Holy Cows! That is a beauty of a buck! I just wonder what makes them so big down there! Congrats and good luck on topping that one!
-
Well houw do you like that. Schedule that meeting when a lot of Late season deer hunters CANNOT attend.
-
Brian I was in superior Friday Night and heard about that 105" buck too. Rumors of another Monster in that area recently, but no proof yet.
-
Great gads... That is a monster of a coues. Congrats! Cannot wait to hear the rest of the story.

Scott Good luck on that biggun. He's a beauty! Looks a lot like some of the rugged STEEP country we found the bucks hanging out in too! any rut signs in 27?

Any reports from the late tag holders?
az4life replied to catclaw's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Just got back and saw more bucks than any year I can recal. LOTS of forkies but I am holding out for a bigger one. My partner took a large forkie today. Spotted him from 1000+ yards, then again when we moved about 3 hours later. 700 yards and across a canyon. He decided to stalk on the buck and then hiked down about 600 feet elevation and back up to about the same on the other side. Took about an hour, I guided him to where the buck had moved and helped him top out on the ridge in a good spot, which left him with 150 yards to a bedded buck out in the open for a shot. Then watched in the scope as he got in position and made the shot. Pictures later but I am tired and have too much to do before hitting the hay. -
Very nice buck. I agree about the " What If " category. Sure is big nonetheless! Congrats

Finally some good news. Hope we have as good of luck with the AGFD on the new hunt structures. I got the typical brush off when calling the setate offices but at least is was a call opposed to add to the pile. -
Count your blessings! And Do not forget the 150,000 plus in Iraq. Thanks to all the military!

Nicely done Amanda! I don't know when you have the time! -
Great bull for sure! !Looks like you got him near the end of that day. Use every minute of daylight for hunting! It pays off.

Okay, some of us have just a few days until our late hunts open. I recall the thread on the dinner "meeting" some members had down south in 36? a month or so ago and would like to try coordinating a similar one for Unit 24A and 24B December hunters. Amanda and I have emailed about this idea, and we are both going to try to meet at Guayo's El Rey "on the trail" in Globe on Saturday the 17th around 7:00pm. This place has Great mexican food I am told! I will be there if at all possible. Amanda is also planning to be there if possible. Now we know this won't work for everyone but I always eat out at least one night when hunting and this seemed to be a great opportunity to put faces to names and discuss what we have seen.. Post your tentative RSVPs or just show up for some good food and hunting chat. Marlon, (AZ4life) Hope to see you there! Guayo's El Rey "on the trail" I believe it is north on 88 from the juction of 60 in Globe.

Interesting info on the ranking. I would guess we have a lot of folks out in the field scouting and hunting on the weekends so that can't help the weekend hits either. I am going to have to find a hotspot in Globe so I can log on in the evening while getting dinner during my hunt. -
Neat finds while roaming the hills
az4life replied to GRONG's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
Very cool find Josh. That bayonett is really neat! I think I would soak it in PB Blaster or some other rust breaking product. If it is rusted, the rust will eventually eat it up so getting it apart would be the best thing to preserve it. I have found canteens, belts, A car Jack, gloves, old mule shoes, a beat up pocket knife, Several unused rounds of ammo for various calibers, a couple old cork type whiskey bottles other assorted odds and ends. It is pretty cool to find stuff like that. You get to a spot where you think no one could ever have been and then you find evidence contrary. I try to pick up trash (cans, papers bottles) and carry it out whenever possible too, but that's nothing to write home about. -

Yup, Guilty as Charged! Maybe not day 1, but pretty close to it as I recall. If I am in reach of a PC, CW is one of my first stops. Thanks for all the great people on the best hunting site around! -
I am sort of thinking of a CWT member "Eat and Greet" on saturday 12-17 after hunting at a restaurant in Globe. It Would probably be a reasonable distance if you are hunting in 24a or 24b. Who would be interested?

I don't know what it is but deer seem to get bigger in and around swamps! Awesome buck. -
After seeing this, I am sure the AZGFD is looking for the shooter. Obviously taken past regular shooting hours and within 1/4 mile of a structure. Maybe it was their new Decoy?
-
I agree with Kevin. Recoil is a major consideration. Everyone can handle one or a few shots, but as Kevin points out, time on the range while shooting many rounds will lead to accuracy. Have a sledgehammer hit your shoulder 20+ times in a couple hours and you will feel it and likely adjust your shooting style for it. adjustments lead to inconsistencies and inaccuracy. I would probably say a 7mm mag for flat shooting and good energy retention. (I shoot a 300 win mag) One more thing to consider is variety of Off the shelf ammo available. 7mm seems to be everywhere with some fair variety of options. just my .02 worth..

Drats... No dish network! Anyone up to recording it digitally and posting it for me to download? Okay... I could not even do that but maybe you have a teenager in the house who is really techno savvy?
-
Hey Muley, Did you forget to attach the pictures?

Here is my rig. Will also have an older GMC Jimmy . Lifted, White w/big tires, but no decal! Maybe we will run into each other. I think I will head into Superior or Globe Saturday night to eat and hopefully celebrate a nice first day buck!.

2 scouting trips in 24b and spotted deer and good areas on both. Read on another thread that there are signs of an early start of the rut farther down south, so all I have to do is show up. RIGHT... I am not sure if I will have much time after opening weekend due to family issues so I am hoping to score on Friday -Tuesday of the first week.I would like the hunt to go according to plan. (Like Mace's) Maybe a day trip or 2 if I don't succeed opening weekend but those are iffy at best. Family issues have been many and challenging this year for me and now with the AGFD proposals I wonder if I will ever be drawn for this hunt again. Therfore, I am treating this hunt like it could be my last late coues hunt so the experience will be more important than the "score". Even so, I hope to take a nice buck with a quick shot. Taking a digi cam along for memories too! Counting the days, (Next week at this time I should be packing) and work really has been tough as it is a Busy time of year and everything seems to be blowing up so I am wearing the fire hat (putting out fires) a lot. It just makes the last few days before leaving very Long and difficult. Hope you other late taggers do as well, take some good bucks and save some great memories. Dreamin of a 130" buck G'night

Public Lands Sell-off
az4life replied to CouesWhitetail's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
I read about this over the weekend and thought it had some good points but like a lot of thing in government, They Screwed it up in comittee and in this case they turned it to a free for all for developers. As I understand, The original intent was to allow mining companies to more easily improve claims and access to them, then leave in place all of the improvements and infrastructure, (roads, Power, Water) after they finish their work on their claim. That way it would encourage development since there is a head start. The legislators totally blew it with so many loopholes that now anyone cn say "I want to stake a mining claim for research" and never mine a pound of ore. then build another Anthem like development for 1K per acre land costs. The lobbyists won on this one and I read our Illus-turd-us senator McCain supports the bill. I can't say I am Surprised, That sorry sellout is too full of delusioned presidential aspirations and is just a pompous power hungry media darling windbag who has never seen a camera he did not want trained on him. Politics aside This one's pretty easy, that's why he got it wrong. I will email him but he will not care. He don't listen to constituants as they voted him "in" and he says it is up to him to make the tough calls. This needs to be written up by people who care, not those who are sellouts..
