In the far nw valley we got around 3" from Rosa. Now we're getting a good rain from a Pacific cold front and next week looks like Sergio heading this way... Already one of the wettest October's on record and only 1/4 of the way through.

Some days I call in more fox than coyotes. But have no interest in killing them. Once had one follow me at my side from a stand to my vehicle a mile and a half away.

I'm heading up to Lee's Ferry for next week for a 6 day fishing extravaganza. Have never fished there. Taking spinner and fly rods, heard 1/4oz gold castmasters, midges, rooster tails... Taking inflatable kayak also so any tips, mucho gracias.

Hope it's fixed soon, heading that way next week. That's quite the detour, will eat into my fishing time. 😱

When I lived off the grid, the wood stove went 24/7. I'd wake up in the middle of the night freezing, needing to put another log on (7,000' in UT). When I hauled in Eucalyptus to burn, I was finally able to get 6 hours between logs and some much needed sleep. Some friends had automatic pellet stoves with blowers but those weren't much use without power.

I was born in Phoenix, AZ in 1897 and graduated from Phoenix Union High School. A few years later I would die from a single bullet wound fired from an unseen gun and buried alone in a field where I died, age 21, 100 years ago today. Who am I and what is my claim to fame?

Don't limit yourself to seashell hunting if you're interested in fossils. Seashells do not go through a mineralization metamorphosis like celled organisms do, they remain calcium carbonate and therefore not so rare. Petrified wood is highly collectable, especially if opalized. Keep an eye out for shark teeth Be careful where you step..geods or Dino-dung? Who can name the next specimen?

The paper threw me at first, but definitely Guatemalan. Bust it up...look for seeds. Crushed red pepper, leaning towards Honduran.

There won't always be a knife sharpening expert or power outlet in the field with you when you discover your blade needs edged. Buy a whetstone or water stone. They are often 400-600 grit (rough) on one side and 1000 opposite.. Draw it with the edge at a 22.5` to the stone and pull at a 45` towards you I wear a leather belt that doubles as a good strop and have an unglazed porcelen coffee cup in my camp box for finishing edges. If your blade sharpens but won't hold an edge it's likely not high enough in carbon content and therefore not hard enough to retain an edge. Common in file made and Damascus composite blades.
