    12AW or 12BW ?

You said you had 10 points but never said how many points your dad had. I'm assuming he had 0-2 points because you should have drawn the early hunt if he had 3 or more points? Sorry to hear the bad news and I hope you and your father draw the tags you want next year. The Kaibab is a special place for sure and like someone mentioned already, everyone should experience it at least once in their lifetime.

Best way to meet hunting bros

Finding a good hunting partner can be harder than finding a good wife. I have good friends that hunt that I will not even hunt with for one reason or another. So many things go into a good partner. such as: Help around camp, share costs, keep mouth shut about hunting spots, don't invite outsiders without approval, help in animal recovery, hunting ethics, hunting methods, drinker/non-drinker, I could go on and on. I have found that sometimes it is just easier and better to hunt solo. In my job, I am around people constantly and they are always asking questions. The time alone is pretty special to me. Funny thing about my best hunting partners, we almost always hunt solo but we share a camp and all the other stuff. Very rarely do we actually walk and hunt together. Good luck in your pursuit.

    White Bambino

Always cool to animals like this. In the 90's I used to see an albino buck and two does in unit 20A. Even seen an albino turkey in unit 27.

CWT First "Card Hit" Contest for Raffle Tickets

I wonder how accurate their status bar is? I purchased something on amazon 11 days ago then two days later a get a notice that it has shipped. When a check the status it has not moved in 9 days. It still looks like it is 2/3rds the way to me. I wonder how long the G&F status bar will be at 20%? Sorry to be the one who brings rain clouds & ants to the picnic but G&F draw system has let me down too many times. Thanks for doing this Ross. Good luck to everyone in the fall draw.

    Sunrise Archery Shoot

We are heading up Wednesday morning. Since we are doing some fishing and shooting we plan on camping between Big Lake and Sunrise. Last year we shot first thing Friday morning then went looking for a place to camp around 5:00 pm. Lots of people but there were camp spots available. I believe the campground we stayed at was Wynn and it is a mile or so on the left after you cross sheeps crossing stream. This year we are going to camp on North side of road after the horse camp (Gabaldon)turn off as this will be dispersed camping. We are really looking forward to shooting Thursday and Friday before the big crowds come. Good Luck
  9. Taking my first ever trip to Black river crossing for small mouth in a couple weeks. After looking at all my gear, I have determined that I am pretty much a trout fisherman and don't have a clue as to what will work for smallies. If anyone can tell me what they have had luck with including size and color I would appreciate it. What pound test should I use as well? I have wanted to do this trip for nearly 30 years and I'm finally doing it. Thanks

    7E Scout Trip

The year I had a tag there was a mountain bike race on the back side of mountain. They started on the west side of unit and finished on east side. Not sure if they still have it but it definitely affected the elk and the hunters. That being said, I ended up being successful but it was one of the tougher hunts I had ever been on. I ended up finding a secluded water hole and elk would come in the last 10 minutes of shooting light each day. Lots of deer and big black flies that bit like heck. Good Hunting

Just curious, is this fire on public, private or reservation land?

    Teachers enjoy!

Thank you. I would gladly trade my 8 weeks off in the summer for 2 weeks in September. Teaching is not a hunter friendly occupation.

    Card Hit - 2016 style

I saw the same story on AZ Central and I was dumbfounded. I thought we had better controls and security methods in place that prevents this from happening. The good news is that I also read a different article where men were taking up scrap booking in their free time. It was something they were very passionate about. Many of them said they were former hunters who found it less stressful, now that they had an outlet and no longer had to wait on AZGF & draw results.

Will I have any friends ?

You have a friend here. I grew up so close to ASU that I could hear the announcer during the Saturday night games. As an ASU grad I could never even imagine going down to the "Dirty T" but all my kids are Wildcats. One graduated 2 years ago, currently have a junior and a freshman down their. In a year and a half my last one is most likely going to end up down there. The only complaint I have is that my closet has more UofA stuff than ASU stuff. What doesn't kill ya only makes you stronger. Go Devils!

    San Carlos in THREE weeks!

Hey Don, I might see you up there on that early hunt. I am fortunate to have a tag this year and I had the early hunt last year. I felt it was too early for the birds last year as they were only talking on the roost and the first few minutes once they hit the ground. Went home empty handed but I learned a lot and even a few new places to go. If you see a 2011 gold Dodge 1500 crew license says HNT4LIF, stop and tell me where all the birds are. Good Luck!

    Card Hit

I predict Saturday morning 7:01 the first charges begin to show up and Tuesday next week at the latest. Some card(Cabelas Visa) transactions do not appear as soon as others but if you have no charges within the 72 hours of the initial report of a credit charge, I doubt you got drawn for anything. You can call your financial institution and ask if you have any pending charges. I wish you all a Very Merry Christmas. Happy Hunting!

    AZGFD online draw poll

I didn't have a problem this year but it is still cumbersome in my opinion. Very redundant compared to other states. I give it a B for this year. Also when comparing to other states that I have used, I give AZ and F based on ease of use and past history of technical problems. We should have never dropped the company from Nevada that used to do it 10 or 12 years ago.

First signs of doe interest down south in 35A

I hunted Saturday to Wednesday and witnessed one 70" buck chasing a doe Monday evening. He had his head down, twitching his tail and chasing her pretty aggressively but she wanted nothing to do with him. Also saw a little forky rubbing horns and doing the lip curl with head up thing. Other than that, every buck I saw was alone and does were just hanging out with their young ones. Heading back down tomorrow morning and will stay till Monday night. Good Hunting & Merry Christmas
  19. Yes, I did receive a Turkey BP. I now have 4 points. I would just like a real explanation of how this happened.
  20. I applied for a late spring turkey hunt that I should have easily drawn with 3 points. Mind you, I put the same hunt number as my 1st and 2nd choice and I still have my receipt verifying my application and it has the correct hunt numbers. Success rate has always been 100% for people who apply with 3 or more points. I really don't expect to get a tag or anything I just want an explanation how this could happen. I called and talk to someone in the draw dept and she couldn't explain so they transferred to be to some sort of data analyst and you could tell they didn't want to be bothered today. I'm guessing she would have rather been shopping because all the did was nothing and her best explanation a lot of NR's applied and changed the odds of drawing. I explained to here that all the NR's and residents are in the same pool and that it had no bearing on my question. Besides, how many NR's do you know that apply for a late spring turkey tag? Finally after her admitting she had no idea why I did not draw she said she would pass my name and number on to Amber Munig. Poor Amber, the people under her do not understand the draw and how it works so they have to pass everything on to her. This is the 3rd time they couldn't explain something to me and eventually transfer my question to her. I used to be a computer programmer for a large saving and loan company in Dallas, TX. When I was hired right out of college the first thing they did was have me sign up for some night classes on banking and financial institutions. They thought it was important for ALL their employees to understand the ins and out of the business that provided their living. It would make them a better employee. I'm guessing many of the people that work at G&F don't really understand what they are doing and how the draw really works.

You ever see rutting in November?

When I first started bow hunting in the late 70's archery deer would open the day after thanksgiving. We would hunt just about every weekend from that point on and the deer always seemed to be herded up with big bucks chasing does around. We mostly hunted 17a, 17B and unit 10. We sure had a lot fun chasing them even though we never got one. We were young and dumb but having the time of our livesand I've been hooked ever since. Over the last 15-20 years seems like I don't see much rutting activity until after Christmas where I hunt

    AZ Unit 33 Late

Would like to hear the details and any info he would like to share. I drew the 33 late hunt this year and plan on scouting the 3 weekends prior to my hunt. Never stepped foot in the unit but I am really looking forward to seeing new country and the new challenge. I have been shooting the 25-06 quite a bit and feel pretty comfortable out to about 400 yards. Conditions would have to be just right for me to shoot much further.

2015 deer season may the games begin

Man I love this time of year and opening day. Brings back some great memories I hope I never forget. Unfortunately, my hunt isn't until later in the year. I still may head up to my old stomping grounds in 17a this weekend. I do get to take my nephew on his first ever deer hunt next month. Lucky turd has a late 12a west tag. Good luck to everyone headed out this weekend.

Surrender your tag. Here's your chance

In the proposed amendments to article's I & III you can read about the intent of the members club. I believe it is in pages 8-10, G&F clearly defines the members club proposal as method to raise funds for the department. When they get virtually no funding from the state's general fund coffers they need to think out of the box. I understand they have expenses and those expenses increase all the time. However, so do ours. Everyone raises fees and costs but my ability to pay them has not increased. In fact, I make substantially less today than I did 8 years ago. I wish the department would make cuts in their budgets like we have all been forced to do over the last few years. Start letting people go through attrition unless it is a vital position. The Department admin offices appear to be growing all the time but I see very few "boots on the ground" folks. I know this is speculation on my part but they used the run the department out of the Greenway offices and by their own admission, the number of hunters and fishermen is declining. The departments non-game branch has grown by leaps and bounds over last 15-20 years yet they bring in no funds. Stop getting bigger because it is not sustainable and it is totally dependent upon raising costs for their customers, the hunters and fishers. Because of this, and mere principle I am against the members club idea. I was also at the G&F meetings when this was discussed and I did not hear one person say they supported the idea of a members club. I will admit, the idea of joining a membership club to reinstate your BP's was never proposed or even discussed at the meeting I attended. They were just floating around some ideas that really had no value because all the information was already on the portal and it was free so why would anyone pay to join was the consensus from the audience. This recommendation now, is a totally new idea. However, I do support the idea of surrendering a tag ONCE per genus over a lifetime and get your bonus points reinstated. I personally have made a mistake on an application and lost 7 or 8 points on a hunt that could have easily been drawn with 2. My sister tore her ligaments in her knee just before her 5B rifle antelope hunt and was unable to go so I know first hand that "life happens" and we should not be punished for it. Better write the department to let them know your thoughts & concerns. Page 2 has Amber Munig's contact info and email addresses to write to. Good Luck
