I choose to carry a .357 pistol for black bear should i encounter one with a bad attitude. Have a .357 rotary rifle too with an 18" barrel. Some good penetrating 158 gr jacketed rounds leave the barrel at close to 2,000 fps. That's a big, fast slug for a bruin. I'd guess the effective range would be 100-125 yards. Friends of mine were outfitters in central MT. They had regular clientele coming out annually from back east for deer, elk and Antelope. My friends didn't have to travel more than 90 minutes to fill all three tags. Within a few years of reintroducing the wolves, the game is gone. Now it's a minimum 2 day ride with pack animals into the Bob Marshall before seeing deer and elk again.
