Catch and Release hunting
az4life replied to Manamal's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
Personally, I do not think that sort of hunt would be for me, however I do have to wonder if that may be the wave of the future. Heck a hunt like that is probably for the big $pender anyway. They have no idea of the real reward in putting food on the table. Only interested in the Kill and the Show and tell trophy. We have to Face it, Hunting is changing with all of the Anti's and the Lawyers getting into our sport. Putting people on the state board who have never experienced the sport in supervisory positions is another example. Seems to me like putting a fat person in charge of designing weight loss diets for Ethiopins. It does not add up! We sportsmen also have the threat and fear of Chronic Wasting disease. In Elk and Deer the meat may be a problem, and no one can say for sure what is and is not safe, but most experts agree, The antlers are not affected by CWD. Taking only the antlers, a hunter can still take a trophy and have the visual reward and reminder. If I was a PETA person (and I am Not) I might rationalize that stressing the animals is better than killing them. TGhat will be the argument for now, then... This is just the way those jerks get their feet in the door and start the changes. Next thing we know, they will be outlawing any photos of animals in the wild. Yes sir, I tell you the times are a changing, 50 years from now, I would not be surprised if the only way you can hunt is in a virtual reality "game". As for me, I wil follow the "waste nothing" hunting rules so we eat what we harvest. That is my nickel's worth on the topic. -
Hey everyone! I was out and about today and heard about the new Sportsman's Warehouse Grand opening on the west side of town. This one is at Litchfield Rd and I-10 I think. Anyway, it is not Cabelas, but it is pretty impressive, and will save you a long trip to one of the cabelas stores. Pretty good selection and seemed to be knowledgeable sales people and reasonable prices when I went to the one that opened last year (or was it 2 years ago?) along the 101 and I-17. Raining this weekend, so you might as well shop. Later

Congratulations and I understand the excitement causing you to post in the forum. Looks like Bryce is happy too! Thanks for the story

Got a new jeep
az4life replied to CouesWhitetail's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
I think the jump start packs are all about the same. I have seen several brands in the past few years and some of them even look the same with different labels on them. They are sort of bulky for me to carry around so I just take my chances. Since I am not offroad as much as you, my situation is different I am sure. I just try to Make sure the cell phone has good coverage! -
Got a new jeep

It used to be when I worked behind the counter that anyone with cooling problem came to me cause I had so many I learned the tricks. If it overheats at slow speeds, it usually Airflow problems. these could include the fan clutch, missing fan shroud, clogged radiator fins, or faulty electric fan switch. It could be a Tstat if the heating is a problem at any speed.. High speed overheating is not generally airflow, if your radiator grill is pretty clear. High speed means water flow problems (radiator, collapsed hose, thermostat stuck, bad water pump etc) because at 40mph, you are ramming enough air into the radiator to cool it. With newer vehicles, so much is dependent on getting the motor up to operating temp, you need to be careful about swapping the 195 for a 160. Some guys took out the t-stat altogether and the vehicle ran hotter! That is since the t-stat provides a restriction to keep the water IN the radiator long enough to allow it to cool. The t-stat will open and close as the water temp changes. Works liek and air conditioner expansion valve. Hijacking the thread again... I gotta quit that. It is good info anyway. Amanda, did I tell you I like your new Jeep. Good luck on the decision to sell your old one. Thread is back on track. -

Amanda On the A/T or Stick, with your swap to A/T, be sure in the offroad situations, you take it out of overdrive! That low speed driving will wear out your trans pretty quick if you do not take it out of Overdrive. I would also say to change the fluid every 15K not the 30K most dealers recommend. Those 2 things will keep your tranny in good shape for a long time. I switched to A/T about 5 years ago and never looked back. I went to the Richard Petty Driving Experience At PIR last week and the guy asked if I knew how to drive a Stick. I said well I used to... He said it is like hitting your head with a rock, you never forget. I cannot say I ever hit my head with a rock, but he was right, I got along just fine! 114MPH 2 car lengths behind the instructor! WHEEEE.... Anyway save the memories and keep the smile on your face with the power goodies and the A/T. By the way, Wetmule, If you want them, Come on over and take them away.... -
I have to say personally, I think the typical racks are nicer to look at. And for this buck, "freakish", really describes it.

My Brother-in-law just tipped me off to this site DREAM BUCK. Before you Open the pictures tab or the video link, make sure you have some duct tape handy to keep your jaw from hitting the floor. Pretty amazing, and the main reason for the site is to sell the "stud service" (artificially) of this Buck. How'd you like to see this one in your sights?

Good Luck to all you late tag holders! AZONECAM: Your first post looks like that of a true sportsman. Take the whole experience in, and enjoy what you do find, even if it is not a filled tag. I am sort of in withdrawal right now since this is the time I usually go hunting. Did not get a tag so whoever got (my) tag, good Luck!

Got a new jeep
az4life replied to CouesWhitetail's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
Niced looking rig Amanda. I see it did not take too long to get the website on the rear window. Does it have leather or fabric interior, what about a few more inside pictures... show it off! It is hard to argue with a jeep cherokee for versatility and comfort and most of all, reliability in off road situations. No I do not have one, but did consider one. I have had that personal attachment thing with vehicles too. It takes a while to wean myself off the old vehicle before selling it looks like the best idea so I know what you mean. I bought one once from a fellow after he refused to sell it to another guy that he did not care for. He said he just could not stand to see it go to the other guy so he told him he would not selll it to him. I came along as the deal was falling apart and he told me the story as the other guy left. Funny story recently, when we got a new vehicle for my wife. We had the old one (ford exploder in great shape) for sale for about a month with no offers. Then one day a neighbor came over and was very interested. I gave him a bit lower price, and told him to take it for the day long work & Home round trip test drive the next day. Well the same night, another neighbor called and offered me a better price with a sad story to go with the offer. She said she just got disqualified from her new vehicle cause she did not make enough money. Seh said she could afford mine because of all the money she makes is in TIPS. (neighbor#2 is an exotic dancer who tosses late night parties across the street form us.. among other things) We decided to sell to neighbor 1 since he liked it and we just could not stand to see our former vehicle parked in her Neighbor#2's) driveway. It looks fine in his driveway though! Sorry, I didn't mean to Hijack your thread, but it is sort of related and demonstrates the point... enjoy your new Jeep! -
I read the article about cross breeting mulies and coues, but what about Texas whitetail and coues? Amanda, do you have any insight to share as a game biologist?

Lark's visual rangefinder is a tried and ture method. With quick reactions, it actually is possible to use that. Just be sure you have a lot of ammo and a good backstop when that hot lead starts flyin! I practice ranging things as I walk or kike. Estimate the distance then verify it with a rangefinder. Do this while you are scouting, and with a little practice, you will get pretty good, and be able to leave the rangefinder in your pocket.

I am upset but not surprised at the direction the commissin is going. The commission is just representative of the "perceived" population in terms of more liberal tree huggers PETA card carrying nutjobs. Political correctness is a tacticl ploy used by liberals to devalue anything they do not agree with. They know how and when to play that card to fool the public into thinking PC is a good thing. Appointing another liberal anti-hunter who is masquerading as a duly qualified custodian of the sport is just par for the course. Janet NapoloReno is a pure liberal and to expect anything else from her is unrealistic. She was elected in part because so many libs are moving here from CA. Our beloved state is changing and as we found in the commissions recent example of "no guts" during the USO lawsuit, this runaway train is going to be very hard to stop. The best chanse we have to save a little of what we once had is to band together as groups of concerned citizens and make our combined voice loud and clear.

Sportsman's Warehouse
az4life replied to az4life's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
I catually think it is Litchfield and I-10, but in either case it is only a mile difference, one from the other. -
I got these pics and the email text below from my hunting partner. The email source trail suggests it actually did originate from the person who sent it to him. I don't know for sure if it is real, but maybe someone that is a photoshop wizard could prove, or disprove it. Pretty cool if it is real. --------------------------------------- "These pics came from a coworkers dad in AZ. Yes the Mule, killed the mountain lion. The lion had been stalking them for the better part of the morning, on the way out to a hunt. They were pretty sure it was after a dog. The cat apparently ambushed them, and the mule pictured tossed its rider and went into attack(defense) mode, the horses scattered and shots were fired but no one was sure if they hit the cat or not. Unfortunately, the battle was decently long, and it wasn't until it was almost over that one of the guys started snapping pics."

Unit 35A and My first Coues...
az4life replied to HillBilly_Al's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Well done Hillbilly_al ! A super story chock full of numerous events showing every time that you have outstanding hunter Ethics! Proud to have you as a fellow forum member! -
Well, it shows the apathy of most sportsmen. Generally we are all trying to follow the rules, and whatever the AZGFD changes them to, we will comply. Grumble a bit and we get told to be involved more so you don't miss input on the things that affect you. I think the AZGFD is like any other company or agency and has their own agenda being driven from the top. People in the Drivers seat push the Fee increases paying for new verbage and requirements on Crawdad nets and additional funding of studies with questionable value. these are all on the "accessory list" and the people in the driver's seat want them, so we have to pay for them. Not enough oversight and we all pay for it in more than just the tag fee. It seriously looks like the commission is trying to cater to non residents more, maybe to keep out of court. Anyway, I said months ago, this could be the beginning of the end. A traditional way of life for sportsmen is definitely changing in AZ. Sad part is, where else is there to go?

Very sad story that will affect many people in many ways I am sure. I must say, the Tribe did act quickly to prevent similar Accidents from occuring. I gather from this, the tribe has autonomy and and did not have to wait for the politics to come into play. Everyone, Be Safe!

Brian I have been there, and done that! Both of the follow-up posts are dead on. I would add that Before you condemn the data and results you have from your apparent misses, you might want to go back to the 250 range and test the shot again. It is possible the scope, rifle or even less likely the loads were faulty. I had a scope that could not handle the magnum recoil and was moving every shot. It weas a new Scope, and I went 3 years without bagging a deer after I put it on my gun. When I found out the scope was the problem, I was really ticked . The others have mentioned the variances in barrels, and most MFRs guarantee they are accurate at 100 yds. ButIf proven inaccuarate, send them the barrel and they likely will replace it. I know of 2 people who have had barrels relace free of charge. Apparently bad publicity, and maybe liability is very important. Go back to the range and fire a few more rounds to make sure you are sure of what happened.

Okay, I have considered using a hiking stick, but never considerd a yucca since most of them I see are too far gone to support their own weight, let alone helo me. P have thought that the extra thing to carry would be more trouble but I am open to the idea. Could someone with experience in making these pass on the knowledge? How to select one, proper diameter, and length, and what lenght is best? How to prepare and maintain it, and is there a better time of year to find good solid ones etc... (rubber or rabbit tips, cloth tape) from the above posts, but detalis will help more. Thanks

I know what you mean about talking to yourself. Truth is for the computer generation, we "chat" with ourselves. This is Really sick, but tonight, My wife is using the Desktop PC, I am 5 feet from her using a laptop, and my daughter is about 6 feet from me using another laptop, and we are all on the internet. My wife and Daughter are msn Chatting and laughing about it "through me" . Heck they hardly use the telephone becuase they like to "chat" better. 20 years ago people would have never believed that would happen. Times are a changin! -
Find the Deer game
az4life replied to CouesWhitetail's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
Amanda Fine job. I could see how a lower quality monitor could make it tough to spot the deer in a few of the pictures. I am getting used to my new laptop and I turned up the wide screen monitor settings to high power and it made it easier. Thanks for the "enhancement". -
Definitely a nice deer. The hunting was hard and had its reward.

Coues Like everyone else has said, your post tribute was eloquent and obviously heartfelt. I would guess in your case, with the passion you showed in the written feelings that there are several others ready to step in and become your new friends. While never forgotten, Remember, there is a bigger plan and your friends have guided you along the way. Obviously they made a mark on you and thanks for sharing.

I am pretty sure everyone has heard about the story, and it has been the topic of several discussions around the water cooler at work. Now the site is back up here goes... I find it hard to justify the position of the accused hunter for killing 6 and wounding 2 others over his own trespassing and use of a treestand he did not own. Some folks I work with were actually defending the lunatic who now admits to the killing. The info I have read, says the accused was on private land in a treestand belonging to the property owners. When he was discovered, some verbal exchanges went on which we will probably never know, and he ended up shooting at least 8 other people and there was only 1 gun among the 8 people he shot. I find hunting to be a sport and it is unbelievable that a hunter would consider shooting human beings for any reason other than self defense and especially over something as small as a hunting site. I suppose many of us have been greeted by another hunter in one of our favorites spots, but on private land that you own, it seems beyond belief. Comments, experiences to relate with this sad story.
