It's a day I'll never forget. Was at Luke working a busy day shift, briefing pilots on their flight plans, observing the weather conditions. Our station chief, a Senior Master SGT, lightened the morning up by wheeling a TV into the hall where we and the fighter pilots could watch the Challenger lift off. Luke AFB was one of the emergency landing runways were the orbit to be scrubbed. Didn't bother me a bit to send in additional landing data to NASA on those launches, it was an honor. We all know what happened, seemingly flawless lift off, then disaster. Within seconds, the Chief yanked the TVs cord out of the wall and teared up as he and our unit commander went in to their offices and closed their doors. They rarely ever closed their door's. There wasn't a dry eye in the flight planning room. Everyone was quiet, everyone wanted left alone. But our work went on and there'd be more successful launches and tragedies. But I'll never forget that day. Anyone else remember where they were that day?

I recommend not eating the goat's butt. If I can survive eating raw goat skin in SE Asia (a tale for around campfires), you can eat a New Mex mutton import.

Five year old thread on this sad anniversary. Makes me wonder where some of these members have gone. Hope they are well.

Close encounter with an F-22 fighter jet

Imagine a fighter with electronic warfare capabilities so advanced it can not only jam enemy ground and airborne radar in over a thousand mile radius, but also turn it's enemies own missiles against them. Imagine? -

My nephew is an F-35 crew chief. We've had discussions concerning the F-35s capabilities after a recent NATO war game. Let's just say I am in awe and sleep well at night as they fly sorties over my home. -

They do. The footage is reviewed by squadron commanders much like a football coach would. Easiest way to tell the F-22 from the F-35 is simple, F-22 has 2 engines. -

Just tell me more stories about watching the Wright Flyer as you surf fished off Kitty hawk. -

LoL. Prior to the course being built, Luke AFB had the dubious reputation of being the only CONUS air base with no golf course. It was a big, big deal among the brass and enlisted. As some compensation, those stationed there could play free at any public course. This thread is really making me reminisce on my duties at the bombing range, Gila Bend. I saw and worked with every attack and bomber aircraft in the NATO arsenal. Only aircraft I would never see were the B-52s but their effects were certainly felt. -

F 35 on top is a Luke bird. F 22 below it, Langley. Langley's VA AFB is the nearest F-22 base but they will visit AZ. Nothing like getting buzzed by A-10s in a remote canyon while on a green horse. -
Lol Nearly sold it a few years ago, can't now. So if you need to nut punch someone, punch yourself. Sorry op, just saying these are around. Saw one in a pawnshop downtown but it was a .45

My dad picked this up in the late 60's for $75 at a garage sale I've considered selling a few times but not so much these days.
