Isn't it a little late in the year for Desert tortoises to be out? I saw one sitting on a rock (the rock I wanted to sit on to glass) this morning. I sat down next to him and asked him what he thought he was doing outside, but he didn't answer me. Anybody got any ideas? I hope he crawls back into his burrow soon, there is a Winter Storm Watch on for Tucson today....

Best mapping software I have found.
SilentButDeadly replied to DesertBull's topic in Optics and tripods
It takes a little digging, but you can get USGS Quads off these sites for free: New Mexico GIS: http://rgis.unm.edu/intro.cfm http://sar.lanl.gov/maps_by_name.html - my preferred site. Arizona: http://aria.cals.arizona.edu/ - just enter your email when you want to download http://sar.lanl.gov/maps_by_name.html - good for finding out where private/public land is And of course - http://earth.google.com/ -
It doesn't matter how many miles, or days in the feild IF you know where to look! On your best day how many coues sheds have you found? jim 1st thing - Jim, that is an amazing pile of bone. 2nd- There was an error in the post, I think I hit submit while I was editing it, and it didn't take my final statement - I even changed some of the poll answers but I guess they are good enough for now. I guess my best day shed hunting for Coues' I found 3 big sheds, a set to a 110 buck, and a single from a 90. They were the 3rd-5th antlers I'd ever found, and I had no concept of how special big sheds like that are. I've had a couple of 3 shed days since then, but never that size. I absolutely agree with going to where the deer are to look. I hate when I'm out in an area I think holds deer, I move into a new drainage, and after 30 minutes of walking I realize that I haven't seen a single scat pile, rub, bed or other sign that the deer have been in there. I'm attaching a pic of this year's Coues finds.

Let us do some math: how often do you pound the earth looking for sheds? *If you selected more than one of these categories you've got a serious problem.

Small game hunting
SilentButDeadly replied to GameHauler's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
We had the same problem with rats out at Saguaro NP East, we would park our vehicles for 2-3 weeks while we were away on fire assignments during the summer. The rats would move in under the hood and pull all of the insulation in the firewall out and build a nest on top of the engine, and spend their time after chewing the electrical wires. The solution we came up with was to park in a walled yard with a fenced gate - can't kill the buggers on a National Park. However, the packrat in your engine is a 'symptom' of living in a desert area - the cure might be to put up a rat fence around your parking area.... Besides, that rat probably has family who will be coming looking for their missing Bro or Cuz http://www.mrpackrat.net/rats_in_cars.htm Tyson -

I kind of got in over my head suggesting to my 70 year old grandfather-in-law-in-law that I could put him on a monster Coue's buck in unit 33. After the first morning of dragging him across the hills I realized that Coue's country is NOT the kind of place that you take a 250 pound ex-major league baseball player with mild arthritis. Things were pretty rough going the first couple days, only saw (and promptly lost sight of) 2 bucks out of about 20 deer. Day three, with sore legs, butts, backs, and egos we finally turned up a couple of bucks. Everything came together though. I was on a ridge a mile away from my father-in-law, Ernie, and grandfather-in-law-in-law, Ken. I spotted the bucks down the ridge from where they had set up and guided them toward them, Ernie helped Ken close the distance on the bucks. They took off their shoes (bowhunter style!) and closed the last 150 yards to within 50. The bucks dropped down into a canyon, I lost sight of them, and was left watching the guys point out the bucks and begin firing. Ken put two out of three rounds through the buck's heart, off hand at 200 yards with his 7mm mag. I came down off my ridge, and with the help of my Vizsla located the buck 50 yards from where they last saw him (100 yards from where he put the 1st bullet into his heart!) I'm sure alot of hunters will have the same story as we did - lots of other hunters, saw some does but not any bucks. Even though the buck is only 60 inches, it was the hunt and the effort that made it memorable (like any Coue's hunt), and we can say that we went out there and did the best we could and came home successful. The buck had a huge body with a lot of fat on him. Tyson

Click here for study on Turkey Vultures vs Lead BB's: http://www.jwildlifedis.org/cgi/reprint/39/1/96.pdf For those who don't like reading scientific publications - the birds that got fed the most lead died, the ones that got fed moderate amounts of lead got sick and weak, the birds with no lead were fine. The number of birds in the study was small, only 8 animals, but it did show that lead affects these creatures, as it does all animals (you can type in 'lead poisoning' and google it yourself). The science is on the side of the birds - which means lead bullets will ultimately lose in court, that is just how it is. -
to be honest, I'm not sure which teams he played for, I do know that he played in the 1950's for a Cubs developmental squad... His stories mostly revolve around the fact that he made 5k a year, not exactly the big bucks players make today.

Lookin' for a Dec/36B huntin' partner

I wonder if there is anyone with a DECEMBER 36B tag around this site??? Hmmm -
Any computer programmers out there? It seems to me that a simple Boolean expression (True/False, If, Or, And, Not) would correct the problem. Why doesn't the program take the Bonus Point round applicants and 1st choice applicants and execute them simultaneously, if there are left over tags after this point it goes to the 2nd round? I'd wondered about this same issue with my New Mexico Archery elk tag this year, I got my 3rd choice, while the other 2 out-of-state applicants I know put in the same 1st (their only) choice (I put in 2nd same unit, 3rd in different unit) and got drawn.
