Well looks like I drew my first out of state tag for NM. Drew the first archery bull hunt in 17. Now the prep work and research begins on the unit. Only have driven through NM, so should be a learning experience. Should be able to get over there at least 3 times for 4 day scouting trips. Sounds like the unit holds some big bulls but the elk move around a bunch. Never expected to draw the tag.
-
Red, thank you for the reply. Sounds good, Im pretty used to the 8-9k feet of elevation part so that shouldnt be a problem. Waiting on a map of the unit to arrive, to start searching where I want to scout at. Hopefully I can figure something out and get into some elk.

It should be soon, I havent got my return for my other tags I didnt draw yet either. Probably this coming week I am figuring.

AZelkhunter69, yeah I hear you there! I was getting real used to see the red boxs on my app's in NM last handful of years. I truly didnt expect any different this year. Was in conplete shock when it showed green! I struck out in AZ as well, though planned on that as I drew my tag here last year. So now the 5-12 year wait for me in AZ again. AZTB5, Congrats on your tag man! That was one of my choices as well. Love to hear back from you on how you hunt goes. Hopefully you can knock a bull down!

Well looks like I drew the unit 27 early archery bull tag. Havent hunted that unit before, though have a buddy who has. Looking forward to this hunt, should be a good time. Curious on the rifle hunt prior to archery will affect the bulls. I have several spots picked out via google earth and such. Looking to head up and hike around to learn some of the land, between now and July. Should be able to make at least 6 trips up. Then going to scout hard in Aug. Hopefully find some water holes their using. I plan on being up on Sept 9th so a week before opener, to scout more for bulls from the 9th-15th. Then hunt starts on the 16th. Any suggestions from anyone who has hunted this unit before? I plan on buring some boot leather myself, and hitting maps hard now.

Thanks for the comments guys! GJMauro12, maybe I will run into you up there! Good luck man. If you need anything while out hunting let me know.

Alpine, thanks again for the post. Good to hear majority of people head home, though I do agree will be intresting how the rut activety is this year. That makes perfect sense on how you go about, and very nice to live right there. Thanks again for your info, maybe we will bump into one another this year.
-
Alpine, thanks! I be heading up you way soon, Im jealous of where you live haha. Yes as of now, my plan is to hold out for a decent bull. Though right now just trying to get my ducks in a row before anything else. How is the hunting during the week, is it still made armies roving the roads? Looking on the map I located 8 locations I want to go check out and see what they look like in person. Some are deep back in there away from roads. Others not so much, with easier access. Sounds similar to how you have "easy" and "harder" spots to go. I plan on being able to hunt all 14 days, so also going to base where and how I hunt off the pressure of other people.

Oldboar, thanks for the post! Ill take your advise and focus on finding cows. Then the week in advance that I am up there I will focus both on cows and bulls. I know the unit is rough country and that is what I like about it. Too me it looked like a lot of areas where a guy could hike or horseback in and be away from majority of people with ease. Does that mean its easy to do that, not a chance. Though I think worth it. Again awesome post, thanks!

Greyghost, thanks for the info! I heard its rough country and have been workig out. Plus I work in the mountains here at work. So prety used to hiking them. Though working on cardio more to help. Glad to hear you dont think rifle will have too much impact on it. I thought the same thing with the later dates should have good rut activity. Ill take any advise you can give me! Im still debating on where I want to focus on. I have several areas picked out though there all in seperate areas. Dbl Lunger, Congrats!!! Id love to hear how your hunt goes. I will be up there by the 9th to set camp up and scout prior to the 16th. If you need anything. Help packing out etc let me know.

Well yesterday was the day I have been after for several years. Ive made countless failed stalkes on Coues deer. Got close numerous times, though never sealed the deal until yesterday. I couldnt be happier. Yesterday morning at first light, I glassed up a buck with a doe from 1163 yards away. Me and my buddy watched this buck for 4 hours. We both guessed him to be that 95-100" class deer. The buck looked mature, and had good head gear. I finally made the choice to attempt a stalk. I had to loop around to the next canyon over and make a huge "L" shape approach due to terrian and some private land. I was able to finally crest over the peak, and re located the buck. He was pushing his doe my way. It appeared as he was going to come below me. I moved postion, but ran into a big rock wall drop off. End of the road for me. I ended up losing visual of the buck for what felt like a week. I picked up visual of his doe skirting the bottom of the rock wall. I ranged a bush (very few of them, mainly wide open) that I believed the buck would end up near. The stars, sun, and moon alined. He pushed that doe back, when he was a few yards out from the bush I stood up and went to full draw. I had a decoy mounted on my bow from ultimate predator gear. I mouth grunted at the buck, he slammed on the brakes. He looked right up at me, and saw the decoy. He got pissed another buck may be trying to steal his does. He looked back down at his doe, with his back hair standing up trying to look as big and mean as possible. I truely believe he thought he was king of that mountain. I settled in took a depth breath, with "buck fever" at a all time high. I didnt even realize, (since I was focusing on my pin and his vitals) though my body went into shoot mode and sent a arrow down range. The buck was facing with his head to my right and slightly quarted uphill towards me. My arrow struck, just in front of the shoulder 3/4 of the way up. As I heard the clear sound of "whack". Knowing my rage just hit bone. I could see my fletchings sticking out of the buck. He whirled around and took off, after 60 ish yards he stopped and stood there. I could see the blood running down his brisket and legs. He would walk 50 yards and stop and repeat. Every time he stopped I could watch a pool of blood form under him. Even at 200 yards out free hand'n my binos I could see the bright red blood trail. Then the blood started coming out his nose. As I sat there watching all this unfold in front me, I was in debeilf. Wishing he would tip over, and give up the battle. The buck tried to run up hill, and made it appx 15 yards till he lost his footing and tumbled backwards snapping off my arrow. He somehow got back to his feet and headed down slope to a flatter portion. I watched him stand there, swaying side to side, praying he would tip over. He fell over and basically bedded. His entire chest, legs, and mouth were soaked in bright red blood. After appx 10 mins to my shock he stood up and stumbled behind a tree, and I lost visual. Replaying the events in my head, I couldnt see a way this buck wasnt dead to rights. I kept looking at the blood trail in my binos, and replaying all the blood he was soaked in. Wanting to play it safe, and not lose this monarch I waited 2 hours from my shot. I hadnt seen him move or come out from behind the tree. I walked down and got on the blood triail, that looked like someone poured out a 5 gallon jug of blood along the trail. I approached the tree, arrow nocked incase. I was about 80 yards from it still on all the blood. Then in a whirl there he goes. Doing what he can to run, and my heart sank. Knowing it was either lose him or (he was headed for private land and houses blood trailing would of been near impossible in the houses) finish it. I went into full hunt/kill mode. I was able to re locate the buck about 80 yards from where he jumped from. I snuck into 20 yards, he stood up facing me. Not the shot I wanted, though knowing I needed to do him justice and end it. I sent a arrow straight through his throat patch and down into him. Again the buck took off, I found him hanging on by a thread shortly there after now two arrows into him. I walked up and gave this buck the respected he had earned. I helped him along faster, and harvested a true trophy for my first archery coues. The will to live in this buck was truly insane. During gutting and cleaning, trying to see what happened. So next time it would be better. The first arrow hit one lung, bounced of his off shoulder and slit the liver (somehow). The second arrow, slit his windpipe along with the neck artery. Then proceeded into his one good lung and into the guts. Yet he manged to still go let alone no lungs, bleeding out every where, and no windpipe and a failing liver. He was a brusier and died like one. Was it picture perfect, not a chance. Though I went toe to toe with a monarch of the mountain. He was a fighter, and I will never forget how hard he tried with nothing left in him. The buck had no upper front teeth, and was a HUGE body coues deer. We rough scored him at 106 7/8". Though subject to change with +\- 2" or so. This buck is being processed by me, and I will enjoy the meat he provided me. He will also be mounted, so I can admire him and the memories he has given me. In honor of the buck who wouldnt die, thank you. You earned my respect in more ways then one.

Sorry guys, wont say where or what unit. I hunt several units to which several members here can confirm. I have family and buddies with tags as well. Though what I will say is that no matter what unit I have been too, I have always found mature big bucks. Just a matter of hiking in and glassing. With all due respect.

So I have realized I will probably never be able to hit max points for sheep here in Arizona. Looking at the regs and doing some research, to try to make the best guess to "win the lottery" and draw a sheep tag. Does anyone know how the draw odds are for codes 6016, 6041, 6042, 6043, and 6044. I know its still a long shot to draw a tag, just trying to sort through pages upon pages of data to make my choices. I would assume (at least if it was me) I wouldnt put in for those units if I had or was close to max bp's. I know the sheep densities are low in those units, and its a brutal hunt. Good news is I am younger and can hunt the whole season if I was lucky enough to pull a tag. I understand these hunts are back pack hunts and in extreme country. What are your guys thoughts on these hunts? Or can someone point me in the direction where I can do more research on these units? Thanks and good luck to all in the draw. Bitter
