Why do we hunt Coues?
crazy4COUES replied to Red Rabbit's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
I would have to say ALL of the above. They part that stands out the most in my mind is the challenge, combo of intelligence/athleticism. It's amazing how beautifull they are as well. It is a blessing to live in the heart of coues country! -
Is it too early to start checking for scrapes?

Ed, Matt McPherson have been trying to find the best avenue to market a two cam bow for awhile. I hope they do step outside of thier own motto. It will show some BALLS to market a faster two cam bow than any others AND go against the keyword that has made them millions.

I know one guy who uses rotties for elk sheds, asked him how he did it. His reply was, lots of time in the field and every time they pick a shed they get a T-bone for dinner.

Up or down hill shots will need to be compensated for vs. a flat shot. Most range finders do not compensate for degree of angle. So you will need to aim low on either shot. As mentioned before, your rifle zero and bullet trajectory will all be factors.

Don't sacrifice your bullet seating depth to achive a longer COAL. It will affect you neck tension and pressures. My understanding is you need to be somewhere near the bullet diameter, caliber, with your seating depth. Example .243, 6mm cartridge will need .243" of bullet seating depth. So if you have a longer case you will be able to achive a longer COAL while maintaining the necessary seating depth.

Thanks to all, I don't have alot of experience with bullets to compare with. This is the best bullet I have shot thus far. It left a tiny entry hole, exit hole about the size of a raquet ball. When he got shot he hunched up and bucked a few yards, then he just fell over. At the range I was getting 3" grooups @ 400 yds. They did the job for me, I will use them again next time.

Nice finds...looks like O.G. CWT.com there. Them natives were sharin' coues pics way back in the day. LOL, COOL stuff!

on hwy 191 it is crowded, if you are not carefull you will run into the road hunters, literally. As mentioned before, tighten those boot laces and stretch the legs. There is lots of country to be had.

DITTO, Most areas I hunt are around the 6000 ft elevation range. Not many roads, but lots of trails. I have yet to harvest a 27 buck, when I do I will be proud.

A few more elk scouting pics

Believe it or not, The T-Rex bull in the white mtns you are referring to is a DIFFERENT bull than the T-Rex Gino is talking about. The T-Rex bull from the white mtns was killed out of Scotts Reservoir on the last day of the hunt. He was wounded by some idiot a few days before and was rut crazed and wounded swimming around in the lake when some fisherman spotted him. they called someone they knew with a tag and he came and shot him from the boat....Took 5 arrows I heard. The bull is at majestics taxidermy, about a half mile from the lake.... This is the same bull that had the HUGE shed posted last spring with the guy holding it. Everyone said it would go 400 easy,Remember??? One problem is the bull has a real small side and doesnt match the big side...Its still a nice bull...dont know what it scores... As far as the lake and such, i imagine that whats being investigated... This is all hearsay, Just what i heard second hand.....LOL Ron Ok, that goes along with the second hand info I've heard...I do remember a big shed from that area, the one Jay was holding? Lots of good bulls this year, GOOD LUCK to those who have the late tags. -

I have heard that a bull called t-rex is DOWN! In fact the story is quite interesting....supposedly it is being investigated. Don't know if it is the same exact bull, anyone with details? -
My understanding is that you want hydraulic shock to be absorbed by the animals vitals, inside the chest cavity. When a bullet passes through the animal is that not wasting the bullets kenetic energy the animals vitals are supposedto be shocked by? The "perfect bullet" will enter penetrate, expand, and stop on the opposite side under the hide. That delivers 100% of the energy to the animals vitals. You want the insides to be mush more than a nice exit hole don't you?

How bout a bull taken in 27 that scored 430+?? I keep hearing these rumors, anyone have the scoop?
-
It was short lived but we heard a few bulls getting thier bugles in tune last night....won't be long.

Leaving deer attractant out
crazy4COUES replied to greekassassin's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
only if your intent is to get a picture of a bear...If your intent is not for bear and you happen to have a picture of a bear...what makes you guilty? You cannot control the bear nor his instinct to browse. Also if you have a substance/salt out and the bear gets shot on a trail away from the salt was his intent to be baited? Or was he just passing by? The only way to tell is to allow him to go to the bait. -

Just had a thought of a trail camera photo contest, what do you all think?
-
If it is 30 yds in a straight horizontal line from your tree you should shoot for 30, you may actually be 35 yds from your position to the deer at an angle. If you are 30 yds from the deer at an angle the deer is probably 26-27 yds. from you in a straight horizontal plane. There are a few programs out there that help explain the physics of it all. On target and archers advantage are two I am familiar with. Hope that helps. Also as stated above, practice shooting at downward angles, it is alot different than one might think. don't just drop your arm, you need to pivot at the hips. Keep your shoulders in the same plane as your arms. GOOD LUCK.
