    Calls

Bugling bull matriarch cow call. Its a reed call and works very well. I have that with a few select diaphragm calls that i carry at all times.

Elk, moon phase and the Rut

Oddly enough most of the times i can remember the full moon thing coming into play I also remember it being hotter than normal so i really cant say one way or the other which one holds more truth. I know last year for my buddies hunt it was 90ish degrees at camp during the middle of the day and that sucked especially when its 80+ out by 8 am and your hiking all over the country side. That being said we found that the lower warmer country in his unit had bulls still traveling in bachelor herds and when we finally got into them in higher country and it cooled down a bit the rut was definitely on. This probably doesn't help one bit, sorry!

    Just want to vent

All of this makes sense, but furthermore people getting upset that they didnt draw is like being mad that you didnt win the lottery. Its still a random drawing.....the key word in this is RANDOM. Unless you have the max BP's working in your favor you are subject to the RANDOM part of this drawing. As much as it sucks myself and a few good buddies plan on hunting out of state every year and the draw for elk in AZ is just a bonus at this point in time!

Is anyone calling them in right now?

Was helping a buddy this weekend. Found that a lot of guys were just sitting back trying to call the bulls in. Where we were the bulls were bugling all morning but not moving in on one another. We moved between 2 groups of hunters blowing their bugles and cow calls non stop on 2 different occasions and got within 60 yards of 3 different bulls with relative ease. I am still very new at this, but it definitely seems like people get complacent with calling and trying to bring the bulls in like the shows instead of letting the elk do the talking and putting some miles on their boots. Saw a few small herds of cows with no bulls in sight....dont think the rut is in full swing up in the area we were in.

    Found Achery Kill 23N (UPDATED)

There have been a number of these threads now, and the only thing that should be coming out of this is that the person who shot the bull recovered the bull thanks to someone else being a stand up person. Why cant it just be left at that, every single thread has bee hi jacked by people discussing the amount of wounded animals and how people just make poor decisions. I would be willing to bet that before a site like this you probably had the same thing going on it just wasn't publicly talked about....and nobody could judge another hunter and his decisions with the exception of those people he told himself.

    Unit 20C

I have had 2 tags in this unit, filled one and my buddy filled his in that unit last year. It is a difficult hunt though, good bino's are a must and plan to do some hiking and a lot of spotting. I will send you a PM with some areas that we have had success in. And I couldn't agree more about the amount of tags considering the land restrictions.

    stratify hunts

Yeah, I mean in the end as long as the tag amount stays the same. I know the area I just hunted was running wild with guys blowing cow calls for days on end, and the better quality time of the hunt was during the week days when a lot of guys had to leave. Interesting thought here, I will give it that.

    stratify hunts

So if I am understanding this right, what mc68 is saying is this. You have 100 hunters currently putting in for say 40 tags in one unit, you split that hunt to 2 different hunts of 20 tags each. Now you have 100 hunters who have to decide between one or the other so you could potentially have 80 hunters putting in for one hunt of 20 but 20 hunters putting in for the other hunt of 20. So depending on how people applied you could have increased odds for one of the hunts, but you could also have decreased odds for one of the hunts as well? So in the end I am not seeing 100% how your odds really increase unless you have some sort of inside info letting you know which hunt had more applications attached to it before you applied yourself?

Big Bull Found dead in Unit 1

Unfortunately i fall in this category of having lost a bull this year. And i wasnt just "flinging" arrows. I had a bull walk through a very narrow shooting lane at 20 yards. I took a good shot at him, but he was behind a very small juniper with a couple of branches that had no leaves that after the fact we discovered went right across the body of the elk. Now being that everything happened so bang bang i obviously had no way of seeing those branches. I found my arrow with blood on it, and we had good blood right out of the gate but about 40 yards out we had nothing. I am guessinthe arrow must have deflected off and missed the vitals altogether. And the area i hunted had a lot of fresh track through it so we lost the track. We swept the area, 3 of us in 15 yard gaps for close to a mile, and nothing. I know there are some real jack *ss hunters out there who would leave a good bull on the ground but there are some of us who genuinely have lost what may have been a bull of a lifetime for an archer. To boot, this was my first archery elk hunt....i experienced both the extreme high and low in one day of hunting.

    Lost bull 4b?

Just getting home to where i can post again. Pretty sure my shot got deflected off of a branch from a juniper on the bull that i hit and he is still alive and at large running around up there. We had very little blood and scoured the area for hours only to find nothing. I obviously responded to this post because i didnt think it could happen to more than one hunter in the same unit on the same day, but apparently it did....I spent 3 more days up there in that area hunting, and searching just in case.
