That didn't take long. Good show for the young man and his father. -
I was checking my pics from this area last year and I see that the big bucks shed there velvet in the last week of Sept and the young bucks went two weeks longer. . There is definitely some funky genetics in this area. Look at this guy. Despite the camera's date, pic is from last week. Some close ups of his garbage

Heck, I don't know who is worrying. It ain't me. I'm just lurnin and having fun. Had an elk sounding like he was trying to pick a fight with my truck today. I was on the rim up above, but I wasn't too far away and it was obvious that he had to be within 20 yards of my truck. I found another arrowhead and an old pony shoe. I walked in on a herd of javelina and I saw lots of deer. Good times. No worries.

Here are a couple of examples to which I refer.

First off, here's the buck as of Sept. 5. . Now, I have another question. How much does a deer's first year's antlers foretell that buck's antler development in future years?. I.E. if a deer has a drop tine in it's first year, will it be sure or most likely that it will have a drop tine in subsequent years? If a buck's antlers are a-typical in it's first year, will it be a-typical throughout it's life?

I know some of the Pine Mt Wilderness herd head down into the Brooklyn Peak - Red MT area during mid winter. That is, essentially, just North of Phoenix. I just realized how many Red Mtns there are in the State. So to be clear, just East of Black Canyon City

Remember water. When I am solo backpack hunt in this state, I carry in water and cache it out before the season starts. I do not want to rely on water sources and filtration systems in the desert. Having water available will save on time and energy when you want to be hunting for horny critters, not of water.

Yeah, and I win every time I buy a lottery ticket too. Craxy

I quit hunting for 15 years of my life because I was such a pi$$ poor hunter when I was young. I was taught wrong when i was young. My dad is not a hunter, so I learned from friends and what not. In my teens, hunting was hopping in a truck with rifles and a twelve pack of beer for each hunter. Or, I heard so many stories of people taking shots that were well beyond their capabilities. Sad thing was, when I was young it all seemed normal and part of hunting. One year, I killed an elk that I never harvested and found later in the season all bloated. I also Killed two deer that year that I didn't harvest. I got so disturbed by my own actions that I essentially imposed upon myself a suspension of my hunting. I told myself all those years that I didn't hunt that when I do get back into it, I'd be a whole different kind of hunter. I think hunting ethics have been raised in general across the whole hunting community over the years, but I think there are a lot of people who are still lousy hunters with lousy ethics, but now they don't admit it or lie about it. I hear how everybody has such high standards in regards to hunting, but then I get out there and I see things that tell a different story.

I am not an archery hunter I seriously have considered starting. I got within archery range on a couple bucks today. One of the reasons I haven't made the leap to take up archery is the idea that if all us rifle hunters took up archery, they'd have to start a drawing for these tags that are currently over the counter.

So how much more grow time do these muleys have? I was just studying the pics a little closer and something is a little curious. The shortest point on the turkey foot right rear either grew inches in a day or the close up pic is older than the date on the cam suggests.
-
update. Despite the date on cam, this pic is from this morning as i showed up at this camera 20 minutes after this pic. Notice he is shedding his summer coat. I saw some older bucks today that were already all gray. The last two pics are from yesterday morning including a close up of the turkey foot. He survived the onslaught of the first couple weeks of archery season.

One of the truly great inventions of all time. I hate mosquitos and my arms legs often look like Walmart's hamburger after some time in the woods. They do not work with wasps or other insects, but mosquitos stay away.

I know why the laws exist regarding wildlife and the fight against poaching, but all these laws are still overbearing legalese that probably do little to stop poaching. Instead it forces simple country folk to develop a complex and nuanced understanding of law like a friggin lawyer. Good common folk are at risk of being criminalized, without any ill intent, because of their gazillion dang laws.

What's the big deal about the Strip anyways?

I think I have what are 4 different cats within a few hundred yards and few days apart. I am not the expert, so you tell me if these are 4 different cats. I know the two in the same place are a mom and cub, because the cub fallowed the mom across the frame. The cub looks like it's about the age when mommy says "good luck". The other two cats look like two different cats to me. If I am right, isn't that a lot of cats in one little area?

I think it's a consensus that deer and elk see ultraviolet light. Your regular laundry soap/fabric softener can leave you looking like a neon sign to deer.

The date on the last pic is wrong of course. The pic was taken in the same time period as the others.

second on the P85. That handgun helped me lose interest in semi auto handguns for a long time. My Marlin 39A. Bought it new in '09. It was built at the New Haven plant, but it was a period when the new Rem ownership was radically changing the manufacturing process in an effort to speed-up rate of production. Lots of bad rifles made during that time period and the subsequent move and transition period. The rifle has had a fail to fire issue and has been back to Marlin twice and a couple gunsmiths and yet the problem persists. Wouldn't feel right selling it, so I am sitting on it and waiting to see what happens with Marlin.

HEY!!! ummmmmmm ... Good point.

Sounds funny to me, but people get funny when money gets thrown around. No business of mine I suppose.
-
Wow. That is quite interesting. I'd say you called it, but it would make me scratch my head if I came across those deer. I am neither the expert nor have I the time in the field in Arizona like a lot of the folk here at this forum, but your pic is the first evidence I have seen of Coues rolling with Muleys. Learn sumptin new everyday.

Does this pic of some Muley tail help you figure it out?

I have one and just love the pink for color coordinating. Just Josh'n. I do have an LC9S and it's a great little gun. Weighs only 17 oz and fits in the palm of your hand. It shoots surprisingly well and accurate for such a small gun. That is a great price. Good luck on the sale.

Best story all day right there..
