Hail, Fire, and Elk antlers

great pictures, those grass fires are pretty cool, as long as you're on a road up wind of them! I'm betting the fire went out that evening, with all the moisture we are having a grass fire would have alot of trouble surviving the relative humidity recovery at night... -

Well, I was back at it this morning... I found a really nice shed off a buck I've been watching for 3 years. He is the buck that I found my first ever Coue's shed off of -- and boy o' boy is he getting to be a bonzer! Not sure if the shed is from this year or not... I'm pretty certain this is the same buck -- but if I'm wrong so what! It means there are 2 beasts roaming my favorite hillsides! Also, unbelievably I found the matching side to one of the smallest sheds I've ever found -- I'm thinking of reposting in the microsheds thread... ANYWAY -- GRONG I felt so bad for not having a camera with me last time I at least took my cell phone, so here are some ATL's for you! Here is a pic of the shed with the same side from 2 years ago. the spike set

Time for a name change!

If SHARD has anything to do with SHARD-ing, as in you SHARD-ed your pants --- you might be moving in on SBD territory -- only so many of us can make fun of ourselves with stink jokes... But I'd welcome you to the crowd. -
Alright, I'm a doubter, That first weirdo could be anything, super cool though. I'm going to call BS on the second one, it has what looks like 12 inch G2 and G3s, a >20 inch main beam which would make it close to a 70 inch shed; 140 without a spread (155 with) putting it 10 inches over the world record... That, and it LOOKS alot like an eastern. But if you really think its a Coues, I suggest you start scouting now, spend the whole season there, and bag a potential new world record.

since I can see this thread hasn't resulted in name calling, @#$t talking, or some other insulting tone (like it would have on some other website), I thought I'd start... Must be a farmed bull! No way! Moo!!! Okay, I have no idea what is going on...

I went out this morning to the spot I found the 'Big Mass' shed in January. I haven't been out there in 3-4 months and I wanted to try and find the other side of the Big Mass sheds. I got out to where I found the big shed and dinked around, after a bit I glassed up a leg bone about 60 yards away, got up to it and noticed that it had LONG dew claws (the kind that only old bucks have!) I got pretty excited and called Briggs over. I let him sniff the leg and said "Where's the Deer!? Where's the Deer!?" he took off sniffing and looking (I trained him to look for deer with a dried Coue's leg, which made this awesome!). We looked for about 20 minutes but couldn't turn up anything. I pushed us up the canyon to the water tank to see what had been going on around there. To my disbelief there was a shed laying not 15 yards from the tank! When I turned around back toward the tank to look for the other side I saw that I had practically walked over it on the way to the first one! The buck is a nice 3x3 that I guess to be in the mid 80's. We headed back to the truck down a different ridge, I called my father-in-law Ernie to tell him how excited I was to have found a set of sheds laying next to one another, and BAM! I see Briggs sniffing something in the drain, when I look closer I see that it is a huge wide antlered skull!! I screamed and ran over to him, I was so excited to tell Ernie I forgot to tell Briggs what a good dog he was! The buck is probably the same deer that I saw the day that I found the Big Mass shed. I'd tried to put a stalk on him, I grunted with a tube and got a smaller buck to come in but I never say the Wide buck again. Anyway, the rack is 16 inches wide on the inside spread, 18 inches on the outside. He has short tines all over so not a big scoring buck. But man is he heavy all the way out. His main beams are 19 and 17 inches. From the looks of his teeth he wasn't all that old. Looks like a lion has moved in on my area hopefully he isn't taking out all the big old boys... Pictures!: ps, all of you ATL folks out there can kiss it! I had to leave my camera to make room in my pack for all the bone

President Bush spent the night at my house or
SilentButDeadly replied to ThomC's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Maybe not last night, but wasn't he in Phoenix recently for a McCain fundraiser? Maybe you're a big money campaign donor... You do hunt (so you're probably a conservative), and you don't mind buying two tags a year -- so that further implicates you as having cash flow, further skewing you toward the conservative party... Of course Ockham's razor clearly demonstrates that results are out (see: the post with over 100 replies). However, this does not clear you from the dubious distinction of having had our esteemed President darken your doorway... -
I'm guessing around 96 gross; he loses alot cuz of his asymmetry, probably nets 91.... His frame is unbelievable though. 17 and 19 inch beams, 16 inch inside spread, 3 1/2 inches of mass all the way out at the 3rd circumference. Its a shame his g2s are only 3 1/2 inches -- same size as his g3s. T ps GRONG, I was thinking of you on the way back to the truck -- besides leaving my camera at home I'd left my work phone which has a camera on it in the truck... Ha!

3 Lions in One Picture
SilentButDeadly replied to jamaro's topic in Photography of Coues Deer and Other Wildlife
maybe they are african lions... I heard one was running around CO Springs.... -
Something called the "Thomas theorem" states: If men define situations as real, they are real in their consequences Basically it means that if you think of something a certain way, and act on it, than you might just make it come true... hence a self-fulfilling prophecy To that end, I here by declare that I have been drawn for Desert Bighorn sheep (with my whopping 2 bonus points), and if for some reason there is an error and I don't get my tag this year, it is only because the AZ state record sheep has not yet reached maturity, or perhaps even been born yet... Positive thoughts people! I suggest you start congratulating me on my successful hunt right now... Photo Credit: Courtesy of Arizona Game and Fish Department via Cronkite news service

I'd guess that bull died and animals chewed the skull and pedicals away... kind of the opposite of this one where only the tips were chewed off... btw, the date was off on that camera, it was more like 7/23/2007....
