New Horizons in a Familiar Unit
WFGinNM replied to Red Rabbit's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
I've been waiting for this adventure story. I sure look forward and appreciate these write-ups and pictures. Doug, could you go Coues' hunting again please.... please??? Looks like you guys (and Rica) had a great time. Well done, --Bill -
I need to get something a bit sturdier for the 15's, my Manfrotto 718b is fine with my Steiner's but moves too much with the Swaro's. Carbon Fiber is not an option at the moment. What would some of the pro's and con's you folks would look for in these two set ups? 330 EZ vs. 340 EZ 62" max height vs. 56.5" 48" w/ lowered column vs. 44.5" 23.5" folded vs. 19.5" 3 leg sections vs. 4 3.66 lbs vs. 3.61 lbs. Both have the SH-707E head Would the longer folded length (4") with 3 leg sections be sturdier than the lighter (shorter) 4 leg sections? I can live with the added 1/2lb of the 330 if having less leg sections would make them sturdier. Anyone have any experience with the SLIK SH-707E head? I plan on getting a Jim White next. Thanks, --Bill

What a cool hunt. I really look forward to this time of the year reading about all the hunts and checking out peoples different styles of photography. It's interesting what pictures can be added to enhance a story and give a reader a real sense of being there. Once again congrats Amanda, Good job and Thanks, --Bill

+1 I've never been on the Stallion Range, but Rhodes Canyon I like. --Bill

I also have both .243, and 7mm mag. Both shoot better than I can, but I find myself reaching for the 7mm more often. The first time I ever hunted Coues' I missed a broadside buck at 300 yards with the .243, a shot that has sent many 'yotes to the carcass pile in the sky. I'm sure it was me but I have more confidence in the 7mm, which was given to me by a friend. He couldn't hit the ground with it and said "the barrel must be bent". As far as bullets for the 7mm, I used Federal Vital Shock 150gr. Nosler Ballistic tips for my only Coues' kill and left quite an entrance hole, but no exit would. The bullet disintegrated, and the buck went about 30 inches, straight down. For bigger game I use the Federal Vital Shock 160gr. Nosler Partitions, and critters just keep falling. --Bill

"PROTECT your hearing as best you can and you will be much happier " Absolutely!!!! After many years operating heavy equipment and being "too cool" to wear hearing protection, I have a constant annoying ringing in my ears. My hunting partner/son has opened a completely new dimension to our time in the woods. He has been deaf since he was an infant, and I am constantly reminded of what I have taken for granted and thrown away. Not to mention my patient wife puts up with me constantly saying "what", and "excuse me, I didn't catch that". I now have ear plugs in all my packs, and vehicles. Sorry to hear about your ears Mike, --Bill

Saw these bucks on the way home from work today. Time to start scouting for this coming antler picking season. Sure wish they were Coues', --Bill

Travis, That is awesome, I'm going to have to start looking more seriously at the leftover tags. Thanks for sharing your hunt with us, I love this time of the year. --Bill -
"Will I ever get a bigger buck?, Buck from Sonora" Only if you take me with you. That buck is awesome, what a perfect crown he is carrying. --Bill

Guess the Score Contest - Nov 09
WFGinNM replied to CouesWhitetail's topic in Contests and Giveaways!
I know 124" has been taken twice, and everything else has been hit in that range. So I will have to go with 123 2/8" since it's the only number open in that range. --Bill -
Bob, I can't help with your question, but 4 weeks in the Brooks Range..... Feel free to start a new thread with a story and pictures. I'm sure it would be apprecitaed by more folks than just me. --Bill
-
Congratulations Justin, What an awesome buck and the adventure you had taking him sounds like a great time. You folks in AZ have all the fun. I can see how you could tell it was a buck at 500 yards with "$20 binos". Way to get it done, --Bill

You know you're addicted to coues when.....
WFGinNM replied to Browning'sCustomMeat's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
When you don't put in for a Non-Resident AZ Coues' license so you can put that $400.00 towards some Swaro 15's. Then you spend all your extra time (like there is any) looking at posts of current Coues' hunts. Whining about not hunting in AZ this year. --Bill -
Lance, Thanks for sharing the pictures and stories, great to see all the kids getting out and smiling. Keep it up, --Bill

I thought this was a bunch of crap, right up to the part about the MJ movie, then I figured it had to be true. --Bill

Jason, G&F might have screwed up the release date "FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE, NOV. 3, 2008". the rest of the info seems correct, next Tuesday is the 10th. 505, Nice first post calling someone a "Dork". That will get you some friendly welcomes. --Bill
-
Sounds like a great time, except for the 4 wheelers. That big Coues' has some killer eye guards. --Bill
-
Congratulations on a couple gorgeous bucks. --Bill

when you live as far away from Coue's country as me you don't get to notice those fancy internet speedbumps. --Bill

I am looking for a late November cape for the buck I killed last year. I left a bit of a hole in the one he was wearing , if it was anywhere else I'd try and fix it but being right in the throat I would like to get a intact one. I'd be willing to pay or trade, if anyone can help me out I sure would appreciate it. Thanks, --Bill

Congratulations Brittany!! Great story, looks like a good place to keep a kid interested. Thanks for sharing the pictures and story. --Bill

If I was hunting meat, it sure wouldn't be for a muley buck. That's just my taste buds opinion. But to have a chance to hunt a rutting Coues'. I'd take a Coues'. --Bill

That's great, I sent you a PM. Thanks, --Bill
