Wacko Alert! Wacko Alert! Wacko Alert! She certainly is using the gate for leverage but I applaud the Klondyke people who are using the legal system to "lite a fire under her" so to speak. Say.... Just wonder what Tapia would do if there was a wildfire threatening her property. Bet she would open that gate in a heartbeat! Cannot believe how long this is taking to find a legal way to bypass her.
  4. Thins that make you say HMMMMM.... They have already increased limits on lions to hopefully ensure a better chance of survival for the soon to be transplanted bighorn sheep in 6a. That said, It Seems like AGFD does have a good understanding predator control when it suits their needs, but they give little credance when it does not suit their plans.
  5. Thought I would pass on something I heard about last week and is now up on the AGFD website. Many of us who frequent coueswhitetail.com often compliment Amanda, for building and maintaining this site which is truly the best site anywhere for Coues Deer information. All the members share valuable information but Amanda is the key in facilitating the one site for everything. Now is our chance to let the AGFD know what a quality resource Amanda has built for all to use. The Arizona Game and Fish Commission is soliciting nominations for their annual Commission Awards. There are a number of categories open for nominations. (The categories are listed on the PDF form link below.) Some categories apply more than others. Nominations may include individuals, organizations, clubs, foundations or government agencies in any of the defined categories. Pick your favorite category and send in your nominations! The PDF Nomination form link is at the bottom of the post. SUBMISSION DEADLINE IS 5:00 PM, August 15, 2005 AGFD Excellence Awards Nomination Form
  6. I agree with you that AGFD does not want pie on the face? They do move quicker than other burro-cratic agencies but they do seem to have their roots in slow decisions being better than quick ones. By nature, Burro-crats don't want to upset the balance of anything without figuring all the angles. Most importantly how it makes them look to others. Backing away from a long established game mangement plan has lots of implications . You can bet Shroufe is going to be VERY careful about saying ( an dhow to say it) the department was wrong.

    Earth First!

At least they did not do damage to the quad. We have heard some extreme examples of the lengths these wackos will go to. I would have been mad if that happened to me. but After a while I would have reflected how it could be worse. All these posts emphasize the point we all need to take care! Trust that which you know... and be on guard against that which you don't.
  8. Well at least they did nto leave the animals inside the enclosure to see what effect the fire had on them. Sometimes the obvious answer is overlooked until it can be proven. Thanks for the update

    arizona draw

Mine were cashed 6-29 so I am "IN" . Hope to get 1st or 2nd for Coues and Elk. Maybe with all the internet apps being done away with this year, the overall draw odds will go up too? Sure is Quiet on the board the last couple days. Must be everyone out of town for the weekend. I think I'll just sit by the pool and play a few rounds of golf before it gets too hot. Just too many people in the high country to consider making the "cooler run" this weekend.

    Fire looks bad

hope it stays out of the superstition wilderness east of there. Golfields should have it corralled in a pretty secure area. Salt river and rt 88 & bush hwy is pretty large but compared to the complex, it is not that big at all. Seems like It has been a while since any of that burned so it could be bad if it heads up the mountain Lets get some rain!.
  11. Sharp looking pup! For calling the dog, Kaanan is better, but let me toss out another idea. how about something like "Arrow"! seems appropriate for a sharp straight dog like that! Great for a pointer too. Another .02 you probably did not need for a name.

    Fire looks bad

Keith No problem. I have the server space and it only takes a couple minutes to resize the bunch of pics. Those choppers are neat. Gotta love the Mantis look of the sikorsky. here is another satellite map link showing the fire.June 28 Fire image one more another look
  13. Lots going on right now with everyone out scouting and preparing for hunting season. That said, Hosting pictures "off site" on another server is a good way to keep the bandwidth down on the site. Just email me and I can host them for a couple months, until the thread is ancient history. I can help with photoshop re-sizing and minor edits if needed. What's in it for me? I get to see the pics first! Just PM me and I will send my direct email address.

    Great bull

Nice Bull indeed. Back to a previous topic, what would it take for you to shoot a bull or buck on opening day. This one would do nicely.

    Earth First!

Wow! I just googled Rodney Coronado. Major player in the Extremist Terrorist brigades. First link I found is excerpted below. Rodney Coronado Biography Rodney Adam Coronado is a long-time ringleader of the Animal Liberation Front, a criminal enterprise that the FBI classifies as America?s most dangerous domestic terrorism threat. (Obvioulsy he is just misunderstood) He was sentenced in 1995 to 57 months in federal prison, for the 1992 arson of a Michigan State University research laboratory. In a November 30, 2002 speech, Coronado openly confessed to at least six other arsons, all of them part of a crime spree known as ?Operation Bite Back.? While the FBI was most intensely investigating Coronado, PETA gave him over $70,000 in ?grants? from its tax-exempt coffers. Coronado has been associated with criminal animal-rights organizations since at least 1984, when he joined the Sea Shepard Conservation Society. In November 1986, Coronado and David Hewitt sabotaged a whaling station and sunk two whaling ships in Reykjavik, Iceland. Since that time, Coronado has shown a tendency to flee jurisdictions where warrants were issued for his arrest. He fled Vancouver in 1987, later jumped bail following another arrest in Canada, and went on the run in 1993, hiding on an Indian reservation while the FBI searched for him for nearly two years. Despite his self-description as a ?former? Animal Liberation Front activist, Coronado remains active in the animal rights criminal culture, currently fronting for a special-interest ALF subset known as ?SHAC.? In a classroom on the campus of DC?s American University in January 2003, Coronado demonstrated for a crowd of college radicals the ?correct? way to build a firebomb out of household materials. Lots More out there but this is the short and sweet version.

These are some real nuts. How dare they threaten to ruin someones hunt! I dare say that some otherwise cool headed hunter might just blow his top if they show up to ruin his Bighorn Sheep or Trophy Bull Elk hunt. A disembowled prairie dog could be the least of the worries if that happens. Comparing prairie dogs to the Bison is like comparing horseflies to bald eagles. We all know, Most folks do not deal well with threats, and Incindiary articles and comments such as this do not help causes or bring anyone closer to understanding the other point of view. Sounds like no one threatened them but they turn around and threaten others as retaliation? Have an open mind and work through the system. I have noticed that Extremists are rarely considered the voice of reason, representing a majority in an argument.. IMHO Going out and SERIOUSLY advocating sabotage is more than extreme, it is plain Wrong!

Been there done that too! man it sucks... Do a favor and it seems it is common courtesy to find your own honey hole, (maybe in the general area) and not adopt te shared one as your won!

    Hunting Partners?

Kevin Maybe I have the heater terminology wrong, but the heater is a "dish reflector type" coleman, attached to a 20LB propane tank. Maybe it should be called a propane heater? We find that the lantern helps throw a lot of heat too, so between the 2, sources it can get very toasty. I wouldn't advise leaving your mashmallows close to the heat if you know what I mean. We always leave a couple flaps part way unzipped for cross ventilation and I leave one partly open near my head. The heater is on very low during the night which just keeps the chill out of the tent. I too was rather leary of an all nite heater to begin with but seems to work. We have done t for about 8-10 years. I guess there is potential safety problems with an heat source inside a tent. I would not suggest anyone do something they are not personally comfortable with. Thanks for the info and concern. always looking to keep learning and living.

    Hunting Partners?

RR I have had several hunting partners but my current primary is the one I have been with for about 10 years now. I helped him take his 1st deer and he was hooked! Others move on, out of state or out of the hunting Phase of their lives and just lose interest. Come to think of it, I recall helping at least 7 people take their first coues. 4 of those, it was their first deer ! 1 father son combo one year was a real challenge. IMHO Sharing the hunting experience is part of the best experiences afield one can have. Generally we camp together with 2-4 people and hunt the same areas but often not "with" each other. Maybe 1/2 hour - 1 hour hike apart. many times in visual line of sight for help and safety. occasionally we will sit and glass a spot together but only if we have a good prospect for a stalk or one of us is under the weather. General chat at camp is good but I hope every year that he kicks the nicotine habit before we go. I Don't know how he can be so lucky getting anywhere near deer with that smoke smell all over him. Our Camp is pretty rough . We trade off on using our tents year to year. Both are 12x14 or so. Cots, inside with a good catalytic heater on all night long in the tent. Gas stove used for dinner, and afterwards, we usually kick back, and pop a good DVD in the laptop and have a laugh at the professionals on a good comedy show. Always open to others in camp if they can rough it the way we do. I have thought it would be fun to have a meeting with other hunters from the board in the same unit one night after hunting. I have hunted in unit 24 and often met other hunters in town after we decided to drive the 30-40 minutes instead of cooking. Seems most everyone has a sad story and are eagler to learn what the successful few are doing to get that way. Anyway, have a great hunt

    best coues hunt

Brian That is a great story. Stories like yours just go to prove that "The family who hunts together, stays together". I would venture a guess that you never will have a bad coues hunt with that special experience to build on. Even though you are seperated now, That experience will always help keep you young, and always looking forward to the next hunt... with your stepson. I for one hope you get drawn every year. Thanks for Sharing your story. God Bless

Okay, I don't want to monopolize the trhead, but I want to remind everyone that there are some good stories on the Hunt Stories page. Here is another one from one of my first times hunting these deer. First Timers Tale - Amazing Coues

    best coues hunt

2 years ago, my hunting partner and I were able to take 2 bucks at the same time. We were next to each other, shooting across the canyon and dropped 2 bucks within seconds of each other. Another year, about 12 years ago, I was hunting on the last day of the year. I was sick but could not pass up the last day hunt. Alone, I hiked for about 3 miles over very rugged terrain, planted myself and waited. Fog rolled in and it was nearly 11:00 before it cleared. As that happened I spotted a deer across the canyon, 250 yds. It was a nice 3x3 buck. I moved closer and took a shot, dropping him. He rolled down the canyon. I had to hike pull him out from 100 ft almost straight downhill, field dress him and get back to the truck. I was so sick, and he was too big for me to pack with my gear. I hung him in a small tree. I halved him and began the hike out. Left part of my gear including my gun. (STOOPID) I Ran out of water but made it over the mountain, back to the truck at 3pm. Tried a short cut over the mountain, but that was very wrong. Took way too long and was way too hard. 2.5 hours later I made it out. Felt like I would die on that hill for a while! Not enough time to go back and no water! so I headed home. I called GF hotline and asked about going back to get the other part and my gun the next day. they flipped out when I said I left my gun, but said they would note my story and to have any officer call in if I was stopped. I told them I was so far off the trails that I had never seen anyone in that canyon during scouting or hunting. It was a Long way back over rugged country! I drugged up on cold meds and coffee. Hoofed it in another way and my fast pace made it in to the spot in 45 minutes. I was moving! Loaded up and made it back to the truck in 1hr 15 mins. I was stupid and Lucky! Leaving my gun and part of my deer in a tree, left me open to lion attack or who knows what. Turned out it was the best deer in our group that year. Helped 3 others get thiers before I got mine an no one was around to help me when I needed it. Learned a lot that year, and I am more cogniscent of my limits now. Hope you all get a good laugh on me.
