No, just shot through it lengthwise, with bullet exiting. Not much meat damage whatsoever, the 300 grain Berger holding together very well.

Back from WY with an antelope buck and doe
nw07heavy replied to nw07heavy's topic in Antelope Hunting
wildwoody, I've not seen such a wonderfully 'wild' and managed state for wild game. Everywhere we looked there were turkeys, antelope, deer, elk, etc. in towns, near towns, and in back-woods areas. It was almost like being in a place like 'Africa'. The only shortage I noticed were bison and predators, but that's another story for another time. I've always admired Wyoming for it's 'wild', and somewhat unspoiled state. -

A few photos of Europe and the Alps
nw07heavy replied to nw07heavy's topic in Non-hunting trip reports
Rancilio, We've made 6 or seven trips to Europe recently, summer for the mountain hikes, fall for the cooler forest colors and Oktoberfest, and winter for the Cristkindlmakts. Before that, we spent much of our time in Asia. I'll bet you have some great and interesting photos. When I saw your term 'dungeon' I thought of the dungeon in Chillon Castle, someplace really dreadful. -
As always, great landscapes and compositions!

We just returned from a recent three week trip to Japan to see my son, a US Marine Captain stationed there, as well as his family, including a new grandson. While there we took a few scenic photos, and I thought I'd share just a few of them on CWT.com. Photo 1 is a quiet scene in the hills of Nikko. Photo 2 is the entrance to Enoshima Shrine, one place Lafcadio Hearn writes about in his travels in the 1890's. Photo 3 is a scene approaching the Daibutsu trailhead in Kamakura, not far from where Kublai Kahn sent his armada to attempt a ransom, only to be defeated. Photo 4 is the memorial to Englishman William Adams (landed Japan 1598) and his wife, placed after their deaths. Adams was one of the the most influential foreigners, who became a samurai and hatamoto to the shogun in Japan, and instrumental to Shogun Tokugawa Iyeyasu's bid for power and creating a seagoing fleet. Williams once sailed with Sir Francis Drake, who landed on the California coast in 1579. This site is just above Yokosuka US Naval Base, near where Commodore Perry anchored in 1853. Photo 5 is a trail scene through bamboo behind Kenchoji Shrine in Kamakura. Photo 6 is a colombine wildflower shot in Nikko. Photo 7 is the famous Shinkyo Bridge in Nikko. Photo 8 is one of Toshogu Shrine, dedicated to Tokugawa Iyeyasu, in Nikko. Photo 9 is also taken at Toshogu Shrine. Photo 10 is also of Toshogu Shrine. Photo 11 is also of Toshogu Shrine. Photo 12 is the tomb of Tokugawa Iyeyasu, the greatest shogun in Japanese history. Photo 13 is of Kenchoji Temple in Kamakura, another place written about by Hearn.

Anyone have experience in fresh or saltwater fishing in Japan recently?
nw07heavy replied to nw07heavy's topic in Fishing
The tradition of bamboo poles looks as if it will always be a favorite there. I suspect I may have to stick with river dace fishing or go salt water for whatever I can find. Thanks. -

Hi, Just wondering if anyone has any recent fresh or saltwater fishing in Japan. I'm heading over there and was hoping to get a chance to fish for either Eastern Dace, trout, or any saltwater species. Any insight you could provide would be greatly appreciated, especially permits , licenses, or species specific information. -
Tell us about your elk rifle, and cartridge?
nw07heavy replied to Stray Horse's topic in Elk Hunting
Two of us drew elk tags for October this year. I'm using a TRG-42 in .338 LM loaded with a Berger 300 gr .419 G7 BC VLD, and a buddy is using his new Savage 111 XP TH in .270 Win in which we are working up some long range loads with CEB MTH 130 gr .540 G1 BC VLDs. Good luck to all of you who drew elk tags for this year. -

Women's Javelina Hunting Camp 2015 - An Amazing Experience!

Correct, the 'culls' were just outside BANWR boundaries. The cats come free with BANWR adventures, and are really enjoyable to see and hear. -
Women's Javelina Hunting Camp 2015 - An Amazing Experience!
nw07heavy replied to CouesWhitetail's topic in Javelina
Interesting comment on the mountain lion. A buddy and I hunted the hills east of BANWR one afternoon and had a close encounter with mountain lions. We had split, with my friend going up onto a hill just north of my designated hunt station, when just after reaching my firing point, I heard four snarls on the trail below, followed by a response by another assumed mountain lion on the north hill. I spotted a full sized mountain lion about 100 yards behind my buddy who was now heading northbound. I was finally able to get my friend off the hill he was on and we left the area when nearly dark. I understand that some mountain lions were 'culled' already and that hunters were in the process of 'removing' a couple more in that area. For those hunting that area it would be wise to exercise caution in some of those canyons. The BANWR office mentioned that a staff member had seen an adult mountain lion drinking from one of the headquarter's tanks. -
We had no luck on the handgun hunt this year, but our rifle hunt ended with success. We hunted 36B for both hunts, but found the very dense and tall grass and brush a real hindrance and did not see any animals. On the rifle hunt we experienced groups of guys firing their weapons apparently out of boredom at just about anything, including ricochets off of rocks. This occurred in several different places and interestingly we never experienced this idiotic behavior during any HAM hunt. On the day of our success the bored shooters had gone elsewhere, leaving a good hunting environment. Here is a photo of my kill. I had just arrived at the javelina and was in the process of tagging the leg when my buddy had me drop the knife and tag out of my hand so he could shoot the photo. It was tagged immediately.

I was wondering if any here on CouesWhitetail have had experience with Wyoming antelope hunt guides, positive or negative. I hope to soon book a 2015 for an antelope buck and doe in Wyoming. So far I have come up with two outfitters, Bear Track (Buffalo, WY), and Thunder Ridge Outfitters (Casper, WY). Has anyone here had experience with either of these outfitters, or recommend any others? Not being familiar with Wyoming, except for a few drives through the state I thought I would need a guide, and access to more available antelope buck and doe tags. Any information, and insight into Wyoming antelope hunting would be more than greatly appreciated. Almost forgot to mention, the hunt will be rifle, not bow, using a TRG42 .338 Lapua. Thanks

Any advice with Wyoming antelope hunt guides?
nw07heavy replied to nw07heavy's topic in Antelope Hunting
Hi yotebuster, Oooh, ouch, you got me. Thanks, I'll take your advice on this, not wanting to end up like Elmer Fudd under the hooves of a cape buffalo, or was that some goofy rabbit. I've taken the antelope threat to heart, and will have use of one discounted Abrams M1A1 tank with the 120mm XM256 smooth bore cannon, using M829A1 depleted uranium rounds. Should get the antelopes attention, don't you think? If this doesn't work, I'll need to see if I can find any of my ex-military days specialty hardware, Amazon supplied surplus Nike Hercules missiles. Thanks very much to those of you providing information on the gps cards, especially expressing the critical nuances of BLM land, private ownership issues, habitat stamp, etc. I really appreciate it. -

If you're interested in a good objective (not subjective) comparison test of some common muzzle brakes you may want to check out this link from DF Maisey: ... there are several good objective brake tests by DF Maisey on U-tube.Dean Maisey is very responsive to any inquiries and the objective comparisons are very revealing in brake performance. Of course you will need a trusted gunsmith for the installation. I have had great results with the Norwegian Vektor brakes, which closely resemble the Allen Precision Pain Killer (slab) brakes. I am considering a Maisey brake for my .416 Rem. Good luck in your choice.
