    10 Bonus Points, What Unit?

Hold out for the strip. I drew it with 7 points and met someone on my hunt that drew it twice 4 years apart. 10 points are hard to come by!

    Water holes

The biggest challenge is keeping them clean and full. When you provide an artificial water source for wildlife It alters their habits and they become dependent on it (especially in the desert). I feel I'm obligated to keep the water available. Everything and anything that drinks water will help themselves to it. Coyotes and javelina are very destructive, they will dig up the drinkers and chew on the hoses to get at any water when the levels are low. Once thirsty cows find it you're in for a lot of work! Regular trips are required to check for leaks, so when I do this I take a load of water just in case.. I don't mean to discourage you but it gets to be time consuming and expensive. Fuel will be your biggest expense.

    Water holes

Yup! We've been able to take a few great bucks using this method. I shot that top buck with my bow, the rest are still growing.

    Water holes

This is what I use in Mexico. It's a 55 gallon honey barrel cut at an angle with a float attached to the side near the base. I run poly tubing (buried) from a 300 gallon cistern 20 to 30 Yds. away. I sow a grate or chicken wire to the barrel in order to protect the float from swimming javelina and coyotes. It's important to know what the barrels have been used for in the past, you don't want harsh chemicals, oils or solvents contaminating the water and keeping the critters away. The best time to set them up is now when natural water sources are dwindling and temperatures are rising. I find that if I give the ground and surrounding vegetation a good soaking every time I fill the cisterns the deer find it quicker. Salt in a granulated form is a good compliment to this setup. I have about 20 of these sites scattered throughout the desert and it's a lot of work keeping them full, but very rewarding if done right. As far as it being legal in Arizona, I can't help you there. But if It is, It's probably better done on private property or away from traffic where you can keep it a secret.

Brick House Security makes an awesome 360 rear view mirror cam. It's a little pricey though.

    need a little help...

Congrats on a lucky draw! Reminds me of when I drew my 9 bull and 13b tag the same year. I drew that lope tag last year and had a blast. We saw some great ones! Best of luck to you!

Should I switch to a drop away?

So you shoot a drop away..... Yes fixed rests dominate target venues, but who shoots whisker biscuits for target?????? Who has perfect form?????? Who can't use a more forgiving rest????? When I'm at the range I can pay extra close attention to my form and hope it becomes second nature and translates perfectly into a hunting situation. However when I hunt this steep and rugged terrain after these ghosts perfect form is not always there. Sometimes your crouching, kneeling, sitting, or off camber on a steep hill or rock shooting past obstacles.. I'll take all the help I can from a more forgiving rest.

Should I switch to a drop away?

I've been shooting Trophy Taker drop a ways for as long as I can remember. I've taken many trophies on stalks and never had any issues with sound or mechanics. I've shot WBs and their groups don't compare, especially at extended ranges(100+) or when using helical fletching. I've recently switched to the Smack Down Pro on my Carbon Spyder 34 and like the full containment. The wide launcher eliminates the chances of your arrow falling off during the draw cycle. This limb driven design stays on your arrow longer and drops quicker than cable attached types thus ensuring better flight and fletch clearance. I chose to attach it to the upper limb so I can keep an eye on it, and it clears better on the shooting machine when I tune my arrows. In my opinion if I can do anything to be more accurate its my obligation to do so (for the sake of the animals). WBs are stone age training wheels! Do yourself a SOLID and switch. My 2 pennies.

    Really late rut?

Both muleys and coues still rutting in Sonora. Three years ago I got to see a spotted fawn on opening day of archery season in January. I should have taken a picture.

MH 370 is NOT coming to a city near you

Covering issues that actually affect you and me are no where near the top of revenue and ratings starved corporate media networks. They don't $ELL. You know what does? Speculation, conjecture, and soap opera drama about a plane! The real tragedy is that the anguishing families looking for answers now have to watch and listen to networks desperate for profits turn their loved ones into a supernatural sideshow.

    Beware of Sonoran Outfitters!

On Thursday I went to the SAGARHPA headquarters in Hermosillo to have a clients ram plugged and readied for export. Then I went to AGADES to have some paperwork done. While I was there I told anyone who would listen about your uncles experience with this outfitter. Your uncle should contact the Sonora State Police and PROFEPA, and provide them with evidence (pictures) that a ram was unlawfully taken (no tag)! State police would love to have a chat with him! For future reference all sheep tags in Sonora are now personalized and come with the hunters name printed alongside all the other info. Your outfitter should hand you this tag along with all your other paperwork before you begin your hunt. Preferably before you pay the balance!

    Anyone going to hunt Mexico?

Just finished packing and leaving tomorrow morning for another Go at it. I flung an arrow at a beast of a muley last week and killed an ocotillo. Hope I can find him again and put It together. Coues are starting to cooperate, just haven't found THE ONE. Good luck to everyone heading down and hope your Sonoran dreams come true!!!!!

    Caseys 30" Muley, 1st deer!

WOW!....... the buck is nice too.
  21. A good friend hired me to guide his 12 year old son Daniel in hopes of finding him a good buck. After an uneventful morning we jumped a hog out of its bed on our way back to camp for lunch. Daniel made a perfect shot at 60yds with his 7mm Rem. mag. The buck is a heavy 5x5 and grosses just over 200 inches. The look on his dads face when all this went down was priceless! When I asked him what his thoughts were he said he was shocked, amazed, and extremely proud! After high fives and pictures my freind looks over at me and says "MY TURN". We were so exited that we forgot all about lunch and kept on hunting. About an hour later we spotted a bachelor group of 3 bucks running away from us on an opposite hill. The lead buck (and smartest) was a heavy wide bruiser that never gave him a shot. After several times of blowing on my deer call the other two hit the brakes long enough for me to range and tell him which one was the better of the two incase he wanted to take him. He did'nt hesitate and took the 350 yard shot at the tall chocolate horn 3x4. The bullet found its target and now we had a father and son double! We loaded the second buck and headed to camp, but we did'nt make it that far. About 7 or 8 miles later, In the midle of the road about 150 yds ahead stood a wide 4x4 that woud'nt move. He was just too tempting and I decided to burn one of my leftover tags on this 30 incher. It was a great opening day in Old Mexico!

    Opening day success in Sonora!

seriously. what an epic hunt that would make for. That afternoon we celebrated by fishing for flounder from shore. Tasty!!!!!!
  23. NO, border units are SCARY all the bucks are GONE! Please apply somewhere else! HAHAHA BUAHAHA! I only hunted down there once for about rwo and a half days. First night I had three illegals traipse right past me at about 25 yards. First one didn't see me the second one waved at me and I waved back. Third one also passed by without noticing me but the a few minutes later I saw them come back and the second one was pointing me out to the third one. I waved at them, they waved to me and then they went away without incident. Still made me nervous though. Couldve been mules coming through that pass just as easily as migrant workers. I'll hunt there again at some point but next time I will remember to pack a sidearm. These southern units have some awesome country and great bucks! As far as safety, you'll be fine. Drug mules and Undocumented Migrants want nothing to do with hunters.
  24. Super bucks and sounds like a great father & son adventure. Lifetime memories for sure! Makes me remember my first buck.
