What are the best aftermarket barrel options?
WampusCat replied to Presmyk's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Adding Broughton barrels to the list. All are good but I have owned more Kreigers than any. Always happy with them. I'll also add Beanland Custom Rifles to smith list. Jon builds an amazing rifle and one of the nicest guys you'll. Call his shop and talk to him. -
Cool looking deer. Wonder if he busted up the tips early on in the velvet growth? I love my 6.5 SAUM too!

Great job. That boy is learning more than Coues hunting! I appreciate your write up and pictures.

Got a Dillion RL 550C...Could use some help now....
WampusCat replied to Tannert's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
I am not familiar with the setup and adjustment of the 550 but I understand that press is a good one. Once you get it set up its the same process as any other as far as basic reloading stages on a progressive. Size/deprime/prime, case flare/powder drop, bullet seat, case neck crimp (depending on your die choice) Read all you can on the fundamentals of reloading but I would also recommend stopping by Dillon for the set up tips they will offer. My biggest piece of advice would be to fully grasp the concept/fundamentals of the process and work through slowly and strive for consistency. The speed of a progressive will come eventually. Work to create perfect and safe ammo first not lots of ammo. A word of caution for 9mm and other small cases. The difference between starting loads and maximum loads reaching dangerous pressures is not very much. Some cases can be less than .5 gr difference or 1/14,000 of a pound! Be sure your scale is calibrated and you are measuring powder weight as accurately as possible. Lots of info here too. https://www.dillonprecision.com/bl-550-basic-loader_8_1_25792.html http://brianenos.com/pages/dillon -

Very cool old man of the mountain! Hard to compare the points or inches on an animal taken with good company. Awesome animal. Glad you got that Berger back.

Big congrats and a best of luck on your recovery. Always neat to recover the slug. When you mentioned the rifle I couldn't help but think about Lark.

Yes! The story was great before but the pictures complete it. Congrats on your trip and logging some serious memories. That bow is a tank! Thanks for sharing.

Congrats on the hunt! Hope you make a post about it. 500+ is no joke in a 20mph wind.

Looking for 10 or 12ga lead BB shells
WampusCat replied to azbow's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
This is the stuff I was talking about and will continue to look for. Used to be easy to find on the shelf at Cabelas or BassPro a year or two ago but they were all gone last time I checked. I'm sure those others will work but these were pure awesome on a predator stand. Should have stock piled. Federal Wing-Shok 12 ga, BB, 1 7/8 ounce, Box of 25 https://www.midwayusa.com/product/889726/federal-premium-wing-shok-ammunition-12-gauge-3-1-7-8-oz-buffered-bb-copper-plated-shot-box-of-25 http://www.federalpremium.com/ammunition/shotshell/family/wing-shok/wing-shok-magnum/p158-bb -
Good luck on your hunt! I'll be watching for your write up and pics.

Two New Rifle Upgrades Coming Soon To An Addict Near You...
WampusCat replied to lancetkenyon's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Happy to help. Lance, what is your barrel length on that Sherman? You plan to work these up with H-1000 or RL26? -
Looking for 10 or 12ga lead BB shells
WampusCat replied to azbow's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
Hello friend, I have looked all over the web the last year trying to find my old favorite coyote load of Federal 3" lead BB's. I think they have completely discontinued the larger lead shot lines. -
Johnson's floor wax in the yellow tub works great! Goes on so thin its hard to tell its there but it will work.

Piecing together a heavy barrel .223 trainer for "my son". (read this as a varmint/range gun that will see a mucho grande round count without regard for barrel life that my young son will learn on when he can get it away from his dad) Specifically looking for a take off Rem 700 Short Action from HS Precision with the full length bedding block with or without the palm swell. Similar to the style that come factory on the "police" models or the VSF / VSSF series. Needs a Sendero/Rem Varmint contour channel with no prior bedding job. Color does not matter. Let me know if you have one you'd consider parting with. I'll need it shipped if you are comfortable with that. Thanks!

Good talking with you. Thanks for the offer! Still looking.

The perfect pack for hunting coues.
WampusCat replied to COA's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
While I usually intend on staying out longer than what you describe I've had a life of carrying heavy packs. Everything from the old ALICE ruck system, the Eberlestocks when they became popular, and currently the Kifaru system. My whole hearted recommendation would be to eat the cost of a Kifaru frame and have the versatility to choose the bag style/size for the trip you are taking. As mentioned the 22 Mag or the Nomad sounds perfect for what you want. They have a frameless system with their omni suspension in the 14'er and Tarryall packs (14'er being more customizable for the specific trip) that may suit you well if you don't want a bigger frame pack. Its just like the rest of our equipment. If you can manage to cough up the cash the first time you will be happy and not lust after the annual upgrade cycle we seem to do and save some cash in the long run. The Eberlestocks were nice and I really liked the idea of the rifle scabbards although not as handy as they seem when your pack is full and everything cinched down tight. (that rifle is not coming out of there) I packed 3-5 days worth of camp many times and Coues out once each in the "Just One" and the "Gunslinger 2" packs. Again, nice packs and I appreciate their features but they really missed the mark for me when they are loaded to the max. I could never get them adjusted to the comfort levels a Kifaru offers when the miles start to add up. You will also not find a better customer service experience than Kifaru anywhere. I hope I don't sound like a fanboy but I will be a Kifaru customer for life. Take it for what its worth, I've never tried MtnOps Pics as requested "Just One" "Gunslinger 2" "Reckoning" -
Depending on your powder/bullet combo you can achieve full powder burn inside of 20". There has been a lot written on the accuracy benefits of a shorter barrel. Cliff notes would read something along the lines of "shorter is stiffer, less prone to harmonic vibration/variations". I had a TacOps .308 (Echo-51) and that smith swears by short barrel 308s. He wanted an 18" and I wanted 22". We went with 20" and would have been happy with an 18" after shooting it! Thing was a hammer and I didn't notice any velocity loss over longer barreled 308s. Stiff load of Varget and 175 Bergers being mistaken in the pits for a WinMag at the 1K yd line in Yuma. At the end of the day it was still a 308 and it was sold to invest in longer range stuff. Whatever you build I hope you share the pics.

I don't have any pictures of my specific setup but after having a Berger 210 gr (7 or 8 years ago) give less than desirable performance I started drilling the tips using micro pin vise style bits. I am not removing jacket material. Only clearing the opening/cavity of any debris. Can't remember the exact size but you can eyeball it pretty good for each specific projectile if you buy a set that gives plenty of options like this... https://www.amazon.com/CML-Supply-Micro-Drill-Chuck/dp/B001RJE3X8/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1508750194&sr=8-3&keywords=pin+vice+drill+bit I do not know if a clogged tip caused my problem long ago as there is no way to prove it but I noticed many of the tips were clogged in that lot. I also don't know that drilling will prevent a repeat of my results but it is a major piece of mind (confidence) for me now. I read about others doing this a few years ago and it has become a habitual part of my load regimen for hunting ammo. No problems since.
