So how many of you have deer hunts starting tomorrow? Just wanted to wish all of you lucky dogs good luck. Opening day of rifle deer has always been a special day.

I hate to say it, but that area could use another good fire. It is severely overgrown. A friend was talking to a rancher in the area a couple of years ago and the rancher said the last fire that went through 5 or 6 years back had an amazing effect on springs in the area. The rancher said springs that had been dry for 30-40 years or more started to have water again after the fire. Now is a great time of year for a good slow burn.

I would have quit hunting years ago if I only measured my success by whether or not I killed something.

Although I have not used him because I can't seem kill anything, my hunting partner has been happy using Karls custom meats in camp verde. He has taken two elk and a couple deer to him. For those with tags this year, I recommend getting your meat cutter located before you head out. Good Luck Address: 3691 W Cherry Creek Rd, Camp Verde, AZ 86322 Hours: Closed ⋅ Opens 8 AM Wed Phone: (928) 567-8659

Was out there last Sunday. There were about 60-70 elk on south end closer to store and about 25-35 on north end. Still lots of water.

Be happy for these times of high temps. It's the only thing keeping millions more people from moving to our once great state. As a native, I will take extreme heat any day over the extreme cold.

If you want to camp or hunt with females you might as well plan on buying a trailer otherwise they aren't coming. I have a tent. Some wise man needs to write a book about woman. Should be titled "Before and After Marriage". Give it to every young man for their 18th B-day. -
I agree, very nice mount. The eyes are exceptional.

The murder was not on the k4 ranch it was directly west of K4 about 2 miles. It was a ranch hand that murdered somebody at the big house just past the ranger station along walnut creek. I think it was the owner of the house that was murdered.

Most of those trees were cut back in the 70's but yes, doesn't seem right. I imagine they sell it to the powers that be, by cutting trees more water goes into the aquifer. The checker boarding of land almost always seem to work for the landowner and rarely the public. Many years ago, my dad trained horses and new the old man Kiekefer. All the way back in the late 70's I can remember my dad telling me he was a shrewd businessman.

This looks a lot like my family. My wife is Mexican and has 8 siblings. Her brother used to always call me the colored guy of the family. Like everything, there is good and bad in ALL people. -
I was up north a couple weeks ago put'n around and I was amazed how little water were in most of the tanks. After this past winter's moisture, I thought they would hold water longer than they have. A couple were already mudholes. The week before the 4th of July weekend I was camped along east fork of black river. Hardly a cloud in the sky the entire time we were there. Normally, by then we are getting a few afternoon showers. I am hoping this is just going to be a late monsoon and not a nearly non-existent monsoon. By the way, the howling of wolves woke us up every morning. First time I have ever heard them, and I was surprised how long they would carry on, which was 15-20 minutes straight. I have seen them before but never heard them.

Make work fire?

You might get more help if you got rid of that big A in your avatar. Just say'n. jk

Be careful what you wish for because you just may get it. It may help some odds, but you will not be able to hunt at all if not drawn. At least with the way it is set up now you can go hunt OTC if not drawn.

As already said, you need to go to a bow shop, and they can help you. Once you find your correct draw length, reach out and see if anyone has a newer (5 years or less) bow they want to sell with the same draw length. I have been shooting a bow since 1978 and I always tell everyone to bargain hunt for their first bow because you never know if you will stick with it. If you like it and want to continue, then shop for better stuff. Bows depreciate faster than a new car, so it is possible to get fairly new equipment at a real bargain. Just like a new golfer, I would recommend paying for a couple private lessons too. This cuts the learning curve way down and prevents you from developing any bad habits. check out Bowsite.com classifieds. Good Luck and welcome to the brotherhood!

Here's my stab at starting a conspiracy: Maybe the reason they don't go to an outside already established vendor like kalkomey, is then they can't manipulate the data? If everyone that applied for AZ draw on an outside vendors platform, then G&F have less or no control at all over the data. Hmmmmm ever think of that? -
If you are an archer, this is not a good sign for the future of bowhunting in AZ. Pretty sad, really.

What answers do I have? My question is for the July ABA Bowhunter Happening shoot. 3 1/2 weeks away and their website has old information. Is there or is there not going to be a shoot? That is my question for which I do not have an answer.
-
I would guess this is their standard "tow the line" response. The few people who still get a hit, will be from some poor souls rejected card. So yes, technically the draw is still going on, but not really.
-
Last weekend's shoot was put on by a private for-profit club. The July Bowhunter Happening is put on by the not-for-profit Arizona Bowhunters Association. Historically, this was one of the best shoots in the western USA. The ABA also advocates for bowhunters. Or at least they use to. Don't hear much from them anymore.

Yes it is. I predict once G&F gets 3-5 years of archery OTC quota data, they will have the bullets to make all the archery hunts a draw. I know some guys want to go to all draw but I think the quota system is the best of all the evils. Times are a chang'n.

A little Arizona nostalgia. There was once a time that you could go down the G&F headquarters on Greenway Road / I-17 and watch them manually draw applications from a barrel. I never did it but when I was in HS my boss and his brother would go down and watch. This would have been around 1978-79.
