I'm a gear junkie for backpack hunting so I like the write up. I've thought about the super tarp but the conditions I hunt in,high desert or lower, I need a shelter with a floor to keep the creepy crawlys and flying bugs out! Now as far as packs are concerned, the one you have is the one I'm looking at getting. Will it compress for day use once camp is set, and not be a pain to get things in and out of? Does it have a place for a 3litter bladder that is high in the pack? Ive been using Eddie Bauer guide pants, $65 or so, and love them. They are a bit stretchy and articulated where it counts. Made for warmer weather but if it gets below 20 a thin merino base from FL and I'm good to go. Delorme Inreach is a good product as well. Not proficient with it yet but good enough to get a MSG out to family once in a while.

I hate, no love, mmmmmm hate, nope, love mine. It kicks your arse! Put a weighted pack on and it will destroy you. It's a great tool as well as diet and weights.

Dog Training
208muley replied to davidkucharik's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
If he won't retrieve, go to a hallway in the house and close all the doors so there is only one way to go which is where you are. Throw a bumper to the end of the hall then let him pick it up, call him with nothing more than his name and (here, back, to me etc) Even if it takes him 10 minutes to get there give him a "drop" command and take it from him. Then and only then love on him like crazy, no food, then do it again and again and you get the picture...... Keep commands with all training very basic and simple and consistent. Lots of talking will confuse the dog, one word commands only. Have fun and don't let him see you stress, be stone cold and calm the entire time until he does something right then love him like crazy. Teach the whole family to use the same exact commands you are or they will really confuse the heck out of him.kids are the worst just they want to play chase and tug of war and all kinds of things. Try to resist any of that with your training aids. I could go on and on but get the book, read the whole thing first To understand the progression then go have fun. -
Dog Training

Get the book " water dog". Training gold! Worked for my dogs. I had a gun shy and water shy dog. I got him used to guns by having someone shoot a shotgun 200 yards away and I played with the dog on a lead. Then I would work closer and do very short throws with a bumper. Keep working closer and closer, if he gets a little weird then take a break. Pick up wher you left off and make sure the gun is fired 180 from the way you are approaching, and keep getting closer. Once you get 30-40 yards away have the gun shot follow you throwing the bird in the air a bunch of times (still aiming 180 away) and pretty soon he will put the two together that a gunshot brings the fun retrieve and that's it. Water shy. Go to a river creek etc and have him retrieve in a shallow clear spot so he can see the ground. Gradually work deeper. Once he has to swim if he balks get ready to swim with him. I drug my dog till he had to swim than swam with him to the bumper . Once he got it someone on the bank called him back. Unorthodox I know, but it worked like a charm! Could never get him out of the water from then on. Some dogs don't think they can swim but once they know they can they never stop. Awesome looking dogs guys! -

Seeing some great bucks in there this year. Hunt where the monsoon rain fell!! Wher it didn't horn growth and deer numbers are terrible. But where it fell pretty good.....oh my!

Struggling in unit 10, question on elk behavior

If your seeing lots of donkeys then get away from paradise ridge! Typically that is a bull hangout. Near that area i would check the flats around ash fork. Or east towards perrins ranch. -

A buddy just bought this gun and wants to know what is a good factory ammo for it. I'm no help as I don't have a 7. He is not a reloader.
-
Thanks for all the suggestions fellas. I will let him know about those. I gave him some old crap I had laying around and it shot them at about 1.5 moa. So with good ammo I'm sure it will improve a lot. Thanks again!

Carrying a rifle during Youth Hunt
208muley replied to Viper's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
There are a bunch of laws azgfd put out there to be intentionally "grey" left to the wm to make the call. They definatly don't operate like a normal LEO. -
A buddy of mine got a tag just a few weeks ago for deer. He was told he was next in line. They didn't tell him how the tag became available and I don't think he cared one bit.

There are some very nice bucks in 5a. Just gotta know where to look. Start in the areas that have already been mentioned. Canyons canyons canyons...

Used to be, and still is a cool unit, the access sucks. I used to get access thru some of the ranches by knocking on doors and offer to clean up the trash on the two tracks and anything else they needed. Now I feel like you would see a gun barrel pointed at you before you ever got to the door! Sad deal for hunters!

Sportsmans warehouse on I17 has one on the shelf. I have one in .280 ai and love it.

Honestly there are whiteys everywhere in the unit in all habitat types. I've seen em from saguaro lake all the way to the rim and everywhere in between. The best place to hunt is where you find a buck you like, but If you can get away from the crowds it's a more enjoyable hunt. With that said, you don't have to go way back in to find great bucks! Some great bucks get killed very close to the beeline, 87, 260, 188. Just ask my dad! Good luck

Great looking buck mike!!

Bass pro sucks.... Had a $50 gift cert there and it took me 3trips to find something I wanted. Cabelas does have some overpriced stuff that I want occasionally. Sportsmans warehouse, rei, and online for 90% of the stuff I buy.

WHAT UNIT!!!!!!!!??????????

I'm a fan of the cards (steelers first tho). Problems I see that are concerning; special teams, need better coverage and tackling. play calling and quarterback decisions, why the heck does Carson throw a floater to 5'9" John brown in the corner of the end zone who is covered by a 6'3" CB on the inside, obvious pick! 1st and goal on the 8 and you don't let DJ who is averaging 5 yds a carry run the dang ball!!!!! Defense secondary, they are a blitz and man coverage defense, don't try and play a modified zone! They seemed lost and had more holes than Swiss cheese which got exploited by a mediocre at best offense x2. Plenty of blame to go around and it starts at the coach and goes from there. They are a highly talented team that I think believed the hype about themselves. They may be talented but not a good team right now. I have faith that they will correct the issues and get back to the team we all expect them to be. Go red birds!!!!!!
-
I will second that. A buddy used one last year after calling AZGFD to verify.
-
Awesome trip!!! Congrats! How many can you take? Did you have bear issues?
-
As long as it doesn't get real hot let it burn! Especially the parts that are so thick a rabbit struggles to get thru it!!!

I will be there supporting my buddies wife, who I helped last year on her hunt. It will be cool to see a bunch of the rams that we're killed last year!
