Big Browns - I went thru most of Kip's hides he dumped on me when he left. Almost all of them were a green soupy mess, it appears his freezer had gone out at some point. I have an apprentice that went thru them one by one to see if anything was salvageable. That is why they were dumped as they were garbage. I do have a life size bear and the owner has been contacted by myself. Kip moved to the salt lake city area and now works for a new taxidermist up there. I believe it is called Antler Addiction? You can call around and find out where he is if you are missing anything. He has gone belly up twice now with peoples mounts and money. This makes 6 taxidermists this past year that have gone belly up in Phoenix alone.

proposed ban on salt and feed
couestaxi replied to gotcoues's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Hey all - I've read thru these posts and letters. I agree with a good part of it. One topic I see missed is Chronic Wasting Disease. There is some data that shows CWD may be spread thru saliva via bait stations/salt. If and when CWD gets here this could be devastating to our deer herds. It may be a pro-active measure to ban the use of such items. Based on experience, once coues deer get used to corn they really hit it hard. I have watched deer hit the feeder within minutes of the timer and have it down pat. On the flip side, deer not used to it consider corn a foreign substance and avoid it at first. Not sure what the answer is or at what cost it would be acceptable. -
Gary - n - Larry Good job! Glad to see Gary get another nice buck. What a stud! We struck out this weekend Greg

Rosemont Mine
couestaxi replied to SilentButDeadly's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
The permitting for that mine was done back in the late 80's early 90's. I was told it was confidential back then. Surprised it took this long to come out. Mines are supposed to be reclaimed by law but they rarely are as it costs too much to shut them down for good. "If it can't be grown it must be mined". I know its a beautiful area but we do need copper and other natural resources to survive. Rough call but its what Arizona was built on. -
My NM burros buck 91 1/8th inches

Mike - That is an awesome buck! Great job! I don't know very many folks that go from bow to rifle......thats bass akwards, cool. Congrats again Greg -
stalkincoues -tell your buddy congrats on his turkey! I have some bad news though. As a general rule, fall turkeys are not mountable. The reason being is they are molting for the winter. Most turkeys are in mid molt during the fall hunting season. They completely change over their feathers for new ones to survive the winter. The quickest way to tell is to look at the bases of the feathers. If you see a dark purple/blue base to the feathers these are new feathers or blood feathers which are actually growing. Many will fall out during the washing process leaving a really ratty looking bird. Depending on the growth stage of the feathers you may be able to save the tail if these feathers are fully developed. Of course there are always exceptions to the rule but this is rare on fall birds. One important question to ask is if the taxidermist you choose does his own birds or does he/she wholesale them out? If so they may take in the bird for work but not be aware of the potential issues. Congrats again and good luck in life!

Magnus Stinger 85 grain http://www.magnusbroadheads.com/stingers.html Cut on impact blade, these are aligned with the shaft so they fly great out of virtually any tuned bow. Will do the job when it gets there! I use them exclusively on anything from javelina to Kudu.

UPS lost a delivery of all TAGS applications for elk and antelope filed thru Cabelas. Please contact AZGF commission and tell them sorry but rules are rules and the 7:00 PM cutoff must be followed! I feel bad for the folks missing out but sorry, if it were you or me we would lose. The AZGF commission is to discuss this. Cabelas is sending out letters to all involved. All T.A.G.S. applications were late due to a foul up by UPS.

Really Important!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Click on the AZGFD website then scroll down to "inside AZGFD" - then hit "Commision" and write each commissioner to follow the rules and deny this. Very important, only takes a minute

SCI scoring
couestaxi replied to Coues 'n' Sheep's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
Coues'n'sheep - They were way off on their point measurements. As a long time scorer for SCI, ALL measurments are critical and they all add up. Dick Tone who scores P&Y animals and I have compared measuring issues over the years. It is very important to get it right every time. I score for SCI because I do not believe God made all animals perfect or symetrical. Get it rescored and voice your is concerns with the SCI recod book committee. If you are in the east Phoenix valley I can do it for you. -
Bulldog's first Collared Peccary Hunt
couestaxi replied to TAM's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Tim & Bulldog - Had a great time. Your boy is crack-up!!! Made the girls forget about the "hunters" we ran into. Great way to start the kids off - In the woods. I put in a picture of Ashlyn and her Javelina. This was her first Arizona animal after she broke the ice in Namibia with a beautiful springbuck. Both of my daughters love to hunt and have a great respect for the outdoors. I couldn't imagine a better way to raise kids than the "real world" way. Enclosed are a few pic's of previous hunts the kids have been on. Makes you wonder what the city folk are doing???? Thanks again Tim Ashlyn 2008 Javelina Bethany and Ashlyn - 2007 Giraffe - Namibia Bethany 54" Kudu Bull taken in Namibia Ashlyn Springbuck - Namibia 2007 -
Tim - Nice fox! I have a bunch of 190 grain VLD's loaded up over Rel-25 for my 300 RUM. Have not got a chance to get out to shoot them yet. I needed a OCL gauge from Sinclair International along with a Ogive gauge to get the seating depth correct. This does make my 300 RUM a single shot but thats OK as thats all I get anyways! Contact Berger for load data. Have 2 friends that love them in both shooting and hunting situations. The Sinclair Guage is by far the best on the market. http://www.sinclairintl.com/

He ended up at 87 0/8"! Really surprised me for basically being a 2 point. The G-3 was non-scorable. Really lots of character to the rack. 16" mains with a 13 1/2" inside spread. I'm guessing that arrow had been in there at least a year judging from the calcium build up around the arrow. Congrat's again you guys! Hope your eye's cleared up.

While caping this buck out I pulled a 3" section of carbon shaft out of the head. At the back of the throat where the nasal cavity enters the mouth was a three blade NAP Shockwave broadhead. This deer had no fat on him. The broad head tip actually obstructed the throat. It has been that way for some time. The bone had completely healed around the shaft.

Governor appoints commisioner after opposition from hunting organizations

One of the NRA Rep's said the support for nomination was a tradeoff for other looming issues. I think that is a nice way of saying "sellout" -
Once again we are a target of the AZ Government
couestaxi replied to 105Coues's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
Thats interesting!, I did not know AZGF got funds from the gas tax. AZGF puts out brochures dealing with illegal off road use and a hotline to call, they have signs with a 1-800-vandals number on it warning folks to stay on established roads and trails. Yet if you call any of the numbers the all end up at operation Game Thief. The dispatcher will then tell you AZGF does not have time to try the Sheriff. They won't even transfer your call! They will gladly take your money but will not do anything about those breaking our current laws. Why not try to enforce what we have. Why would those that don't abide by our current laws change their minds? I think it is just an excuse to get rid of off road vehicles all together. Especially the wording on "road open" signs. -
Only remedy is an elected commisioner
couestaxi replied to hawkeye's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
I applaude your effots to see a change. I know everyone is frustrated with the department. Less than 1% of our hunters do anything to actually work with the department or for wildlife in Arizona. Most are consumptive users of the system. They just sit back and complain about not being drawn. Well, their voices have been heard and acted on. If you would really like to help and see how things work join the Wildlife Conservation Council and attend a few meetings. People have no idea what a political mess we really have here. Their web site is below: http://www.arizonawildlifecouncil.org/ One member from each sportsing group attends to discuss current issues and solutions. Quite often Duane Shroufe and other top dogs are there. The Commission meetings are not the best place to get things done. Most issues are decided well before those occur. Keep fighting for change or it won't occur. Be carefull with the elected commissioner though the Humane Society will want to be your best friend! -
GIANT 150+ buck killed in Sonora
couestaxi replied to frank175's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Mexico
Yes there was a 152" buck just killed but I don't have permission to discuss it yet!It was scored by an official scorer so it is not a hoax. Saw pic's last week, what a pig! That is a gross non-typical score. -
Revisiting electronic ear muffs for field use
couestaxi replied to kphunter's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
He was actually the shooter! I shot the gun 1 time at a coyote and it physically hurt my ears. It is a 7mm RUM in a Remington 700. You don't realize how much damage you do to your ears with a muzzle brake during the hunt. With a deer in front you don't feel the recoil or the damage to your ears. (my wife still says its selective hearing) I was taking my 300 RUM down to get a brake put on but changed my mind after this happened. I'd rather deal with a little recoil than not be able to hear anymore. I use a sled type device at the range anyway so recoil, even if severe, is not bad during practice and you don't feel it on the hunt. My daughter is very recoil shy so I did put a muzzle brake and a SIMS pad on her .270 WSM. What a joy to shoot but we do wear the electronic ear muffs so we can communicate during the shot. I can wisper and she can hear great while getting set up for the shot. Low level noise is amplified so you can hear great but the shot is blocked out. At the shot it is really cool, you don't hear the muzzle blast but you do hear the echo! I can't say enough about these hearing protectors. I actually think they make you a better shot for the following reason. I found myself actually flinching from the muzzle blast using conventional ear plugs during practice. Much more than one would from recoil actually. With the electronic muffs I actually shoot better and have better control. Since shooting is mostly mental this made a big difference, especially to my daughter. Just my 2 cents worth
