Making tamales aren't all that hard. We usually make 20-30 doz when we do them. By the time you do the meat, get the maza done up and put them together, you'll be into the project several hours, but to do it isn't all that hard. Not much better that doing a "quality control" taste test on the first batch that comes out.

What would you do? (hunting etiquette)
ghost hunter replied to PSEHunter's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
Had the same thing happen in 32 a couple of years ago. Tried to us them to my advantage. Tried to use the next truck load that came up a few minutes behind the first truck load (not part of the first group). Finally decided I couldn't beat'm so next year changed units. What was really sad was I had my son with me, (13), the first group had 2 or 3 kids, (dad or ?? was a great role model), the second group were all adults. Why would they try and cut in on a kids hunt? Hunting etiquette or Hunting ethics? Not sure but it didn't sit well with me. -
Alright. I have seen enough. - Im sold.

I've got two Stealthcam 35mm cams that were NIB and neither worked. Pick a different one. -

I've looked around for it but it seems to have disappeared. Any idea where to look??

I too, thought about what Monstercoues was saying. Did some checking around and realized that just 1 local guide had 7-8 clients tag out during the Dec/Jan archery season last year. When you consider that there were only 50 Dec. rifle tags for that unit and a 20% success would be a harvest of 10 deer, this guide alone, accounted for almost as many deer taken as the entire Dec. rifle hunt. Much as I hate to admit it, the late archery hunters may actually be taking more than their fair share. Luckily, I'm not part of that problem. (oh what am I saying?!?!?!?) Any yes Fred33, G&F still does their aerial surveys each year.

Monstercoues, To say its all about 'money' and not about 'management' may be a bit simplistic. BUT when your only revenue source is the actual sportsmen its not hard to imagine that management might not give way to economics at some point. You are right, the G&F employees are under paid and I feel for them. We all need to support the new sales tax initiative that is being proposed for the 2008 election. It will add a different revenue source that is not tied to license, tag, equipment sales. Hopefully, that will eliminate all this "its all about money" talk. I volunteer alot as well and I listen to what they say. Unfortunately, sometimes what comes out at the top ain't the same. Maybe they are trying to 'manage' the archery success rate, maybe they are trying to deal with people taking more than 1 deer a year, maybe they have figured out how to eliminate the "two season hunter" and take those double dippers tags and sell-assign-allocate, what ever you want to call it, to others. No, they won't generate any more money from tag sales, but they will get more people into the field and THEY will buy more equipment which will filter back to G&F as fed money. I've been a two season hunter for the past 25+ years and I never took more than 1 deer a year. I always figured that 'eating' a rifle tag or vise versa was just my way to donate to G&F. Guess its true, the honest ones get punished for what a few knuckleheads have done.

I believe two things already mentioned are correct: 1) most all of the achery tags are bought by people with or have put in for rifle tags 2) money seems to be the root of all their decisions BUT, I also believe: 1) G&F believes that a portion, big or small, of the archery hunters are tagging 2 deer because they have "2 tags in their pockets and are "entitled" to get 2' 2) By going to a draw for archery based on harvest numbers, it will actually let G&F use their new buzz phrase, "expand hunter opportunity" because they will take the extra tags not allocated to the archers and put them in the rifle hunts. Boy will it get crowded in the rifle hunts. But the archers are going to get &*()_ed Just my .02

Probably the best indicator is "no hunters", but there may be a reason for that. If you are seeing deer or at least deer sign AND no hunters, that is where I would start to concentrate.

I, too, am a long time MM member but I got tired of the few who had an opinion on everything, knew more than anyone, were best friends with everyone,...etc.

Camera thieves SUCK!
ghost hunter replied to azsagebrush's topic in Photography of Coues Deer and Other Wildlife
I put mine out sparingly, but ALWAYS tape a note on the front tab of the film that says "If this is being developed by some one other than (your name) please call the police." Only person who will ever see this is the film developer. Not sure how you would do the same with one of those digital cams. -
Why tags fees are increasing
ghost hunter replied to mntman's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
The only way that you can break the cycle, is to have G&F's funding come from another source. Right now it is based on license and tags sales. BUT what if it was based on a 'general sales tax'. The idea was offered a year or two ago and seemed to just disappear into the night. Not sure why. Missouri does this and their G&F has plenty to operate on. The down side is that with other people contributing, you also are going to get demands from them as to how it is spent. And no, I don't like a tiered pricing scale based on whether it is a "standard" hunt, a "quality" hunt or a "high demand" hunt. -
Guess I'll act like a salmon and try and swim against the current. That really isn't a bad idea. One species won't fly, but if you limited it to 2 (two) fall hunts and 1 (one) spring hunt, that might spread people out alittle. How that would apply to juniors I don't know. I think they should get more tags than they get now and be able to apply for everything. Thinking 'outside the box' maybe the way to end the hunter-vs-G&F battle that rages every year.

...and people wonder why I keep doing it the 'old fashioned way'...with my pen and paper. Technology is GREAT...when it works correctly. If not, it has the ability to screw tens of thousands of people with just one key stroke. OOps, I'm on my soap box again. -

Hillary Clinton
ghost hunter replied to KidBowHunter's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
Not sure what kind of immigration laws you think New Zealand has but when my family went there (some to work the year they allowed and some to visit) each and every one of them had to produce a return airfair ticket before they would let them in. In some ways, I think that would be a good thing here. 1 year and 'see ya'. Other than that, I can't think of much that is more scary than Hillary becoming 'Madame President' -
What is the greatest danger to Coue's hunting in your state?
ghost hunter replied to SilentButDeadly's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
Well, I picked loss of habitat. Mostly because all of the places I used to hunt as a kid now have names like: "The Canyons", Sycamore Creek Ranches, etc. Heck they even got names for the road that was there then and all the ones they pushed in there when those blood sucking developers showed up and started building all those houses. If it isn't the 'planned developments' its the "you can't live without" your own 40 ranchette. Pardon the rant. -
Whats In A Name
ghost hunter replied to GameHauler's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
Being a third generation AZ native, I've hunted coues here for along time. The first forum I signed on to was MM.Com. I was glad to see that Alan (Coueshunter) had picked "Buranut" because that left "Grey Ghost" (what alot of people call coues) for me. But alas, a fine gentleman from Tenn. had already used "Grayghost". Since he was a Civil War buff, I'm assuming he picked it for the Civil War hero, Col. John Mosby, who was known as the "Gray Ghost". With that, I just made it 'Ghost hunter'. After signing on here, I just used the same name so I wouldn't forget who I am. -
Dos Cabazes got some snow a couple of days ago but not much. It was cloud covered much of yesterday and today as well. Since we have about 2" on the ground in Willcox, I think its safe to assume that DC got some snow on it. How much? Have to wait until tomorrow and the sun comes out.

Removing foxtails from fleece.

The comb works great on tight weave materials, but as for fleece, I agree with the boring movie. Popcorn and large drink would also help. -
Range Finder that you put on your bow
ghost hunter replied to punkrcker1344's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
Not positive, but last I knew P&Y won't accept any animals shot with one of those on your bow. -
I bought the RX II this year and I used it to range the shot. We tried it on various objects at various angles and it seemed to work without problems. It has the TBR but without the extras that the RXIII and IV have and without the cost. Of course, after I ordered it, there were a whole bunch of people complaining about it and threatening to send theirs back. If I had seen that I probably could have bought one from them and saved $$. How do you like your....
ghost hunter replied to Kilimanjaro's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
I usually make jerky out of mine and save it for next years hunt. Tough chewing, but it will hang with you for a while. I like the sound of that receipe with the tequilla. Might have to try that one. -
Glad to see you stuck with it and finally got it working. Keep us 'up to date' on your trip.
