Fire Burning in unit #32 ???
SilentButDeadly replied to BACKCOUNTRY's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
I heard on the radio this morning that it is 300 acres with 55 folks working on it. I wouldn't worry about that fire too much. This is the website I use to get all of my fire information, and weather: http://gacc.nifc.gov/swcc/ -

I saw their jerseys for the first time this weekend. Who thought it would look good having diamond plate on them? Probably the worst I've ever seen, ps, the Sun Devils look pretty hideous as well

Nice! Also, good to see that Walmart camo in the field - at least I'll know what I look like now...

I've got a 50lb @28in longbow, and it just seems like the kinetic energy is too low with the arrows I'm shooting right now I've got 200 and 300 carbon x-weaves with 125 grain field points, but they barely get 2-4 inches of penetration into my foam and 3-d targets at 10-25 yards. Everyone i talk to says 'I get pass throughs on all my animals', but most of them are shooting 60lb bows. Any pointers?

They are totally true, I made like 100k off of a deal with this African prince that contacted me via email, it was awesome. -
By the way.... nice sheds. I wish I had the chance to find the sets off of a buck from different years. Are you still seeing him around? I know Don Swan pretty well, he's a great guy, we worked together a bit while I was on the fire crew out at Saguaro. I saw the buck in August, still with alot of growing left to do, I'm worried though that he is going down hill, if this shed is from last year he's beginning to lose his mass and length. Maybe last year was just a hard year for him and he'll bounce back. T

Forget scrapes, I found a fresh rub this morning! The boys are polishing up those antlers for game time! Okay, don't forget scrapes - I find Coue's scrapes in the bottom of drainages, in the flats between hills, on saddles, and out on flat ridges - basically any place that deer travel through and hang out...
-
If I could show you the sheds you'd see that he's a Coue's, also I've watched him running around and he's definitely got a nice white flag, he likes to show it to me as he runs away over the next set of ridges... There are no muleys that I've seen in this area, however I've heard that they used to live there. Something interesting I heard the other day - over in Saguaro National Park East they did a census of the deer around the desert loop drive - apparently there used to only be Muley's over there, this summer when they went out there were only Coues. Maybe somebody has heard of this happening before?

California bans lead bullets
SilentButDeadly replied to billrquimby's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
Link to the last discussion: http://forums.coueswhitetail.com/forums/in...?showtopic=7002 I think there were less reactionary posts in that thread because the context of the discussion was still assuming that California and Arizona G&F would be using their published methods (i.e. burying gut piles, allowing copper ammunition that I assume has trace amounts of lead) instead of the Governator's new laws. I'm kind of superstitious about that - in the 'you only find the monsters when you don't have a camera' kind of way - besides you've seen the photos of what I do run into *shudder* out there on the hills when I have my camera. The other reason is that my little sony cybershot died on my elk hunt. I'm going to try and pick up a used compact off of Craigslist or Ebay to throw into my camelback, so I promise I'll get some better photos for you fiends in the future! After looking at all the sheds today I'm not sold that this is the other side from 2 years ago. Do I hope that it is a set, and have no clue where his other set is? Or be happy that I know the two general locations of where to look for the other sides?! Here are more pics of the newbie and from this spring:

I usually spend part of everyday feeling sorry for myself, the other part of the day I am out looking for the other sheds that this buck has dropped!

So here is my problem: I found another antler from the buck this morning 3/4 of a mile from where I found the last one - making this a set. However, I'm not sure if this is an antler from this year (2006) or the other side of 2 years ago (2004) (I'm certain I've got 2005). I found the other side 5 months ago, but both sides look to be similarly aged - this antler however was out in the open getting rain and sun on it all summer and still looks to be in as good of shape as the other one... Here are some photos -

Good stuff! I've seen Devin's work and it is top notch. I wish I'd known about Devin before I killed my muley (or my Coues for that matter - I still haven't gotten him back from my *other* taxidermist ).

Walk to those tanks, look for prints. Go walking in those shaded cuts, you might find a bed, scat, prints, or even a shed. Keep your binos around your neck, and your head up, watch for little white flags 200-700 yards out ahead of you bounding over the next ridge. I 'jump up' probably 90% of the Coues I find just hiking through the hills.
