I had the rifle tag in 08 and the archery tag in '10. I hunted the rifle hunt by myself, went 10 days early and scouted my butt off. No cameras, planes, or guides etc, dare I say old school.. Found one slug that got killed by a road hunter the second day, passed many solid deer in the 180-195 range and on day 5 I killed my 208" buck. After I killed him I asked around to see if anyone had a TC pic of him as I obviously didn't, no one had a pic, I did talk to a guy that helped a bow hunter and they tried to kill him one day, the only time they saw him and that guy practically lives on the strip. There are definatly deer that don't get their pic taken. The archery hunt was me and a buddy, we had two cams to check waters we weren't hunting. We hunted water near where we glassed big deer. To shorten the story, my buddy killed a 197" on day 12. He got a pic of him the night before. I ate a tag but that was only due to being way to picky. Took a bunch of pics with a real camera of the deer I passed, I look at those pics from time to time and just shake my head! If you want to wait for a strip tag then do it! Most amazing place to hunt Muleys anywhere! Don't worry about the crowds or the guides or any of that BS. if you are gonna go DIY there are plenty of guys, like myself, that will give you starting points. Go up there and do your thing, it will be the best hunt you can do! I know for me, minus my kids first kills, the rifle hunt in 08 was my biggest achievement in hunting. Mano y Mano and I got what I was after. Do it man! You won't regret it! And if you want to hunt deer most don't see and a place that I have never seen a camera on the waters then draw the tag and get a hold of me. Backpackers paradise, water is limited as with everywhere on the strip, but It would make for an awesome adventure. Good luck

You want to hunt the BO. Pm me if you want to know some good spots to check. There will probably be some guides in theses spots but that's no big deal. Just hunt em anyways. I practically lived in that unit for 10 plus years when I used to guide a lot.

One more thing. Put a holographic sight on whatever gun you get. Flat awesome for kids!

Good Tag? 7 East Peaks Hunt Area 10/21-10/27 Any Elk..

Elk schmelik... What's with the buck in your avatar? -
Get a gun that fits him and that he can handle. Go out to the desert and practice set ups shooting paper targets with 2 3/4 shells (cheaper). Try it off of shooting sticks, knees etc. as he get stronger have him swing the gun slowly to shoot targets at an agle not directly in front of him. Once he can shoot accurately to 30 or so he should be good to go. If he still struggles with movement and steadying the gun then scout a bunch and put him in a blind and call the birds to you.

Interesting article regarding the new Boquillas agreement

Just another government agency doing what government agencies do......... Whatever they want with no checks or oversight by the people they work for....... US.... guess its better to ask for forgiveness than permission.. Once the truth comes out of course. -
If you are a millennial and have a work ethic like that you are gonna go far in life! You have already out paced the vast majority of your generation. Laziest bunch of crybabies I've ever seen.

Glad I sold mine when I did for $1500. Took a week listing on here and be ready for a bunch of flakes and guys that want them for nothing. Good luck with the sale.

Sleeper for giants! You don't have to hunt the giant canyons to find em either, sometimes you can find em in the pines near said canyons.

Quality gear is quality gear. It has to work the way I need it to work and it has to be reliable. If it has a a pattern that people think is trendy so be it. Each one of the top end manufactures make some things I like (natural fiber) and some I don't (UA polyester) sorry mattys.the pattern doesn't matter at all, its the function that does. I have cheap stuff too but that stuff doesn't go on my tougher hunts. I do think it is ridiculous to rip on each other due to the brand of camo you have on. I know we are divided in this country but good god... Sometimes hunters sound like a bunch of teenage girls.

What is a skinwalker? Bugs?

Definatly a unit you can pack into some spots! But you are right about getting one out! That Would be a ball buster for sure and maybe not a hunt to start backpacking with but only you can answer that. But what if you only packed a mile in and set camp. You would only be a short hike to the truck if things got tough but you would be ahead of any hunters pushing in from the roads as most won't go a mile anyways. Of course if you scout a bull you want near a road don't look a gift horse in the mouth! Lol

Which unit?

Dec Coues in 22 With 10 Points
208muley replied to AZMThunter's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
You should draw with 10 points. Don't worry about the bow hunters, most of them are in blinds and trees sitting waiting for one to walk by their salt or bait ( guys still bait even tho it is illegal). Just draw the tag and hunt your hunt. Good luck -
Ive Done the hunt a bunch and my opinion is that there are much better jr hunts out there. Just not a lot of deer and there are private land issues in much of the better habitat. Having the adult hunts before the jr hunt kills off most of the little bucks running with does so just finding any buck can be tough.

With 18 pts I'm jealous!!! Congrats on the bird!! 33?

This time of year they are only done gobbling in between gobbles. Late season is sometimes tough to find a Tom that wants to play but once you do he usually goes for a walk over your shoulder shortly after. I was thinking about the OTC archery hunt next wknd but it looks like it gonna rain, snow and blow.... Hope it changes....

Is this the magnesium body?

My advice is waaaaaaaaaaay less calling, and never ever ever ever from a truck, and more sneekee! Big bulls typically don't get killed coming to calls, it happens but not nearly as much as tv and call makers would have you believe. Find water or wallows and try to slip in on them when they are on their feet.
