First of all a big thank you to all the veterans out there. I took my kids out scouting last Tuesday for the youth hunt that's coming up and I was absolutely amazed at how many campsites we saw between Peppersauce and the San Man junction. It seemed like every pullout had multiple vehicles and camps set up. Is this pretty much normal? Haven't hunted 33 before and I'm a little worried that hunting pressure has really taken its toll. Is there a general rule of thumb as far as deer moving higher or lower when they are pressured ?? Do they stay put and lay low ?? Also wiuld love to hear from hunters who were out there about what they were seeing. As always thanks for any replies. Jim

Unit 33 youth hunt general advise on finding deer
no worries posted a topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
Hi everyone. My 10 and 12 year old were drawn for any antlered deer unit 33 in late November. I'm really looking forward to taking them out. We are more focused on coues but wont pass on a muley. I hunted years ago ,but in 34B mainly and am a little rusty and behind on gear and technique. First ? Glassing, what direction is best in am and pm? Since the Catalinas are steep, a lot of areas have shady slopes either longer in am or earlier pm. Does this change your glassing pattern? How do u pick a glassing spot? How long do u stay put if you're not seeing deer before u move to another spot? We have good access to Pusch Ridge area thru a friends property (La Reserve) but it climbs quickly once u go the 1/4 mile from houses. Any thoughts on hunting in there? We are also looking at San Man. area , base camping and hiking in each day. Thoughts?? Suggestions?? Thanks Jim -

If you are in Tucson area sometime, I have a 7-08 Remington 700 that you could put a few rounds thru. I have the same rifle in 243 as well. You're welcome to shoot either one. -
Unit 33 youth hunt general advise on finding deer
no worries replied to no worries's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
Seriously? Camel in the barn?? I shouldn't laugh since one of my neighbors owns a zebra. Anyway , thanks for the suggestions everyone. I should be able to scout this weekend and hopefully find some promising spots. I'll start on the west side of Catalinas and a few spots over toward San Man. The kids have school during half the hunt and we might have 3 days of after school only sessions. These days, we need to hunt close to Oro Valley. The first weekend is open to anywhere. Thx again , Jim -

Anyone hunt 36B and willing to share knowledge
no worries posted a topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
OK. My 11 year old has a youth any antlered deer tag for the Nov 22-28 hunt in 36B. We hunted javelina there in Feb. and spotted deer several days. Now that the deer have been hunted, I'm worried that they will be super scarce. I've been out of hunting for 20 plus years but would love to at least put him in range of a buck. Anyone with experience in that area and willing to share would be greatly appreciated. We don't mind a long hike and with a youth hunter it's probably better to be away from others. A co-worker is letting us stay at their mobile so we will be based off of Universal Rd close to Arivaca. Thanks Jim -

Thanks for sharing your knowledge . We are looking forward to a nice long weekend of hunting, hanging out together and are hoping he fills a tag. The last time I hunted deer down there was in the mid 80s, I saw a pair of mountain lions pass within 50 yards, really cool to see them. I can't remember the access point to that spot, I drove in from Sasabe and turned South between some white pillars with pine trees in or near them. Drove past some corrals and ended up at a stock pond. Does that sound familiar to anyone?
