Paying the indians
az4life replied to bullwidgeon's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
I do merchandising for a local Auto Parts retailer. Weekdays 7-5. I agree that there never seems to be enough time to hit the hills like there used to be. My weekends are usually left for the family and honey do list! -
Lark Is that Ray at Bighorn taxidermy? I think they are just north fo the 51 and he had a huge collection when I was there for pictures a few years back. Don't recall the owner's name though.

Thanks for the confirmation of what my post stated. While we are puttingout that wish list of people to get more money, let's add firefighters and Hot shot crews on forest fires. -
Oh no. Is sounds like she talked to a lawyer.... See how her story changed from her primary protest of her son "the child molestors" case not being handled fairly, to She is being a good steward, taking care of the land Read through the story, and she still used the child molestor complaint but not as her primary reason. She needs to just let it go. Her position is not helping anyone including her son or herself. nuf said

Lark From the sounds of it, are you sure you were not in a big Cabelas store? Sounds impressive for sure. Did he shoot them all himself or maybe he buys the ones he likes from other hunters?

As bad as the fire season is going to be, maybe we hsould think about fireproofing the game cameras when we put them out. Keith I did not hear anything about the fire until late last night. Sure is smoking up the sky. Keep us in the loop with your vantage point.

I will chime in with a comment about pay is only "relative" to the comparative. Soapbox brought out! Yes, The GFD ofFicers and DPS, and Teachers might make less than Lawyers, or Dr.s or engineers, but for someone who does not want to (or have credentials) to be a Lawyah, or Dr., 32k - 56k could seem pretty good. I have a sister who is pursuing her degree to get a teaching certificateob. Mid 30's and she decided to go for it. She never held a really good paying position, mostly retail, Childrens daycare, Airline call center, etc... She wanted to teach for a long time but heard everyone complain about the low pay for teachers. well she did some research and found they started over 30k. She said they did not know what low pay was! She said that the teachers complaining about the low pay were full of crap. All the free or VERY LOW cost benefits, for State employees, on top of the salary make it easliy another 1.5k per month and that doesn't even include the pension retirement benefits. Add that to the reward she will FEEL for educating the next generation, she said it was a easy choice. She has spent the last 4 years or so getting her degree and is finishing it now. I give her credit and respect for pulling it off and calling the "low pay" crybabies" nuts. As for the AZGFD, and Police officers, I agree it would be nice to have them better paid. Lets hold up the crooked trial Lawyahs and give it to the PD BP and GFD officers. I did say CROOKED... Seriously, they deserve more! For that matter I could use more money too! Better Pay so I can have a 200k house and 3 cars with a boat and RV for weekends. Thansk for indulging. My Soapbox has been put away. -
Welcome to the site, Blue Elk. I agree, that the deer probably think we are blind and have no sense of smell. Some days they can sit so tight you have to step on them to get um up and moving.

Oh that's a good one. A flightless, wingless bird goes extinct and man is blamed. I agree it was going to happen with or without man.

Mnt. Lion in Scottsdale!
az4life replied to Tucson John's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
Wow. Maybe there are some deer in that area too! Seriously I hope GFD does investigate. Sure would seem prudent. One would have to believe that in that area, a Mtn Lion would not have much in the way of normal foold so humans hiking would be a substitute sooner or later. -
You say how you have seen the panic in thier eyes. I agree with you 100% I can recall the image of a buck on one of my first coues hunts. The buck jumped up from along side a boulder within 10 feet of me and bolted downhill past me within 4-5 feet or so. I still remember that look I got at him as he flew past. I have seen it a few times since in other bucks too!

2 PETA Employees Arrested for Animal Cruelty
az4life posted a topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
Just saw this online story. Animals leave a shelter alive with PETA staffers, and end up dead. Next time PETA protests your hunting, remind them of this... PETA Staff Arrested for Animal Cruelty -
Very nice indeed! Very strong looking and good tine lengths. The taxidermy looks sharp too! If you ever need a place to display it, let me know, I think I have just the place!

Who takes video of animals?
az4life replied to BASS's topic in Photography of Coues Deer and Other Wildlife
nice job from that distance! The cam must have been tripod mounted as steady as it was. Thanks for posting the link. -
PLENTY! is my guess. Lots of times in hiking to my spots, I have jumped deer out just as I was about to step on them! They know how to sit tight! I think they invented it!

Who takes video of animals?
az4life replied to BASS's topic in Photography of Coues Deer and Other Wildlife
I think it would be neat to do a video sometime when I don't get drawn. Never had the small camera or time when I am not hunting and never seem to have the desire to do anything except glass and find my buck when I am hunting. another item for my "some day..." list. I saw a couple clips from Josh's site, and those are about the only "amateur" clips I have seen of Coues. If anyone else has some, I think lots of us would love to see some clips. Maybe I can provide some web server space if that is an issue?. -
Nice find and great photo composition with the black backdrop the antler features really pop. Keep lookin for the other side! thanks

After listening to the AZGFD guys tonight, talk about not letting the deer on Kaibab reach their own natural population high point, to prevent them from "harming themselves", I think there must be something strange in the water. Or maybe this is the twilight zone?
-
Absolutely right. Let your Eyes do the work and then tell your feet where to take you!
-
I guess 2-3 miles with a max of 4 miles. I feel that when the "hiking" outweighs the "hunting" the chance of a benefit shrinks considerably. I prefer to Hike up slower in te AM as it is not uncommon to spook deer as you make your way in the dark to your stand. Then I stay put or move just a few times in the day just a short distance to change the view when things get slow or the wind changes direction. Pack a lunch and plan to stay all day and you will have the best chances, unlike the guys who go back to camp for lunch and then go back out for the last couple hours.

#3 right here! I am hoping this year w/o the credit card applcation fees, the overall # of apps will be lower. Especially from out of staters....
