How to finish/slaughter a lamb?
SilentButDeadly replied to SilentButDeadly's topic in Other Big Game
Thanks so much guys! I'll let you know in a few weeks how everything goes! Tyson -
I figure somebody out there is an authority on this, A friend has offered my family a couple of 'pet' lambs that they can't bear to kill themselves and have asked us to take them off their hands... Needless to say, I'm not going to turn down a couple free of juicy lambs. My questions: Is there anything we can have them feed them in the next 1-2 weeks to 'finish' the them off so the meat might improve? I'm willing to buy corn, oats, etc to help the flavor. Knife or gun? I was thinking of holding them down and cutting their throats to let them bleed out, but maybe there is a better way? .38 to the head? PM me if you think details might be too juicy for our forum Tyson

Not to be cynical but, What makes that a $500.00 dollar tripod? American made? Special materials? smoothness of head movement? I know it cost alot new, but what is the quality of it over a Manfrotto/Bogen setup? Why spend on that when I could get a carbon fiber setup that is lighter for less?

Bighorn Sheep information?
SilentButDeadly replied to anthonyrmatthews's topic in Bighorn Sheep Hunting
From someone who is infinitely jealous: My advice: GET A GUIDE!!!! If only to tell you where they are or might be, you can leave him in camp once the hunt starts if you want to feel like you did it alone. Remember, this is a ONCE IN A LIFETIME TAG!!!! My father-in-law killed a desert bighorn, alone, with a bow over 15 years ago. It was the ONLY sheep, ram or ewe, he saw in 14 days of continuous hunting. The next year he got a phone call from a guy who had drawn that year's tag. When my father-in-law asked him what kind of binoculars he had, the guy said 'I think they're Tascos'. When he asked him how many days he planned on hunting, the guy said 'Every Friday I can get off and the weekends," At that point my father-in-law told him good luck, and hung up on the guy. You can guess what happened after that. My advice: get the best binoculars and tripod money can buy, and if you don't know how to use them pay a guy to teach you. Get all your friends who have binoculars and tripods and know how to use them to come along. Buy as many trail cameras as you can afford and put them on any waterholes that the guide you've hired has told you to look for sheep on. Take an extended leave from work, plan on hunting all month if you have to. Scout every weekend from now until December. If you're thinking of all the money you'll save in taxidermy fees by not hiring help, not getting better equipment, or doing an insane scouting season you won't have to worry -- there won't be a sheep to mount!!! -
Not Drawn for me, Pappy got a 33 tag. T

I also think you win for being first to say 'they are up!' Not Drawn for me!

How, where to go when G&F err on your applications?
SilentButDeadly posted a topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
So I got rejected for both my Elk and Antelope applications this year (my fault for waiting until after the correction period) -- however I'm almost 100% positive I did everything right. The cause cited on the G&F website is 'invalid licence number' -- now unless I forgot to put my number down at all, I'm sure I sat with my hunting license in front of me and filled out both applications and reviewed them before putting them in envelopes. My question is: Can I go into any G&F office, and will they be able to pull up my applications on a screen and show me the error? I've read on the by-laws that if there is an error on their part I can at least get my bonus points (and maybe even a tag - if my random ##s were low enough). Any experiences out there? T -

I called G&F, their answer: You filled out the first two letters, but failed to enter any of the numbers... My sinking feeling just burst out my bellybutton, I remember that I didn't input the full license number originally because I didn't have my 09' license at my desk with me; later I forgot to finish filling out the numbers before putting the stamps on the envelopes... No bonus points, lost loyalty points as well. Ugh, Thanks for all the advise though, hopefully someone out there will call in on their applications and get the mythical G&F error reimbursement tag. I'm not totally sure (if I used the wrong ID or totally forgot to fill it out), part of the sick feeling I've had for the last couple months, this is just a way to get some closure... -

Interesting Conclusion
SilentButDeadly replied to Browning'sCustomMeat's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
That number is wrong; there are alot of other blogs on this same topic, the DC murder rate is by year not month... However, if you look at Detroit, the worst American city, the annual homicide rate was 421 in 2006! -

I agree with everyone on the gun laws, especially the ones they found unconstitutional in DC. -

Reread the first statement, 2,112 in 22 months out of 160,000... that is 60 A MONTH, not a year. Thats 9x DC's average. Also, it is a wishful, if not completely invalid, statistic to compare the worst city in America, 68 square miles, to a country the size of California. I find the entire concept disgusting, that a sectarian war can be compared to urban shootings (over half of which are typically suicides). Its even more disturbing that so many people here jump to the defense of this ugly statement, rather than making an attempt to discredit it T -
