I drew a deer tag yesterday, just waiting for my 5th choice sheep to hit my account…definitely something up. I kind of figured when I drew my elk tag this year at 430 in the afternoon (which has never happened on any of my tags) that we would be in for some sort of fiasco this draw cycle.

I’d say about 90% of the mature mule deer I’ve harvested or helped harvest in a general hunt desert unit have been in the flats. With the other 10% being in smaller rolling hills type country. I usually hunt them where they are whenever I scout them… there’s times I never see them again, and times they don’t move far at all from certain areas. Mule deer in the desert are very hit and miss from what I see. And just when you think you have them figured out they could be miles away the next minute. I’d start in the flats and work my way up personally. The week leading up to your hunt will probably be the most important scouting time and hopefully no hunts before yours to stir things up before you can get out there. Best of luck!

2001 and 36a for myself. It was a forky and I was instantly hooked on mule deer. The following year same tag I bagged my first 4 point and that’s when the obsession of trying to shoot the most mature buck I can find kicked in. Remember it just like it was yesterday. Great topic and awesome pics. Nothing beats the older photos in my eyes

I missed a 175”+ buck yesterday. Snuck into 60 yards of him and all his does bedded. Something spooked them and they ran closer to me. I had ranged a few things previously and when he stepped out I shot for 40. He was 36 and my arrow went just over his back. I dragged my feet and bow all the way back to the glassing knob.

We have seen 18 bucks I believe in the past 3 days. Out of those bucks only 2 were non shooters. A couple of them were absolute studs. North of the 180” mark. 4 of them were all after one doe the other day fighting and posturing for her company. Day to day it just keeps getting better. And here I am stuck at work waiting for the clock to strike 2 so I can get back out there

I have a just one I have been thinking of getting rid of for a bit. PM me and we can discuss

It’s definitely been a grind. My dad had the same tag as trphyhntr and I glassed up these two bucks yesterday and he decided the 3 point was good enough for his tag.

Teamwork and spotting/guiding a shooter in on a buck
Tj_G91 replied to LonePineOutdoors_AZ's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
It's something that only gets better with time. I find it leaps and bounds easier to guess the distance when guiding in from any direction aside from straight on. I always pick a landmark also and try to find something out of the norm or that sticks out more than the rest to get them close. Having the same spotter/partner makes it a lot easier also. Because you both get in tune with one another and that just makes the stalk easier going in my opinion. -
The rut has been slow going for the most part in those and surrounding units. It will get better and better. I would keep going back and checking those does you have been seeing, because a big buck will show up soon. the past few days in 37 have been better each day. seeing anywhere from 3-5 bucks in the 150-160 range per day. No absolute giants yet

A spotter has a spot in my pack always and although I use it mainly to judge animal size or take videos, It is also nice to be able to see an animal way out there and confirm if its a buck or doe. During times when people I hunt with don't care about size or right now in December when a majority of the guys I tag along with are just looking for anything legal with a bow, it comes in handy as well.

He is just giving you a heads up. These bows go for $375-410 used on archery talk all day long.

Congrats again brotha. Happy for you and glad we got to get out together while you were back in AZ. January is near!
