hit as hard as the north, I went last year after the north end was buried and it was amazing. I went with Alaska Coastal Marine, both Homer and ACM hunt the south end and seem about the same as far as retaining customer loyalty. After I read Amanda's thread and saw the link I guess I shoud be happy I might not see one on the next coues hunt in 36b or are they there too. last November I hunted Kodiak Island and didn't even think about sitting or stepping on a Kodiak Brown. I'm thinking these snakes might be a problem. Don't have to worry about them too much up here in the Jemez Mts. -Bill
-
That is excellent.

I also have the late November hunt, I like seeing all these pics of deer but I also start thinkin. . . Uh-oh, there aren't going to be any coues left in AZ in a couple more days. . Hopefully all the easy culls are being taken --Bill
-
Very nice. a bunch of good deer being dropped this year so far. Congrats, --Bill

Just in case you've been dying to get into lion chasing, I've got a Washburn bred treeing walker that turned 1 yesterday, registered and everything. I'll be in 36B on the 25th. --Bill
-
Christian, That is awesome, once again thanks for including us on your hunt. Congrats to both you and your Dad on memories that'll last forever. I'll be in 36B in 2 weeks to prepare for my 1st AZ coues hunt. Your story makes me even more anxious. Congrats, --Bill
-
Congrats, I'll be happy to see a buck like that in a couple weeks, nevermind killing one (although that would be nice). Sounds like a good time. --Bill
-
Excellent, how cool for both kids to be able to share the hunt. Way to go, --Bill

Do only bucks have "units"? and why would you have a favorite? --Bill
