The guy comes back home with a myriad of health issues after serving our country in Iraq . Right now he is sitting on his sofa with his foot in a cast after his 18th gazillion surgery. I suppose "lucky" is a relative term. -
I think some people fail to acknowledge that the whole universe does not rotate around them. Elk herd size has other determiners than the wants and wishes of the people who want to hunt them. Before people go around crying bloody murder about herd size, those people oughta talk to the ranchers in the area. It may not seem fair sometimes, but on the scales of land managers, agricultural interests supercede the interests of hunters. A rancher's interests weigh in a lot more than a hunter's interests. caring capacity minus agricultural demands leads to determining herd size. caring capacity - agriculture = elk herd size

I hear big bucks on the strip are attracted to crackling campfires and cold beer. -

Put a hole in the side of my AC. Forgot to set my QAD arrow rest. AC still works, act like it never happened -
Things change fast. The south east area of 8 got pounded by rain Thursday and Friday. Bear Tank went from bone dry for 6 months to overflowing. The fresh vegetation is finally starting to sprout. DT Tank on the rim never went entirely dry, but close. So far it is only about 20% full. The critters in the south half of 8 are starting to spread out, getting back into areas they have vacated since spring.

The Southeast quarter of 8 received some good rain yesterday, but Bear Tank , for example, is still empty. The washes, on the other hand, have good water. The vegetation in the region is starting to come back, but just barely. The promise of a lot more rain over the next few days oughta improve things much more.

monsoons returned today in 19a and 8

based on what I am seeing in unit 8, I'd say the sooner the bull's development the better they'll finish. Lots of bulls looked on par going into the month of June, but growth seems to taper off in the month of June. This basically means older bulls shouldn't be off by much, but younger bulls will be off potential by a more significant amount.

I got a good look today, Bear tank is still totally dry, but all the canyons are holding plenty of water. Seems all the critters dropped into canyons in the lower half of the unit. Lots of food up on rim, but very little food on the flat.

Its about 300 yards off the southside of perkinsville rd where pavement turns to dirt. It's a fairly good sized tank and usually holds water year round, but has been dry since February. According to Dopler, the area has been getting some decent rain the last few days. I might head out tomorrow to take a look see.

I was in the southeast part of 8 yesterday. There has been some moisture there over the past few days, and some of the roads had standing water in them from the Friday/Saturday storms that passed through the area. Overall though some parts in the south half have still had very little rain compared to the north half. As an example, a road that is typically almost impassible at this point (due to monsoons) was basically dry. I did watch a small rain cell move right through the SE area yesterday evening online though. The good news is most of the south area is getting some rain and there is a lot of green out there unlike a month and a half ago. The tank I spoke of earlier in 8 now has a few feet of water in it too, but that's in the NE part of 8. The best news I had yesterday was seeing a pic of a bull in one of the dry areas that has what looks like 16" 3s, very massive, and still growing. His T5s were also very long (12"+) and still growing. It wasn't my camera so I don't have the pic, but was shown the pic by the camera owner. Still could use a lot more rain though... Friday was the last time I was in 8. At that time, it was still dry and Bear Tank, for example, was just cracked dry mud. I was home around noon. Later that day, the dopler radar showed some heavy rain in the area. I was in 8 two days a week for months, but as we approach prime time, I am backing off. For that reason, I wont go up this week. Thanks for the update. Did you get to look at Bear tank when you were up there? That's my primary indicator for the area.

hunting the late season in AZ may be tough hunts, but it looks like a vacation for someone living in the frozen north. For them, it could be considered a warm weather camping trip with your rifle. In other words, good times.

Thankfully, G&F used their brains as opposed to balls in determining to leave it alone for now. They asked leading authorities in the hunting world if cameras are in conflict with philosophy of fair chase. The answer was a unanimous "No." I still have yet to go anywhere that has any or more than one camera. I am not saying that there are not places where they are in excess, but it is obviously more limited than many of you care to acknowledge. Personally, I'd like to see more areas shut down to ATV's and enforced with severe penalty. I have not heard of hunters losing access and opportunities because of cam use, while abuses by ATV users is the number one reason why hunting areas are being lost. Sie la vi

South half of 8 is still needing rain. Southeast quarter of unit is bone dry. Basically no change over the past week.

While I support the idea of a voluntary program, I feel uneasy about the slippery slope. If hunters passively concede on this issue, will it be greasing the rails that lead this issue to a lead ban. I know there has been pushes by anti hunting/gun groups to ban lead in ammo, entirely, in the belief that the cost of all copper bullets can have a detrimental impact on the culture of hunters and shooters.

great price for a '74. If ya can't sell it here, marlinowners dot com will have somebody to take that rifle off your hands.

I was in 8 on Monday. I covered a good amount of area in the south half of the Unit. Some areas had still seen very little rain on the low flats (Lower MC Canyon east to Sycamore Canyon). The Drake plant and surrounding area got lots of water. The mid level areas up to rim are also fairly dry. More water and greening up on rim, but not so much water as to start refilling the empty and almost empty tanks. The northern part of 8 has seen more rain than the southern part based on weather reports about Williams. The bulls were a little thin before the rain, but antlers seem not to suffer much. The bulls seemed to fatten up fast with rain. Nursing cows are still kinda thin, but looking better. My guess is things oughta be just fine by archery season.
