BFG upgraded the A/T KO and it's now called the KO2. The lugs are not quite as tall and are reinforced. The old design would get squirrelly under a heavy load. The new version is for more stable under a heavy load and are designed to wear better. The Cooper ATP (Discount Tire only) is a really good tire for the price. The tread has been good to great in all conditions except the sloppiest mud. They perform exceptionally well on pavement and and are surprisingly adept to steep and loose.

I think that Cam is going to have a hard time living down the fact that he was a total coward right at the time his team needed him the most. Never saw a football player that was afraid to jump on a fumble. The world all saw it and he has to wear it. Makes ya feel sorry for the guy, ugh ugh, not.

If I didn't already have 12 cams, I'd jump on these.

news release - chad smith - helicoter chasing antelope update
MT_Sourdough replied to elkaholic's topic in The Campfire
armed hikers? What? This conversation sure went to the pooper. -
You are correct regarding "expanding" cup and core bullets. Even most bonded cup and core shed a high percentage of lead. Swift A-frames is one exception, They usually maintain over 95% of it's weight. If you are hunting with a non-expanding bullet, then you better be using a big bore bullet. 30 caliber bullets and smaller will pin-hole through your game if they do not expand. A small 30 call hole can close up and otherwise good shots may lead to lost game.

I have tested the 30 cal 165gr SST in ballistic gel and water tests. Your description of terminal performance is spot on. The jacket will separate from core almost every time, but it always happens near the end of it's penetration. I've tested with velocities from 1800fps to 2890fps and performance was consistent throughout that range..

Effects of so many monsters killed on the strip this year
MT_Sourdough replied to bonecollector777's topic in Mule Deer Hunting
I remember people having a similar debate back in the 80's in Montana. Hunters opinions, as well as the data, said the size of bucks had gone down and many were blaming trophy hunters for taking out the best genetics from the gene pool. Then the Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks as well as some private ranches became more proactive in their approach to management to give bucks a chance to mature. In those areas, the big bucks returned. What was demonstrated, then, was the extreme pressure of over the counter general rifle tags rarely allowed bucks to reach maturity. When more bucks were allowed to mature, the genetics had a chance to reach potential. -
Leupold cds question
MT_Sourdough replied to lionhunter's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
I ordered that Cabelas VX2 3-9x40 CD deal for my 30-06. Then, for my new 300 Win, I ordered a VX3 4.5x14, windplex and CDS from Optics Planet on Black Friday. The deal was 11% off, free shipping, zero tax plus $100 rebate from Leupold. When all is said and done, I will have paid a total of $434 for the scope. Leupold will cut a free custom cap for each scope. I am going to develop a load for the 300 win mag using a super high bc and heavy bullet to minimize wind deflection. For my 30-06, it's easy - 165 SST, .447 bc, 2880fps mv, temp 50, el. 5,000ft, 100 yard zero. Over time, I'll probably have a couple more caps cut for other loads for my 30-06. -
30-06 Barnes Bullets Seating Depth
MT_Sourdough replied to Wetfinn's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
I had the 150gr bst fail on an antelopes shoulder. It was several years ago in Montana. Temps were right about zero or slightly below. The antelope was about 70 yards and I was shooting them out of my 22" barrel 30-06 with about 2900fps mv. I thought I somehow missed and was mad at myself, but when I was butchering the antelope I found the bullet in the shoulder, The bullet just pancaked against the thin shoulder blade. -
Is it a 2nd gen with a duplex reticle?

Coconino National Forest Wants your Feedback On road Closures
MT_Sourdough replied to elkaholic's topic in The Campfire
I do not know that area, but I support road closures. I would love to see atvs parked at gates and trailheads. I agree, though, that the Fish and Game spends more money and energy on self promotion then they do on enforcing the laws. Make the fines for non-compliance high enough and they will redirect their attention to start collecting those fines. It sucks to turn our woods into a police state on the other hand. -
Here's the one i have.

What do you always forget to bring elk hunting?
MT_Sourdough replied to PhxDT's topic in Elk Hunting
The elk. I swear they were there the last time I looked, but now I can't even find a track anywhere. Anybody see my elk? -
I buy smelted lead ingots from different ebay venders and I am very pleased. Those "if it fits, it ships from USPS makes for some cheap shipping, but mail carriers aren't very impressed with 50# boxes of lead. I also use http://www.rotometals.com/Bullet-Casting-Alloys-s/5.htm

You all should talk to the cattleman's associations. One of the reasons why the govt. forces these regulations down people's throats is to serve another constituency. In this case, because of trade deals and regs that markets impose to allow the sale of beef. It forces bureaucrats to arrange a song and dance that demonstrates the State's beef production is safe. Bureaucrats arrange the song and dance, but in this case, it's the sportsman that are forced to do the actual singing and dancing. This has been a battle back in Montana for a long time and is front page stuff.

For those that have been out there this year and have years of experience hunting elk in this state, how does this year rate against others? Just curious to hear about you guys's and gal's thoughts on the subject..

I had the Howa Hogue in 270. The rubberized stock and soft recoil pad helped turn gun shy ex-gf and her sons into shooters. I left the rifle with them so they can continue to fill the freezer after I was gone. That rifle shot everything I put in it as if it was a custom load for the rifle. Everything. Never had another rifle that was that consistent with all types and brands of ammo.

You all are speaking the God's honest truth. Long distance shooters led me to going back to a lever action and the timber. There are skilled long distance shooters who know what they are doing, but for every one of them, there are 4 yahoos who fancy themselves as natural born snipers. A far as driving in to a designated nonmotorized area. UGHH!!! Don't get me started. Let's just say i am not for it. I have had hunters on ATVs pick my pocket before, but they didn't do anything wrong. They just got lucky to ride up into deer that I pushed into a pocket. It stings, but I can't have any animosity for the lucky SOBs that came up at just the right time. Anyways. Your situation is much different and I'd be steaming. What would I have done? Typically, I sneak away without letting them see me and i go some where else.

Sure is some spread.
