Heat, sorry I missed this thread somehow, you're one of the good guys on this board. I'll send prayers right away. Can totally relate to your situation. Went to the doc for some respiratory issues recently and all I heard was cancer. It's like getting hit by a hammer. Stay positive, friend and keep the faith.

Grandpa's Springfield 1917 rifle rebuild, maybe 6.5-06?
Edge replied to Zeke-BE's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
OP, here's one old guys mindset; dad will turn 90 in a few months. He gave me this early .06 Gamemaster about 20 years ago and still asks about it. Some 15 years ago and despite my efforts with neatsfoot oil, the sling was finally worn out and had to be replaced. The news upset him even though I kept the original sling... A couple years later, got a 10 round mag for it. This perplexed him. But when I mentioned taking off that antique 4X Weaver tube and replacing it with a better scope, I about gave him a stroke. Told him the old 'post and wire hair made it tough to acquire the target beyond 150 yards. His reply, "150 yards, get your butt closer, thought I taught you to hunt better than that." When I left, he refused to make eye contact and was still muttering his distain for shots past 150 yards with that setup. Point is, there may come a day when you may want to take a deer with that old rifle just exactly like grandpa did. -

Leave it alone or you'll look back someday someday and regret it. Give the barrel a good lapping and see how she shoots. I sold a 1917 improved to .300HH, what a beast. -
I've got room for individuals and some livestock north of Surprise.

About 20 years ago I was living in the Philippines. On my birthday, the ol lady summons me outside where the family is waiting and a goat is tied to a railing. I'm presented a ball peen hammer with a bow tied around it. Little did I realize I was being given the hammer in order to slay the goat and get the festivities started, a big honor there. Didn't taste bad, not great. The skin was cut in chunks and put in a jar with pepper and vinegar to be eaten raw. Yum.

I'm hunting in remote enough areas no one will come across the remains. Which is good, I don't want to touch the Fleabags. Summer is worst for the skin parasites; ticks, mites, lice, fleas capable of carrying everything from plague to tapeworms. Did you know a flea can leap over a foot? They're the kangaroos of the parasite world.

Haha, glad I don't have pics but in WA one year chose the 2dr Tercel over the truck to save gas. Got a nice Columbia blacktail near Mt Rainier, put him in the trunk and couldn't get the lid down. Surely pissed some libs off driving back to Seattle like that. Last year took the gf's Sonic shed hunting and got into some narly country in gmu 9. Guys in their lifted 4x4's couldn't help but stare...and laugh. Left 9 and headed to meet Mulepackhunter in 5a. He warned me the forest road in was muddy and chewed up and to call from the Hiway, he'd come get me. BS, I had to go for it. Man was he surprised to see me drive in. That 40mpg is hard to ignore. But surely the gf would disown me if she knew where I took her car. It's one reason I don't keep photographic evidence.

I hate stupid headlines like; Is Richard Simmons Transitioning? or Is Hillary Dishonest?

It's a long rifle Edge. I think it is in very good shape but what do I know. TJ it's a beauty. Let us know what you find out on value?
-
Is it short or long rifle? I'm afraid the tapping will hurt the value. Looks like it was tapped for a side mounted scope, I had a Winchester 1917 done the same. Ultra cool rifle, TJ, hope you're getting an appraisal for insurance only.
