Good Rifle For My Girlfriend
muley224 replied to couesbowhunter1's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
I agree with the 7mm 08. Great caliber. I would consider also a 257 roberts. Both my daughters have loved theirs, remmingtons. -
Not Az Strip, East side Kaibab. 224 net, 203 main frame. Over 6" bases, lots of mass. Thanks on the congrats.

As of 5pm today, no hit on cc. 19 pts for pronghorn. Gonna give up on checking. Waiting till the results are out. Feel like I'm in the twilight zone.

3 friends of mine drew unit 10, early rifle bull tags. They had max points. Back to the Big Bo !, I had it last year. I have 19 pts for Pronghorn, not even gonna check till next week.

Was just wondering on members thoughts on glassing etiquette. Hunting the Kaibab for so many years, I have had several instances of getting out early to my glassing spot only to have hunters come by me after sun-up and park right next to me and set up their optics. I personally would never infringe on someone elses space. Right or wrong ?

Thanks for all the different feedback. Guess it boils down to courtesy. I always say Please and Thank-you and hold doors open, but not everyone does.

Glassing from vantage points on roads is very common on Elk and Deer hunts in Az, especially in the Kaibab and other units with long visabilities. Glassing at long distances can give you an opportunity to set up a stalk without just hiking in and boogering game along the way. Alot of trophy hunts are in areas where roads are everywhere. It mostly upsets me when youre glassing and someone stops and gets out with their optics and slams doors, has stereos blasting, and generally makes alot of racket. We all know how sound travels in the field.

Have a friend of mine with a unit 21 Javalina tag. I havnt hunted Javalina there for many many years. I used to hunt between seven springs and Bloody basin. Used to see a good number around Humbolt radar tower. Is there still some good spots in that area? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Think that there is no real schedule to go by. Have seen Mulies in nortern Az. drop in Feb and other years in late March. A friend of mine in Payson says you can bet that the Elk drop around Valentines day. Whenever I go north of the Colorado river for Mulies I go in early April.

Finally after many years, many dollars spending on bags, decided to pay up and bought a Butler Bag. Best investment ever. Have had it 10+ years. Dont think I will ever need another as long as I live. Best in the business by far.

In the future, whenever you are having a mount done that is a horned animal, always keep the horns yourself. They do not need them until the cape is on the form and ready for completion. In case of the shop closing, you at least will have the important part of your trophy. Capes can be replaced. I have used Frank Jiminez, A-Z Seivers Mountain Valley taxidermy for years. He is honest, reliable and fast. His work is outstanding. Good luck getting your trophy back, I am sure it will turn out well.

Eastmans Journal has several books out on hunting Mule Deer.

The 88" goat was taken in 98. I have been up there recently and have seen several Bucks in the low to mid 80" class, mostly on private land. Photographed a 90"+ around the Horse track 2 years ago. Perkins ranch and Granite Dells if you can aquire access.
-
I also have 19pts and couldnt say if its enough. I believe the max is 23 or 24 right now. Depends on where you put in and what you want to harvest. I like 19a if you can hunt one of the ranches. Have seen some Dandys through the years there. Have some pics of a few over 90". My fiend took an 88" net there. We hunted him for 3 days. Heres a pic. Good luck in the draw. Last year I drew a unit 10 Early Rifle Bull tag in unit 10 with 4 pts. You never know.

Book Cliffs Buck

Hey DesertBull. I drew the Bookcliffs in 09. It is a migration hunt for sure. you can just about set your watch to the movement. It is always in Oct during the hunt. Most of the deer move to the north. You will see more deer than you can count. Lots of 130-160 class. There will be tons of locals hunting the roads. Whole families. I have some pics of the road traffic, unreal. 1 quad had 5 people on it, from the grandmother to an infant! lots of blaze orange. If you wait till after the first weekend they are usually all gone. The main road that runs from the top to bottom is like a highway. Hunt low on the north end. Great glassing and tons of deer everywhere. Once the deer start moving they are there fast! I am in the Kaibab every year on winter range and you will see as many if not more deer. Lots of big 3 points, and crabbed 4 points. I passed on a few 170 class and took this one. He was with a toad and when they busted out I took the wrong one. Oh well, shoot happens. Good luck on the draw. San Juan Elk ridge is also a good hunt. I drew that in 96 and took a 30" 4x5.
